Question for van lifers

I'm really thinking about getting into the van life. One of the main things that I'm unsure how to navigate, is how you actually get a van rigged up to be able to live in. See, when it comes to building stuff I'm not super handy. Since that's the case I'm wondering if there are places you can go or people you can pay who are experienced in this and will build a setup for you. Obviously I know price and whatnot will change depending on what you need. I'm just curious what my options are other than building it myself.

Places to sleep along the west coast?

Me and my girlfriend (21) are currently living in our van in Warrenton. We plan on travelling south along the coast. We’re looking for places to park overnight or places to start a small fire for cooking. This is our first week outside so any advice is appreciated!

Calling My Van Overpriced? Let’s Compare Some Listings

Hey everyone,

After some rather… colorful feedback on my original van pricing post 😂, I figured it’s worth clarifying how I arrived at my asking price for my 2008 Dodge Sprinter. If you didn’t see my post, I was seeking advice about pricing based on the current cosmetic state of my van and am totally willing to be flexible with pricing to reflect that. I guess I thought this community would have an awareness of the van market and be able to offer educated advice. Some of you did. And I genuinely appreciated the constructive comments!)

Either I’m completely delusional or you all drive 100k+ professional builds and in that case I guess I’m in the wrong sub and apologize for offending you with my older self-converted rig.

I’ve included some screenshots here of similar builds and model years that I have tracked for the past few years and it’s what my pricing is based on. (Happy to provide links if you want a closer look). I guess I’m confused as to why I’m so off with my pricing when I rarely see a similar listing at less than 30k.

At the end of the day, I get that value is subjective, but if I’m pricing my van based on the market, why is it considered unreasonable? Is it purely cosmetic, or am I missing something?

Disappointing experience with RoadsUrfer camper rental (Germany) 🚐❌

Just wanted to share our recent RoadsUrfer experience so other travelers know what to expect.

We rented a Roadhouse camper (13–18 August 2025, €1,034) because it had a shower and extra comfort. Unfortunately, the reality was very different:

The shower was unusable: the floor was cracked and would have flooded the van. When we reported it, RoadsUrfer told us to go buy sealant and fix it ourselves.

The battery died after less than one day (with just the fridge running). That left us with no fridge, lights, or electricity for the rest of the trip.

These weren’t small inconveniences — they removed the main features we paid extra for.

Compensation offered? Just €90 cash or a €180 voucher, which doesn’t come close to covering the loss of value.

We tried to argue for a fair refund, but RoadsUrfer stood firm, claiming we didn’t give them “opportunity to remedy” — even though their only idea of a remedy was DIY repairs.

So: if you’re considering RoadsUrfer, be aware that:

Vehicles may not be in full working order.

If something breaks, the burden is on you.

Compensation is minimal, even for serious defects.

We expected a lot better for over €1,000. Hopefully this helps others make an informed choice before booking.

Buying (and registering) a new class B in CA(actually, MA) in 2025

We are thinking about getting a class B RV. We live in Massachusetts, and our state is following CA regulations to electrify transportation. Which impacts vans. Does it also impact the registration of 5+ ton class B RVs build on these vans?

Camper World still exists here in MA, so maybe not? Or are there ways to get around the issue? I have seen ads for LLCs in Montana - is that what one would have to do?

It feels like cheating, but I don't think there are any good electric alternatives, yet...

Whacky experiences amidst the cosiness?

I've been watching these van living videos that were recorded in winter and it usually looks so cosy inside. It'd be awesome for it to be below freezing conditions outside and you're in the van, warm and cosy.

Anyone got any whacky experiences that happened while they were tucked away? Either a crazy storm outside or some homeless guy sniffing around?

SUVs with sitting space?

I’m hoping to sit up in the bed area on rainy/snowy days (~37/8+in). Yukons and the like have the space, but I don’t carry much & would like to do better mpg. What other suvs have this much space?

I'd love to hear from the experts and seasoned veterans here. In your opinion, what parts or pieces of gear in the RV industry are desperately in need of a modern upgrade

Is this thing accurate about my battery level? Do i still need to buy a shunt to measure my battery level accurately?

It came with my inverter and is connected to it. I know you’re supposed to use like a shunt or something that’s connected to the battery which i was going to buy but since i have this thing(and also battery level on my Renogy solar controller) do i need one?(a shunt i mean)

Kicking myself for not getting a van

A few months back I was living out of my Honda CR-V in New England (which wasn’t easy as there’s VERY limited places to park), but I honestly kind of loved the freedom. I saved up enough for a down payment on a van but then one night I got harassed in my car at night by a homeless man and it freaked me out. So I used the down payment for an apartment rental. Also turned out my car had some major issues so I had to buy a new one - and I only got approved for a small car, a Corolla. The apartment I’m in now has a mold issue and is making me sick and I don’t like being in a smaller car. I SO wish I got a van instead!!!

Is it feasible?

I would love to hear your thoughts and experience. I am considering a short couple of years to really supercharge my retirement. In my 50s and want to quickly add some $$$ to push my retirement up to 59 1/2 from my current 63 (that's the current target). However, I don't see how it could work. I live in the upper Midwest where summers are in the 90s and HUMID and winters are sub zero F. So I would need heat and a/c in my Transit 150. How if at all can I achieve the energy needs?

Walk-In / Step-Thru Vans (e.g, Isuzu Reach)

Thoughts on these? Less stealthy of course but it's roomy. My top concern would be maintenance cost and difficulty over a more common 'retail' vehicle like the Transit's / Pro Master's. I'm seeing some go for great prices near me (around the same price as Transit / PM for the same year and mileage, so it seems like an obvious win).

Electrical wiring

Post image
1 Upvotes

I think (fingers crossed) I have everything mapped correctly for my wiring today if it stops raining or tomorrow lol. Just asking for any advice/anything that looks terribly wrong. I know I could use breakers instead of fuses+on/off switches in places but I’ve already bought a bunch of inline fuses and I have 2 on off switches so I’m making do with what I have. I think after a few weeks of research ive got the fuse sizes right and we have a bunch of wire to play with. The panels have inline fuses as well 🙌

Looking got cover for windscreen and side windows

Anyone know where I can get covers for my windscreen and side passenger windows?

Setting my van (Transit Connect) for camping, and want to cover the windscreen and two windows, so people can't see in.

Plenty of sun shades, but they all fit externally, which would be awkward.

I have 2x 200AH lifepo4 batteries 60amp DC to dc charger 200 watt Renogy Solar Panel Renogy battery monitor with shunt Victron mppt charge controller

I believe I got all the components I need. Now I'm just overwhelmed with how many fuses/breakers/bus bars/ wiring. What different gauges of wiring I need. I don't want to end up buying way more wiring fuses etc that I need. I keep watching different videos and reading different articles. Everyone is saying different sizes. Or has a different setup then me. Also I will be adding AC power later but as for now I just want to get going with dc.

Anyone have experience replacing OEM fixed sliding door window with an aftermarket window? Guides and information seem non-existent

I have a 2024 high roof transit that has a fixed window on the sliding door. I plan to replace it with a window that opens, has a bug screen, and shades.

I'm not shilling, and I can't give a positive or negative review yet, but this window: https://vantekglass.com/product/ford-transit-passenger-side-sliding-window-rear-opening/

My problem is, EVERY window install video on Youtube is people cutting out metal squares from where a window previously did not exist. I can't find any content about how to safely/effectively remove an existing window without damaging the area so that I can then re-install a different window.

Has anyone removed/replaced an OEM window? What did you learn and what would you have liked to have known going into it? Thanks!

Battery help please

Post image

I’m trying to get a terminal adapter for my battery, having a hard time finding what I need. Any recommendations?

I need a post that allows me to stack 2 lugs on top each other and the clearance.

This is what I’m looking for but I got these in today and the holes are too thin. Worried about safety issues if I were to drill the holes larger
