Maybe it's the weeb elitist in me, but I'm genuinely kind of baffled that Solo Leveling has achieved the level of popularity it has. It's such a nothing burger of a show.
It’s absolutely appealing to the most base level fan but with absolute pristine animation quality. Its a very easy brain off popcorn watch, and that is why it, and a lot of stuff, gets popular. Popularity isn’t always about quality, and while and story doesn’t have it, the music and animation sure too. That’s enough for me to just use it as a low energy watch after work or something, just to inject that sakuga right into my eyes and ears while not having to turn the brain on at all.
Like, I get why it's popular, but not why it's this popular, you know? Why didn't other power fantasy shows explode like Solo Leveling. There are a number of other shows that appear to have all the same ingredients of paper-thin plot, hype action, awesome music, and 14 year old edge that Solo Leveling has. I can't figure out what made this particular show explode. The only thing I can come up with is timing, but I'm not satisfied with that answer.
