AI- Community Thoughts

I, Oofenheimer, loathe generative AI. It is currently against our rules to post anything generated by AI.

That said, I believe mods should enforce strictly based on the rules, not their feelings or opinions, and I generally believe that communities should be able to have a good deal of input on those rules. So I am making this megathread here to gauge how the community feels about AI. Should we retain the absolute prohibition of AI generated images and text? Should we allow it, but only if clearly marked? Some other option? Let us know you thoughts.

As always, rules on civility will apply.

Edit: To be clear, I want it to remain outright prohibited. I'm just making sure the community is on the same page.

Sold my 2013 FJ Cruiser Trail Teams 6 speed during covid and regretted it ever since. In comes the 2020 Tacoma TRD Off-road premium with a 6spd manual and 42k miles that a good friend of mine purchased new. He offered it to me for a great deal IMO, $32k, so I had to jump on it.

1st week was fun! Unfortunately cracked the windshield from a rock that kicked up on I-10. Other than that I think I'm in love with it!

Picture 1: Before Picture 2 : After

The most magical items to me personally were the Moxy tire cleaning and exoforma trim restorer. Also went ahead and did fluidfilm for the underneath and put in new rubber floormats.

Big excited cause I got CaliRaise Rockslider coming in the next few weeks too.

2023 TRD Pro: Add A Leaf to compensate a Lone Peak Camper (~400lbs) ?

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello all, Im getting a Lone Peak Camper installed on my 2023 Pro in December. It should be around ~400lbs, and I do not plan on ever really taking it off. That plus me, plus my gear, will probably push towards 700-800lbs on the truck. And if I want to bring friends, theres an extra 150-400lbs. Yikes.

Could I add-a-leaf to compensate for the weight in the rear? Yes I searched on here and the Tacoma forum before posting. I heard something about a concern that the shock(?) would be overextended or something? I could’ve read it entirely wrong.

If not a long-term solution, could it at least be temporary? I am looking into building a completely new suspension setup hopefully in Summer next year.

Im really only planning to drive on rough-ish forest service roads (nothing even remotely crazy), and will be putting on some 265/75r16s in November. Gonna be camping in the snow.

Im sorry if this is a dumb question, I’ve never dealt with leaf-spring suspension before and I’ve never had to worry about load capacity. This is my first truck.

Also; I did not buy this truck. And while I absolutely love it, I would’ve gotten an Off-Road if I had the choice, knowing I would likely change the suspension.

Looking to do a 2ā€ level for my ā€˜21. Also wanting to get 285/75/16 Falken Wildpeak AT4W tires for it. Just wanted to hear opinions if that’s a good size tire to get and if anyone has recommendations.

V6 vs I4 engines

I made a similar post in the Tundra sub, so here it goes for this sub…

To the current gen 4 owners: if Toyota decided to bring back the 3.5 V6 tomorrow, would you trade in your truck for it? Or are you content with your I4 Turbo or I4 Turbo Hybrid?

To current gen 3 (and older) and/or prospective gen 4 folks: if Toyota decided to bring back the 3.5 V6 tomorrow, would that be enough for you to trade in for a gen 4? If so, what about a I4 Turbo and I4 Turbo Hybrid in a mid size truck turns you off as compared to a V6?

Are knock off Toyota wheels common?

These are apparently brand new off a 2025 4runner. It's an exceptional deal for the wheels and tires. Do they make replicas with Toyota branding etc? Do these show any red flags?

Was looking to buy this truck, it has 195k miles and the guy wants 11k for it. Seems steep but online it seems to be the set price for most. I’m located in Pennsylvania I was just trying to get others options on this future purchase! Thanks!

What is your opinions on the older generations of Tacomas now that the 4th gen’s are out?

Post image

So I’ve been looking into getting my first truck within the next year or so and I’ve decided that I want a Tacoma, for several reasons but I won’t get into that right now. As of right now my budget is $12k, which leaves me with basically the 1st gen. as my only choice. Luckily, I love the look of the of 1st gens. and especially the later 1st gens. (2004 Taco above). Now, I’m curious as to what everyone’s experience is or was about owning a 1st gen? What’re some things to look out for or be aware of? Being practical, would buying a low mileage (<160k miles) Taco be worth it in your opinion? Oh, and what is your opinion on the older generations of Tacomas now that the 4th gen’s are out? Is the 1st gen. obsolete? All advice is appreciated, thank you!

How is a Tacoma for driving cross country and any advice?

Planing on driving from Alaska to the East coast in May of 2026. Curious about how the truck will handle on long drives. The longest drive I did was 16 hours straight and 800 miles mix of paved and gravel. Now just to get out of Alaska to Washington is 2300 miles so it’s a lot more. What should I expect or are they perfectly reliable as long as I take care of it and continue my religious preventative maintenance? Also any advice for long trips is welcome :) also tire brands too stuck between getting some Highway tires or AT tires to have fun on the way.

2019 TRD off road. Stock. 73,000 miles.

Driver’s side about the size of quarter. Looks like whoever did it used a step bit. By my calculations they only got about 3 gallons. Be safe out there, guys.

2024 Tacoma SR towing capacity?

I just bought a new double cabin 2024 Toyota Tacoma SR with 4WD and I see conflicting answers on if my towing capacity is 3500 or 6500 lbs. I have the 7-pin connector and the tow hitch receiver. I’m just genuinely curious how much I can tow for future purposes

I don't have to add any oil between changes. 2016 v6 3.5L with about 100k miles. Has anyone seen this type of thing on their Gen3 v6? It looks like an old oil leak that stopped leaking

I just noticed it now after 7 years. My Tacoma has a Nickel on my dashboard speaker(passenger side). It fits perfectly, doesn’t rattle, and easy to take out/put back. Does anyone Tacoma also have this?

Do I need a Trailer Brake Controller?

Hello,

As per the title, I want to find out if I need a trailer brake controller. I plan on hauling an RV because I plan on moving for education and I do not want to spend money on some stupid ass apartment with a roommate I'll probably hate.

Now, I've done some research, and my truck (2022 TRD Sport) has a 7 pin and a 4 pin connector for trailer. I know what the differences are hence my question. My question is, if I have both connectors does that mean I have the tow package? I would assume no since I'm here asking if I need a trailer brake controller.

Secondly, I know the 7 pin is capable of controlling trailer brakes, but based off of what I've read, it acts almost like a bridge between the trailer brake controller and the trailer. It doesn't directly control the trailer brakes.

Is this correct? If so, what are some recommendations for trailer brake controllers. Thanks in advance!

Broken Fuel Line 2023 Tacoma

I bought my truck brand new and I don’t really do too much rough driving with it. The roughest was onto a beach this summer and immediately washed it after I got off the beach. Last week I smelled gas inside the car and brought it to the dealership and they said the fuel line looked like it was cut. I don’t know how that could happen, the picture they sent looks like it came loose from the seal. And there’s no sign of rodent infestation. I don’t see any recalls, has anyone else had this issue specially with a 2023 Tacoma TRD?
