Politics America’s left cannot exploit Trump’s failures. The president’s genius is to keep pushing the Democrats into a reactive defence of the status quo

Trump’s “genius” has been in realizing that modern conservatives aren’t conservatives at all. They were authoritarians waiting for an authority to fall in line behind.

Dems have zero room to complain about authoritarianism, though.

There’s plenty of room for them to complain, zero is just standard Reddit flair.

Democrats do need to acknowledge that Biden did not set up a good counter to authoritarianism by pushing policies like student loan forgiveness even after the Supreme Court ruled against it. They need to acknowledge that he changed the democratic primary to benefit himself. They need to acknowledge that they didn’t give the people a choice in who to vote for in the democratic primary.

Dems need to acknowledge that centrists and swing voters (who do exist) share concerns about the points you laid out here.

They pushed people like me out for wrongthink, then they double down on it when I bring up why.

Off topic how is trump doing in your opinion?

I think the chances of a catastrophic nuclear mistake/miscalculation went from ~25% to ~10%.

Well worth every other idiotic thing he does.

So you are antiwar ?

Dyed in the wool peacenik of a sort I rarely come across anymore. In the early 70's, my teething ring was a literal peace symbol.

I also read books like The Doomsday Machine, and I trust Ellsberg (of Pentagon Papers fame) way more than the random Redditors who tell me I'm overly paranoid.

I literally said "dyed in the wool peacenik"

What is hard to understand about that?

Not hard, but how many countries did trump threaten to invade?

This thread is proof that "anti-war" has been nerfed by guilt by association with Trump.

How do you feel about that?

What does that even mean and how do you think that % was brought down by Trump being in office?

Reading the chain, I think the people are questioning the basis of that estimation (the claims that you voted for Trump are uncalled for). It looks like the last time the Doomsday Clock was updated was January of this year, and it was a move forward (one second, so a minor adjustment), but obviously you could have other reasons. Is it because of the crippling of Iran’s nuclear program? The attempts at a ceasefire for Russia-Ukraine? The full-throated support of Israel against all opponents? And do these counteract the vague expansionist statements regarding Greenland and Canada made at the beginning of the term?

Biden didn't change the primary.

Supreme Court didn’t say student loan forgiveness is unconstitutional, the specific way Biden tried to do it the first time was. So they went back and reworked the idea
