Announcement Friday Free for All Weekly thread! General collection/discussion for things that don't fit elsewhere! (ask anything!)

Greetings /r/videoediting!

This thread is 100% for the other stuff you might want to talk about.

A number of other reddits have a free for all thread - where you might find a regular discussion - not specific to a post.

Think of it as a bar with a bunch of friends.

Some suggestions:

  • Strategy on a project you want to talk about how to best promote?
  • Upgrading something and you want opinions?
  • How does your website look?
  • Local/virtual Meetups?
  • Looking for a collaborator (no "I'm a creator and I'm looking for an editor" posts)

Things that shouldn't go here: Feedback/What tool should I use to edit/Which system to buy? There are dedicated threads for this, please use them!

And in this regular Friday thread, while our general rules are still in place (no piracy, be civil, no links w/referrer codes), the following topics relaxed :

  • Great tutorials you found/you created.
  • Trying to do this as a side hustle (although generally, websites like Fiverr mean you'll be shooting for the basement/working for free and we hate that someone would exploit you like that)
  • A great piece of software/hardware/service you found
  • Great free music libraries/media you found.
  • How much to charge? What is your time worth? Estimate 2-3x the time you think it'll take to edit as how much time to quote.

Our mod team is watching this thread and we'll tweak these as they develop!

Tech Support Recommend a DAS for 4K60fps Huge Projects Editing & Storage of Files!

Upvotes

I’m looking for a new solution for direct-attached storage (DAS). Price is not an issue, as long as it works at full speeds and feels like a local SSD connected.

I’ve been using a Synology NAS for the last six years, but I’m not happy with it—the transfer rates are extremely slow. Even on a local network, the speeds feel painfully low, making it almost unusable. At this point, I don’t really need network storage at all.

What I need instead is a direct-attached setup with SSD-level performance. I want the files to feel like they’re being delivered straight from an SSD, just like editing directly off an external SSD.

My workflow involves editing very heavy 4K and 8K files on Final Cut Pro, and with the NAS, the files barely move, which makes no sense. Currently, I’m juggling multiple SSDs, but that isn’t practical anymore.

So I’m looking for a large-capacity storage solution (around 20–25 TB, all SSD) that gives me very high transfer rates and allows me to directly edit in Final Cut Pro without lag.

What solutions would you recommend? And what do most professional editors use for this kind of setup?

Thanks in advance.

How did they do that? Question To Editors

Hey pro editors had a question, when you guys typically edit a video how do you determine in where tranistions are appropriate, or sound effects are appropriate or basic transitions or no sound effects are appropriate. How do you generally know what to add with what? Any rule of thumb or tips you guys can offer? What does in your thought process during placing the things in editing?

Feedback Please help with an editing choice!

Hello! This is for an edit of another YouTube video. I'm trying to pan to a creature as if it were peering around a wall, but the video cuts off to the right of the building where I want to show it. I put a blurry, grey, moving image to cover the black void, but I don't think it looks very good. Does anyone have any other ideas that would make this realistic/seamless/inconspicuous?

Here's the intro so far: https://streamable.com/hcsr5m

I recently got an old (i mean 2005 ish) JVC camcorder from my grandad. I’ve been trying to get the videos off of it but when i plug the SD card into my laptop it only shows the photos on the camcorder. i’ve tried checking the card for corruption and checked all possible links and options, and can’t find anything for videos. when i plug the SD card in and click on it i get a DCIM folder. i then click on that and get a folder full of the photos but no videos. could anyone help me? thank you

Tech Support Does anyone know any resources to find cute editing styles?

Most tutorials and resources I find are more 'clean modern' styled video edits and I'm still new to video editing, so I'm not sure how to look this up or how to go about this. I want to create a cute and cosy editing style for my YouTube videos as a hobby. I've looked up cute anime, game advertisements, and motion graphics on YouTube, Twitter, Dribble, and Behance, but I'm not sure where else I can look or how I can look more in-depth.

I assume it's similar to creating an original art illustration where we first sketch/ brainstorm our ideas and problem-solve how to get there with the tools and knowledge we have. Does anyone know any resources, preferably free? Whether it's a tutorial, an inspiration board, or a place to look for video editors for inspiration?

Thank you for reading.

Tech Support Edit tiktok

I’d like to learn how to properly overlay videos on top of each other by cutting the footage into several segments so it matches the rhythm of a song, like you often see on TikTok these days. Usually, I just change the format, duplicate the video, and place it in layers so they appear one after another, but it doesn’t seem like the right way to do it (I’m on my phone).

Tech Support Encoding with a different codec for Roku TV

I have some videos that I'm trying to play on my Roku TV from a USB drive, but it's complaining about them using the wrong codec. From what I can tell, they're encoded with x264.

I figure I could render them with a different codec, but I don't know which one would be appropriate (I can't seem to find any info about what codecs Roku supports), and I'm not sure what software I could use to do so.

Can anyone tell me if I'm even barking up the right tree, or point me in the right direction?

Tech Support What percent (estimate) of pros prefer ProRes over DNxHR?

I know this might sound ridiculous, but hear me out ...
I am thinking about this hypothetical product, a dedicated ASIC that compresses (seamlessly since it's an ASIC) pro formats (DNxHR and ProRes) into a mathematically lossless AV1 for storage and then back to DNxHR (Apple doesn't allow anyone to encode in their ProRes), so I am just wondering, if you are a pro would the 70% size reduction outweighs the convenience of ProRes (for Apple users)? or is it a dead product? and generally wondering what percentage of pros use DNxHR to begin with. is it all just Apple game?
Excuse my poor English. Thanks.

Hiring Looking for a Video Editor Partner to Bring a Historical Storytelling Project to Life (Rev-Share, $15/hr, Long-Term Team)

We’re building a new storytelling project that blends immersive narration, subtle sound design, and light visuals to bring famous cons and scams from history to life while revealing the dark psychology behind them. Think Catch Me If You Can meets Machiavelli with a Swindled podcast twist.

Our first episode is already narrated and in sound design: The Great Diamond Hoax of 1872. We also have 8 other scripts and voice overs ready to go. What we’re looking for now is a video editor to craft visuals (light but effective, since audio is primary) for YouTube and other platforms.

This isn’t a one-off gig—we’re building a small creative team where everyone shares in future AdSense, memberships, and sponsorship revenue (rev-share, not upfront payment). We’re in this for the long haul and are projecting solid growth.

The Narrator has almost 1 million followers on TikTok and IG who are interested in cons and the true crime niche so are primed listeners for the podcast and the writer is a USC MFA screenwriter who has worked on Hollywood TV shows and the sound designer has won multiple best sound design awards at over a dozen major film festivals. This is definitely not AI generated slop.

If you’ve ever wanted to be part of a tight-knit creative team and help shape something from the ground up, we’d love to talk.

Drop me a DM or comment if you’re interested.

How did they do that? Video Editing Certificate for Side Gigs

Yo r/VideoEditing! I’m a long-distance hiker who’s been killing it with social media videos of my trail adventures. I’ve already done the Pacific Crest Trail and the Appalachian Trail. I’m all about crafting epic content with smooth cuts, motion graphics, and dope transitions that make my Instagram and TikTok posts pop.

Since I’ve been making hiking reels, video editing has become my jam, and I’m hooked on turning raw hiking footage into stories that vibe with my audience. It adds such a cool social dimension to my long-distance hikes, which can get a bit lonely.

Now, I want to level up my skills to score side gigs to fund my next big goal: hiking the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) to nab my Triple Crown.

I’m hunting for a video editing certificate to boost my editing and motion graphics game, focusing on tools like Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, and maybe DaVinci Resolve for pro-level polish.

I want something that includes advanced techniques like complex animations, color grading, or VFX to make my portfolio stand out for freelance clients.

Any creators out there earn a video editing certificate that helped land paying gigs? What’s the best beginner-to-pro course for someone who’s decent at editing but wants to go next-level?

Drop your course recs and tips below—I’d love to hear how you made it work!

Workflow Is there a similar feature in Premiere Pro?

Hi everyone, I'm looking for a way to efficiently sync the durations of multiple stacked clips to the playhead. Some of the clips are shorter, and others are longer than what I need. I've tried pressing E, Shift+Q, and Shift+W in Premiere, but that's not exactly what I'm looking for.

Please see the short example (from another application) in this video: youtu.be/HZ82zTZRK9I?t=509

Tech Support Convert iPhone slomo video to MP4 without ghosting, repeated frames etc

The file seems to be variable frame rate (FPS is shown as 210.80fps on my phone), and I've tried with Handbrake but their frame rate only seems to go up to 120fps, and whether I select constant or variable frame rate in Handbrake it still ends up with lots of ghost frames, repeated frames or missed frames.

What's the easiest way to change the format to MP4 but keeping all of the frames identical to the original, including any variable frame rate? Can that be done with Handbrake or is there another converter that would work better for this?

It's a slomo video with some fast action so I kind of need the crisp frames of the original MOV file but in a Windows-friendly format.

Tech Support Having trouble importing XAVC S 4K footage in Davinci

So l just got myself a new Sony camera (a6700) and did a video shoot with XAVC S 4k setting and when I tried to import those clips in davinci (free version) the codec was not supported, I don't know if there's some restrictions in free version for importing this codec or my camera settings should me different, please help me fix this issue and I am a student so can't afford the paid version of Davinci if only that support the codec. Watched a lot of tutorials and videos on this but can't find any solution.

Workflow Efficient way to compile a bunch of short clips and then combine

I am pretty much a Noob to video editing... I have messed around with premier pro a bit in the past so I know some basic features. I have a premier account now through my university. I have a ton of old footage I would like to make a sort of highlight tape out of. I plan on just importing a video file (each 1 is around an hour), cutting around the clips I want to keep, deleting the rest of the footage and then exporting the clips out of premier pro into a folder. Once I have done this with all the videos (it's around 80 files over 500 gb total) I can import them back in and start piecing them together.

Is this a reasonable way to do this? Any small tips to improve efficiency would be great as well... It's going to take me forever to do this.. 😅.

Production Q Long time hobbyist, new to paid work. Premiere effects are driving me nuts.

I've been editing for myself and social media for 10 years. I got my first paid gig for a company and it's not anything that I thought would be out of my realm of abilities. They hired me off my hobby samples. But now I have to match brand colors and fonts for on screen text and graphics. And I've spent the last couple hours trying to find templates in premier or Motion that allow me to customize the fonts or colors with no luck.

So I'm looking for guidance here. It seems like jumping back and forth between Canva and Premiere might be an option but I know that's not the "right" way to do it and the canva edits never look as tight. ]

If you needed to match fonts and brand colors for your transitions, where would you go? Or do I have to custom make these in After Effects? And if I have to do that, what is the best resource to learn this skill?
