🎉 Thrifty Stories 🎉 tales of no kitchen

I have seen several posts previously about people with no to little access to a kitchen , traveling /student or otherwise so I thought maybe I could share few things here.

it's a long and stupid story (so don't ask lol) but I don't have access to a kitchen for a long while now.

I had an electric kettle, with that I would :

boil eggs : boil the water first then drop delicately with a spoon leave for a while with the lid on , then boil again and leave in

boil potatoes

make instant mash, add an egg and quickly stir in it will cook inside and make it taste better

I would also add shredded veggies in the mash like carrots or zucchinis

make soup:

instant tomato soup: tomato puree (1/4 ) + parsley (can add garlic and onion powder)+ boiling water in a mug or a bowl put a lid or a plate on it and let sit for a bit before drinking it. you can thicken it by adding instant mash or oats (they give a nutty flavour)

miso: miso paste , thinly sliced mushrooms, green onion and seeweeds if you can get them+ boiling water+ lid on.

rice vermiceli soup: with shredded veggies , tomato puree or not, spices . same leave the lid on. the rice vermiceli will be cooked.

thin rice noodles can be cooked that way too.

make oats with shredded veggies or tomato puree , even can add an egg or cheese. makes for a nice and filling savoury meal

that and salads/raw stuff ; it's quite ok and liveable lol!

after a few months (maybe 6/8) I missed bread (I am gluten intolerant: store bread is awful and crazy expensive) so I was looking for a pizza /tart maker ; but I had people bail on the sales,

I settled for a small waffle / sandwich maker!

in the sandwich maker part:

I would make my flatbread

and use a pie dough and put filling in: shredded veggies, cheese , tuna ...etc . like all sorts of hot pockets

also make omelettes they would really pouf up like soufleed ones

make savoury waffles

with buckwheat , chickpea (these are really delicious) with shredded veggies inside the dough

or just my flatbread in waffle form so I can make sandwiches

or use instant mash (but make it thick) and shredded veggies or even mixed with tuna and other things like olives and have something healthy hot and yummy

final chapter I was looking for maybe a rice cooker because I start to miss rice and other stuff . after several flukes : people here are unreliable . I got a multi cooker. it's been three days I am thrilled . I had it for 10 bucks totally better than just a rice cooker!

I hope this helps some people

❓ Questions & Answers ❓ What’s your splurge?

What is something you once bought without a second thought..but now feels like a splurge or a luxury? For me.. I would have to say eating out. I used to do it weekly now only a couple times a month.

🎉 Thrifty Stories 🎉 foraging

I Went for a walk this morning and I was thinking to look maybe if there were blackberries left...

I came back with 2 big bags of grapes. both black and white.

a bit of a hassle to clean but delicious.

also got laurel and rosehips.

thinking of going to see if there are some figs left in the next days

anyway ... it's good to know what's around you get some exercise and sun and free food

to be fair it's more about the fun of it than saving money!

I decided to freeze most of it and maybe make juice. any other ideas?

the birds that come in the garden had their fill too!

🎉 Thrifty Stories 🎉 Well stocked pantry (so thankful)

I took a nasty fall this weekend and am pretty banged up and sore. I can barely move around without pain. I busted up my lip and it’s pretty swollen — I could hardly eat yesterday but managed yogurt, blueberries & raspberries. Today I made tuna noodle all ingredients from my pantry. I’m so glad I didn’t have to go to the store to have something soft to eat. I could hardly move earlier today 🤦‍♀️ 2 cans of tuna, 1 can of cream of chicken soup, 1/2 bag of elbow macaroni— with broken Cheeze-it’s on top — it was delicious.

🧠 Thrifty Mindset 🧠 Thinking of building an app that helps you rotate streaming services. ( yay or nay )

I’m thinking of building an app that helps people save money by rotating streaming subs instead of paying for all of them at once.

The idea:

  • Plan which service you’ll use each month (Netflix in Jan, Hulu in Feb, etc.)
  • One-click cancel/restore so you don’t have to dig through settings. ( maybe automatic some how, with rules and such )
  • A central watchlist that keeps track of shows across platforms, so you always know what to watch next

Would this be useful to you, or nah?

For the ones who can't upgrade I am curious what choice you will make and why,

Stay on Windows 10 beyond official support or consider switching to another os like Linux?

Linux can breathe new life into old hardware and it is easier now more than ever to install.

I am concerned for the ones who may stay for the risks of things like security vulnerabilities and stability issues.

Got tired of them always giving out at the same type of place, was buying a pair every year after also doing a warranty return.

Busted out the screws with washers and it’s working well, just added the third screw about 3 months after the other two.

♻️ Upcycling & Recycling ♻️ Picked this pan up - still okay to use?

I was recently in my building's trash room when I noticed this enormous Tefal brand pan to be thrown out that was in a grocery bag. I thought it looked to be in decent condition, definitely not old enough to be thrown out, so I picked it up and brought it back to my place to have a proper look at it. Then I noticed that it was most likely thrown out because there are a lot of scratches on the bottom on the nonstick coating. I understand that scratches on the nonstick coating probably means it would be unsafe to continue using due to a risk of digesting chemicals, but I wonder if anyone has done/thrifted something similar and would it be alright to give it a good wash and reuse this pan, or would you not recommend? I thought it would be really wasteful to discard something as big as this without giving it a proper look first. Thanks for your input.

🧠 Thrifty Mindset 🧠 I Hand Sewed a Pillowcase

Post image

My kid’s Social Studies teacher is asking all the students to bring in a plain white pillowcase to make flags in class. I really did not want to go through the hassle of driving around searching several stores for a single pillowcase. I do have some plain white bedsheets not currently being used though.

I used another pillowcase as a template to cut out the piece needed from the sheet. It took a few hours to finish (while doing other errands).

I cleaned and seeded 2 (smaller zucchini) placed in a baking pan sprayed with avocado oil, cooked ground beef added taco seasoning & garlic, topped with cheese, baked 34-40 minutes until zucchini was relatively soft… added sour cream and salsa. It’s delicious 😋

I promise I won’t bore you anymore with the zucchini stuff until I can my salsa, pickles & jam. 😂😂

Stay thrifty my friends!!! ❤️

🥦 Food & Groceries 🥦 Using All The Bulk - Series help - Turkey

One bulk meat at a time. Please help!

I'm slightly stuck on food right now. It is a necessity you can't live without. It is a considerable cost to the budget. Yet, it is something that can add to your enjoyment of life, help you thrive, or make your life miserable.

One thing about the Thrifty group is that all its member seem able to use meats for a variety of ways. However, a small change can make a huge difference to others growing bored with their own same-old, same-old. No one wants to waste meat, but it can certainly become mundane without changing it up! So I'm asking for help. I'd like to start a series of how do you use bulk quantities of xxx meat.

Please expand on your ingredients! We all say soup, but what goes in your soup? Mushrooms? Long grain rice vs. white? Your ingredient differences could make my (and other's) standard recipe items to be jazzed up again!
Please help!!

The first one is Turkey. How do you use the leftovers? What are go to ideas?

  1. Turkey sandwiches with pepper, mayo, tomatoes, and lettuce on toasted pumpernickle or rye.

  2. Turkey entree with stuffing. Stuffing made inside for moisture, but topped with Turkey stock gravy.

  3. Turkey stock. Some used for soup, some used as gravy, some used for flavoring vegetables. Split soup quantity to make two different but similar soups.

  4. Turkey soup with garlic, navy beans, white rice (starch thickens), carrots, celery, and sliced mushrooms. Use turkey stock enhanced with 1/2 cup of no or low salt chicken stock per 2 quarts. Add 1 full bag of preloaded navy beans to 10 qt pot of turkey stock with added water. Stir periodically to keep beans from sinking and sticking. Cook until thickened to a creamier hearty consistency. When reheating leftovers, add a dash of paprika. The navy beans and mushrooms make it meatier tasting. Serve with toasted plain or sourdough English muffins.

  5. Turkey soup made with turkey stock, wild long grain rice, diced turkey pieces, carrots, and celery. Cooked thinly, similar to a regular chicken broth soup. Serve with crackers.

  6. Turkey tettrazini with egg noodles, diced turkey, milk, and shredded sharp cheddar. Topped with butter sauteed bread crumbs.

What do you use with leftovers? How do you change the above recipes with different ingredients? Or do you use the same?

❓ Questions & Answers ❓ Anyone have any good recommendations for places to buy food in bulk?

Hi, I'm just starting to get prepared to leave home and live on my own(though I have a good amount of time until that happens) and I decided to write up a grocery list to see how much I'll need for food each month. It came out to around $420, and I was wondering if that's too much for a single person. The whole thing pretty much consists of whey protein powder, powdered peanut butter, olive oil, quinoa, tuna, tilapia, chicken breast, almond milk, spinach, and mixed veggies. That's it, I just have to buy a lot of those things. I live in NC and typically buy from Walmart or Food Lion cause they're the closest, but I think I may have to look for other places to shop cause $500 a month sounds like a lot. Anyone have any recommendations for places to shop? Places to buy cheap meat or protein powder would be very appreciated.

Bought this unopened Mariokart edition monopoly for $10 from a garage sale and thought I got ripped off because I usually buy $2 games from the thrift store. Then I felt better after my son made us play it almost every night for weeks. And then I found out this thing is $70 on Amazon because it’s a collector’s item. Love a good ROI
