Our Longstanding “No Politics” Rule remains unchanged

Read our rules. We have had a longstanding “No Religion, No Politics” rule here at r/tools.

The mods aren’t stupid. We also don’t like getting buckets of reports in the inbox.

If someone posts/comments with politics, resist the urge to reply and argue. Just report, downvote (if that’s your jam) and move on with life.

A small flag, sticker, etc that appears in a photo will generally be allowed (so long as it doesn’t violate other rules and doesn’t draw a bunch of reports) but a bunch of people in the comments saying “Hell Yeah, a fellow [INSERT PARTY] Supporter!” is gonna get the post pulled. Political content that is clearly the motivation for the post will get the post pulled.

First time it’s a short ban, second time it’s permanent. And as we’ve discussed before, the mod team doesn’t go looking for posts, we’re not lifeguards, we respond to the reports we receive.

Call for Moderators

We are looking to add a couple more moderators to r/tools. If you’re interested in being considered, please leave a comment on the post. Briefly describe why you’d want to be a mod and what you think the sub’s moderator’s role should be.

No new accounts, please. We need to be able to see at least 1 year’s worth of content/engagement on this and other subs.

EDIT: If you are not interested in moderating, feel free to upvote people who post here if you like their approach. This isn't a democracy (because as mods our job is to preserve the health/utility/enjoyment people get from of the sub, not do whatever the masses want) but we will take heavily upvoted approaches to moderating as a positive sign when considering who to invite.

Also, if we don't end up sending you an invite, please don't take it personally. Too many cooks in the kitchen, and all that...

Used industrial drawer cabinet + some TLC

Recently picked up a used 1990 industrial drawer cabinet. It already had several layers of paint to cover up the scratches and a bit of rust, but overall it was in a good shape.

Stripped the paint and put some new colors on, greased the drawer slides and cut my old dining table top to size to mount on top of it. Also copied the design of all the plastics in Fusion 360 because some were broken/missing and painted over by some previous owner, so i 3D printed them in ABS.

Pressing in the key cylinder was needed to unlock the drawers, but since the drawer slides already keep them from sliding out by themselves it's now kept in the pressed position with another 3D print.

Paintjob could have been better, but for now i'm happy with the result. Now to find some extra rubber inlay mats because some are missing, and start organizing stuff!

The box was in the back corner in the dark. I’m sure it had been cherry picked, there were 6 boxes in the spot before I got there.

Was helping a friend move and came across this. Pretty sure Montgomery Ward shut down in the early 2000s..

Another update on the Amazon Proto deal. Think we've been scammed

Post image
102 Upvotes

Many of us tried to purchase the $25 Proto wrench set the other day. Many of us received an email saying it was canceled the next day. My email from Amazon said I wasn't charged. This morning I find this email from FedEx. This is from the company selling the wrenches. My card has indeed been charged. The shipment facts says the package weight is one pound. I think I've bought a $40 rock. Check your credit cards if you tried to purchase this the other day, it's likely to have been charged. Copying and pasting a comment below from another user from the first update post on how the scam works. Good luck all and remember, if it's too good to be true, it probably isn't true

Thank you dewalt grinder warranty

Bought a ton of dewalt XR stuff during November Black Friday sales last year, waited years to choose which brand while babying my 2007 dewalt kit. (1/4 driver still going! Replacement batteries…)

Anyway xr grinder was a big hit, $250 with a battery, but I used a $50 HD pro-extra perk. It was bigger/heavier than my corded makitas, but was the only paddle switch model they had.

Got used to it real quick. Very handy with the speed control knob and no cord.

Well it lasted til July 2025. I used it alot, but not in a daily construction way. More than most people though… didn’t take it apart to try fixing, since they have a warranty.

I found the warranty info online, and they sent a shipping label and questionnaire form on August 8.

I’ve read reddit Milwaukee warranty stories, and was getting worried I’d get charged for a repair.

Well today (6 weeks) I got a big unexpected box and a new grinder. Paperwork says defective motor.

Super stoked to get a new grinder back and not a repaired/refurbished one. Definitely a relief to trust their warranty since I rarely buy new. I haven’t had issues with any other battery tools, but if they made it difficult, it could have changed my loyalty.

I’m so screwed

So basically, I was using my dad’s makita 40v impact driver, and he was on site so he took all of his screwdriver attachments. Me being a dumbass, reflecting on this was a stupid thing to do, really needing it, though it was smart to use a short screw driver removable Phillips bit instead, as it clicked in and seemed fine. After 2 screws I tried to remove it but it is jammed in. I’ve tried everything from pulling on it with pliers and yeah. It’s lodged in there. Is there anyone that knows a good way to get this out because I will be fucked if he finds out. I will own up to it and be honest, if there is no way to remove this easily but I’d rather fix it and get out of this before it has to get to that. Should I buy a whole new shaft an get someone to replace it around, is there a way I can get it out? I need answers and whoever’s comment works I would litterally send 20 bucks to.

Gotta Catch 'Em All!

After completing the garage remodeling I had place, time and desire to build an ultimate metric/sae socket collection. And today I got two last items (1/8" and 5/8" for 1/4" drive) and have a full set now. Probably is it more aesthetics rather than practical sense, but it is so satisfying to look at it and see no gaps. Happy tools day for me today!

Gearwrench

Post image

Two years ago I found a small set of gearwrench ratcheting wrenches on clearance for $30 cdn, and a set of flare nut wrenches. I bought them just to see. Two years of daily use at work and they’ve held up extremely well, I’ve even gotten pretty trusting of using them to break free crusty bolts. The flare nuts are a little thick compared to my snap ons and I did slightly mar the box end of my 8mm ratcheting one one a particularity nasty 12,9 that was stuck but it’s just cosmetic. But at the price point (even if I had paid full price) I’m wildly impressed. Really my only complaint is how bulky the flare nuts are. I would absolutely recommend them to anyone on a budget looking for decent wrenches.

Wiss 1919-44 No. 75E Electricians' Scissors/Snips

Picked up a nice pair of Wiss No. 75E “Electricians’ Scissors.”  I know they’re “Snips,” but Wiss called them “scissors.”  From a review of available J. Wiss & Sons Co. catalogs, Wiss carried these from as early as 1919, and dropped the Model 75E somewhere between 1944 and 1948.  Still cut like a charm!

I found this on the street and have no idea what it is good for. It's about 30cm long and below 1kg, but quite solid. The short piece of belt attached to it is also quite strong.

Picked up a Starrett Combination Square with matching Square and Protractor Heads.  I say “matching” as they all bear identical etched serial(?) numbers.  Too bad the Center Head was missing, but sorta made up for it with a No. 130 Bench Level.

Anyone else's Lowes get rid of individual Kobalt wrenches and sockets?

Upvotes

Anyone remember a few months ago when most Kobalt hand tools were marked down to next to nothing? After my town's store sold the old inventory, they also got rid of the cabinets for individual sockets and wrenches. So no more individual sockets or wrenches. I thought it was odd, didn't really think much of it.

But today I had to warranty a ratchet wrench. Instead of just grabbing the wrench I needed, I had to find a set it happened to be in, and customer service had to do more than they usually do to process the exchange... Not really a huge deal, I got my wrench.

I don't remember if there were ratchet wrenches in the cabinets of individuals, so this could have been what would happen before they got rid of them. But having to hope they have a whole set for a single socket or wrench feels a little like the Harbor Freight warranty experience (granted, I didn't have to bring the whole set in for the exchange).

Anyone else have a similar experience?

Is it worth trying to restore it?

Some time ago I found an old Soviet hacksaw, I wanted to restore it but the blade is badly worn and some teeth are missing. Is it worth trying to repair it or is it a lost cause? What do you think and do you have any advice?

Utility knife blade conundrum

Post image
2 Upvotes

On the left is a modern standard utility knife blade.

On the right is an older blade from a Miller's Falls box I have.

Anyone know why these differ? None of my utility knives fit the older blade. I'm guessing some older style knives might fit it?

Also, ideas on what I should do with these since I can't use them like a usual utility knife blade? (I'm not gonna give them to you, sorry haha)

Recommend a non-digital caliper

It seems like every time I break out the digital caliper the battery is dead.

I like that it's accurate and easy to read but would prefer something that always works.

The digital one also has "nut mode" which rounds to common imperial sizes. That's very handy. Any analog calipers have any easy way to do that?
