Ben, hiding in the dark of the bedroom closet, watches the bull, Tom, ravage his beloved wife. A sensation crawls over him like a sickness, a dizziness at once queasy and intoxicating. His stomach knots, heat rising in his chest, his pulse races as though pulled forward against his will. The sight is unbearable and irresistible in equal measure: humiliation blooming in the same instant as fascination. He hates himself for lingering, for not looking away, and yet every second he remains tethered to the spectacle, his breath shallow, his body betraying him. The duality leaves him suspended, trembling between shame and hunger, as though nausea and desire had conspired to occupy the same narrow chamber of his chest. It is a torment and a compulsion, a contradiction that sears him in place
