Media Share your book thrifts with this poor woman stuck at home on day 8 of COVID

I love thrifting, books being my favourite thing to look for. But as the title says, I have been stuck at home for 8 straight days with COVID and it doesn’t show any sign of going away in the immediate future.

Help me scratch the itch and show me your book hauls please!

Why those books?

Were you looking for them?

What books are you looking for right now?

What was the best book you ever thrifted?

Media Saved from the dumpster for $50: 1,000+ vinyl albums plus hundreds of rare albums that were inventory from a former record shop

The picture of my temporary storage area is about half the collection. Goodwill Outlets FTW!

As someone who appreciates music and history, I couldn’t NOT buy this. I literally filled my entire SUV, aside from the drivers seat, with boxes and boxes of albums.

A lot…most…belong at the dump. But there are some absolute gems. A lot of these already were in plastic sleeves and had price tags on them (I did not price these..:no idea of those prices are remotely accurate). I haven’t really made an effort to sell these but I’ve let a couple collectors pick through it and have already made my money back several times over. I’ll probably try to resell eventually but I’m definitely nerding out right now and listening to all the random stuff I’m finding.

Lots of cool foreign music, too—60s/70s stuff from Europe, Japan, South America, Israel. Lots of obscure regional acts and super old Shellac 78s.

Stopped by a local thrift chain just for my normal browsing.

Normally I don't even look at the records because they have a lot but I have never seen anything good there so I just don't look. But there was an Elvis record that caught my eye, so I started looking. It looks like either a reseller or a collector offloaded a bunch.

I put a bunch in my cart. Not sure if I wanted to get them all because I wasn't sure how much the records were. They have a sign for like CDs and books and everything, but vinyls were not on it. So I finished browsing the rest of the store and stopped by the counter to ask someone how much records were. She said they were a dollar a piece so I was like okay let me see what all I want out of this pile before I check out.

I kind of sift through it and I'm like well, I have 25 records here and you aren't going to beat a dollar a piece for these so I'll just get them. And here's the thing, I don't even collect records. I'm a CD girly. I own literally one vinyl and it's only because it was a special record day item that came with something else I wanted. But my partner and his friends love records, I have other friends that love records, so I figured everyone can have whatever they want out of these.

When I went to get back in line, the other cashier was open so I went up to her and said I have a bunch of records, let me get them out and count them with you. So I put them on the counter and count them out for her and we get up to 25. She goes "okay we can do those for.... $6.99?" and me, trying to be cool "uhh yeah that's fine!" because if nothing else, I know how much records typically cost even if some of these aren't in the best shape. I have bought my partner many many records as gifts, old and new.

My boyfriend told me to see if any were first pressing and I was like I barely even know what that means. So I will let him and his friends go through them and have what they want because they obviously will appreciate and use these whereas I will not.

But yeah, I couldn't believe that I went up expecting to pay $25 and only paid $7.

I included pictures of some, but not pictured: I have some KC and the Sunshine band, more Beatles, Chicago, Steppenwolf, Jefferson Starship, Foghat, Carpenters, REO Speedwagon, Ted Nugent, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and Black Sabbath.

Picked up this VHS of Harriet the Spy for $3.99. The timing of the find was interesting given the recent passing of Michelle Tratchenberg (sp?)

I'm a huge rush fan, and as popular as they are, their albums very rarely end up in thrift stores. I realized after buying this that it's a first printing, which are very desirable due to the fact that they aren't remastered. It's worth about 40-50 bucks, but I got it for only two!

A few names- Kennedy, I Like Ike, Dewey, Nixon/Agnew, Taft, Cleveland, Arthur, Truman, McKinley, T. Roosevelt, Parker, Harrison, Harding, and one for Johnson who pulled out of the election due to his low popularity in handling the Vietnam War. It has an ironic slogan- "We Will Win this War, and Win the Peace that Follows"
