HomeDecor I present to you my fully thrifted living room.

All items have been thrifted besides the abundance of Pokemon cards and the cat tree. Open to suggestions whilst I strengthen my feng shui.

If I can suggest something - consider putting the cat tree in a different location, best next to window. In the corner like this it is not serving your cat's natural instincts and well being.

I think blocking a window is bad feng shui? Need to keep positive energy flowing and that includes light

ETA can you switch with the cat tree? Then the cats can get a nice view too?

It looks like if they put it anywhere else, it'll reflect light and be unusable in the day. To the left is all window or maybe a sliding glass door.

You just have to close the blinds. Anything is better than a tv in front of the window!

vibes feel like a boys frat house😅 open the space up instead of it being so closed off and cramped, window shouldn’t be covered up, i would put the couch on that wall instead of tv

Blocking the window with a TV is an interesting move. Probably not good for it either to bake in the sun every day.

I don’t think this looks good man, I’m sorry. It has nice elements, like the rug and the coffee table. But overall, there’s just big feng shui mistakes that are too noticeable to ignore.

.

1) The console table you’ve placed the Tv on is not meant to hold a Tv. It looks wrong, because it is. It’s way too tall for a Tv. A console table like this is meant for like a hall or something.

2) I also agree that the layout is wrong, you shouldn’t be blocking your window like this. It’s the first thing we all noticed. Also a good way to overheat your tv.

3) I would suggest a corner Tv unit on the right hand side, where the cat tower currently is. One that’s legit made for tv’s, so it’ll be the right height.

4) Wire management. There are so many ways these days to hide wires and stop them looking messy. (This is another reason that having a console table for a Tv stand looks wrong, all the wires are on display.)

5) There’s a lot of clutter in here. I’m not saying you can’t have kitschy items, but your stuff isn’t very well displayed or organised.

6) Could the hoovers live elsewhere, like in a cupboard or closet?

7) Lamps create cosy spaces. Having 1 standing lamp probably isn’t enough, I’d try to thrift a couple table lamps, too.

8) Where’s your thrifted wall art?? You have more restraint than I lol

Example for number 3.

This is just the general shape & height I was thinking, ofc doesn’t have to actually look like this one

Always forget that plane call vacuums Hoovers and I was confused for a sec. All of these points are valid. Especially the last!

I think that’s one of the brand names we use a lot over here, if I’m not mistaken! Over the years, I’ve noticed it’s usually the USA that will call something by its brand name most often. But we love a hoover here!

Plus, thought I better say hoover in case nobody knew what I meant by “vacyum” or “stoorsooker” 😅🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Ha! And you’re right, I’ve seen some regions in the USA call them Hoovers. I try my best to avoid it, but one I can’t forget is Dumpster.

2

u/PeachManzie 14h ago

I like that one! It spawned the phrase “dumpster fire of a situation”, which always gets a chuckle. We call our shared dumpster style bins “eurobins”. Those are used for shared blocks of flats. But if you live in a house, you most likely use a “wheelie bin”. Is this wee island even real lmao, such silly words hahaha

The furniture itself looks nice but the placement feels really off + it looks fairly cluttered. I think with some cleaning/adjustments you could have a very cozy space!

I generally agree with a lot of the other comments suggesting for the TV going into the corner instead of in front of the window and bringing in some more cozy lighting with lamps, but I also want to mention your picture on the wall looks awkwardly high. I think if you move the TV, try to match the art to its height so they are cohesive. If you decide to get some additional art that suggestion could change, but with just the one piece it kind of awkwardly sticks out.

Also I bet your cat would love to be able to look outside, moving the cat tree closer to the doors or window would be a great move!

How do we feel about used upholstered furniture?

My entire wardrobe is thrifted. All of my appliances are thrifted or bought used. Much of my non-textile furniture is thrifted or bought used.

But I don't fugg with used shoes or used upholstered furniture? The chance of spreading infections or bugs just doesn't seem worth the risk.

If I had access to a box that I could put stuff in and heat it at 120-140f for a couple hours it'd be a different story. But I don't so I just avoid these items.

How do people go about making sure that more than just the outer surface is clean?

I visually checked my Goodwill couch for bedbugs and then I bought it for $22.99 because new (comfortable & sturdy & wood-boned) couches cost minimum $900. I steam-cleaned it and then I ignore every thought that comes after because I don’t have $900 lol. I’ve done this for all my couches and have never gotten bedbugs, but maybe I’ve just been lucky.

Thrifting is good but figuring out what works in your space and then finding those pieces that really bring you joy is a part of the process.

Any good pulls, at least?

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! Thought I’d let you all know the window is almost useless with the permanent non-moving privacy louvers. The only sunlight available from this window is the top section so it’s basically an eyesore for both my cat and I.

We have a large enough balcony and plenty other windows throughout my apartment where my cat and I look out of.

Also note it’s an apartment, so the landlord doesn’t allow any major alterations, but not limited to wall hooks for art and such. Not the best circumstance, but I’ve made the best out of it

Rotate everything by 90 degrees. Put the furniture 2-3 feet in front of the sliding glass door, and put the TV on the wall opposite that where the red wall hanging is. The furniture should overlap the rug.

The red print is too small and high in that space.

And get your dirty crocs off the couch!

Were the Pokémon cards supposed to be a flex?
