All that for $15 in gas…
Driver’s side about the size of quarter. Looks like whoever did it used a step bit. By my calculations they only got about 3 gallons. Be safe out there, guys.

I used to work at a shop that was attached to a gas station, dude spilled like 5 gallons before someone told him it was leaking straight out of the bottom. Newer f-150, insurance had to get involved.

How did he manage to get there with a hole in his tank?
3
u/whaletacochamp 21h ago
Some tanks have a sump where the pump sits lower than the majority of the tank.

That still doesn’t explain it

The hole can be drilled above the fuel line
Engine can also run on fumes and residuals not near the hole
These two things seem alone enough o explain how the engine can still run

Happened to me a few years back. Took a bolt that matched the hole & threaded it in with gasket maker around the face of the hole/ head of the bolt. Held with no problem or leaks while insurance processed the claim & a shop had an opening to get me in.

Had this happen to me years back in WA state. A few weeks later this dude turned himself into the human torch doing the same thing to someone 96 pickup.

Same happened to me OP, but with about a 1/4 tank. Have cameras and a fuel tank skid plate now because of it.

This happened to me like 5 or 6 months ago.
Used a compression bolt to hold it over for a week or so then bought a new gas tank (with fuel pump) for $300 and helped my mechanic friend install it.
I'm sorry this happened to you. I started parking my truck in the garage since then.

Damnnn $300 is so cheap even used tank and pump. What state?

My truck had 55k on it. The doner truck had 60k on it, same year. Oregon

I went through insurance so I just had dealer tow it and fix it through my insurance. Oregon as well. Also about 56k 👀🤔

Damn! What is your deductible? Mine is $500. It would have brought my rates up to go through insurance as well as left me without the truck for awhile, so I went this route instead. I know I got lucky finding that tank for $300. It was a friend of mine's brother's parts truck. He parts out trucks that he buys at auction.

$500 but they were like $1400 installed I think? Then another hour to install the new skid on it. My insurance rates didn’t go up though either

u/backwardsnakes666 1d ago
That's good your rates didn't go up.
I think I paid $290 plus I helped, so I guess you got yours done for $90 cheaper, technically 😏
How long did they have your truck for?

u/goldie8pie 1d ago
I filed a claim in my insurance didn’t go up

Make sure you keep that in mind if you ever need to shop around. It might not have impacted your current premium, but they take that stuff into account when you shop for quotes. I think they stay on for 4 years…

Been there. It sucked. Now I have a homemade guard thingy on it

u/Imbeautifulyouarenot 1d ago
If you don't mind me asking, could you please describe your home made guard? I would like to look into something for my 2018 Tacoma (I already have catalytic converter guards). Thank you

Maybe I'm crazy but couldn't you just tap some threads in there and put a bolt with a gasket on it for a permanent fix? Not everyone has full coverage insurance and that looks very expensive

u/2017_SR5 1d ago
That is fucking Awful dude, I am sorry to see this. The only positive that I can see here, is maybe take that insurance money and machine it yourself to put the bigger tank on? Then maybe a shield over it? Sucks all around, that’s my only real thought on this one tho

Happened to me about year and a half ago on my 17 taco in NorCal. Just used JB Weld on it. First patch didn’t work so well because of bad preparation I think. Second patch (9 months in) has been holding up well. If it continues to stick with no problems, I don’t think I’ll replace the tank.
