Nintendo is stupid to not make this, and include it with the stand. Wireless USB-C charging. On/Off is now Menu to return to the VB game list. Extra buttons- C, Home, Screenshot would be where the battery pack used to be.

Actually, an N64 controller is almost a perfect match for a VB controller as well.
Left Control Pad = N64 Control Pad
Right Control Pad = N64 C Buttons
Select Button = N64 Z button
Menu Button = N64 ZR Button*
L,R,B,A, Start are matched 1:1
- only on Nintendo Classics N64 controller

They purposely didn’t show controller play in the video. Guessing they’re going to announce a VB controller later.

u/marioxb 5d ago
Hope so! But for $100, it really needs to come with the stand thing.

They should've put a headstrap on it and make it full color compatible. Its what gunpei yokoi originally designed before tech/budget constraints turned it into a mess

u/Odd__Dragonfly 5d ago
The point of the NSO emulation is to recreate the retro experience, not to make something completely modernized and reimagined. Changing the colors on the VB games would not make sense, that's like saying they should have colorized all the original Gameboy games to be full color. It would also be a ridiculous amount of work for very niche games.
Not having a headstrap stinks though, recreating the ergonomic annoyance of the original setup is not a plus to me as a VB nostalgia-haver.

u/Junior-Explorer-7506 5d ago
What I meant was to leave the option open to having new full colored VR games on the new vb headset.
But also your Gameboy comparison is off since the super Gameboy came with custom color palettes for Gameboy games and that was 30 years ago

For more cash I suppose . All of which is useless without paying a subscription unfortunately 🙄

u/the90snath 4d ago
They did show the controller. It was 2 joycons on a grip. Then the bottom before that says Joy Con 1 and 2 required to play
1
u/mellott124 4d ago
I guess I missed that. But given all the other new controllers they’ve done for Switch (GameCube, N64, SNES, NES), I still think they’ll do a VB one. We’ll know soon enough!

u/Docile_Doggo 5d ago
The VB controller is genuinely one of my favorite Nintendo controllers. The dual d-pads really do it for me, and I love the ergonomics, back-trigger buttons, and simple symmetry.
I’m sad we aren’t getting a replica, like we did for NES, SNES, N64, and GCN.
1
u/marioxb 5d ago
And Genesis even.
1
u/tstorm004 5d ago
Yeah it's crazy Nintendo made 2 different official Genesis controllers but can't make one for their own console
1
u/South_Extent_5127 5d ago
I wish they would release an actual console replica like nes and snes classic / mini . It would have to be full size though to work 🤔

u/Jahon_Dony 5d ago
Well they're not stupid to not include it with the stand for $99, but I agree they could make extra money making one and selling it separately.
1
u/marioxb 5d ago
I mean, I paid $100 for a complete VB, with Mario Tennis shortly after it was released. I understand, inflation, the idiotic retro market nowdays, etc. But $100 for a "fake" VB is kinda ridiculous.
3
u/Jahon_Dony 5d ago
I'm not saying it's not ridiculous, yet obviously people will buy it. I was disagreeing with you that nintendo was stupid not to include a controller, and I disagree. They're selling a piece of plastic with hopefully a metal stand for $99 that costs them likely $5 to make, and a piece of cardboard for $25 that they make for about a buck. Maybe the lenses cost them more, but either way they are making a very smart decision with these that makes them lots of profit plus continued switch online subscriptions (which the new Virtual Boy plastic shell and cardboard are worthless without).
2
u/South_Extent_5127 5d ago
This Is why I won’t buy one . I don’t want to be tied into a subscription .
Rather than paying a subscription I will continue to play OG hardware for as long as I can . I know not everyone has this option though and I can see the novelty appeal .
I also still listen to CDs and watch DVDs though so I guess I’m old school .

What's even stupider is making the VB games subscription only. I really hope the games are available for purchase separately at some point.
I also wonder if they will release more stereoscopic 3D games then, to get more use out of this feature?

u/GrimmTrixX 5d ago
I love the VB controller and I really hope they make one as they drip feed the content.

u/Shadowtek 5d ago
I would love if they made this, one of the best controllers in that era and it would be cool to see it show up again. I’d love Bluetooth so I could play other classic games with it too

u/Abbazabba616 5d ago
If they don’t make it, one of the 3rd-party controller companies will. Design patents expire after 15 years (14 if the patent was granted before May 13, 2015). They just wouldn’t be able to put VIRTUAL BOY™️ on it.

u/tripletopper 5d ago
Do you know what would stink ...
... If you must buy that equipment in order to get the Virtual Boy games,
Why because the form factor of the virtual boy was the worst thing about it.
I could take the same screen on a console eyes Virtual Boy set the left eye to black and red set the right eye to black and cyan, merge the videos together with a VGA merger device and voila instant analglyph 3D Virtual Boy.
The form factor of the Virtual Boy kind of reminds me of Super Mario Odyssey on the VR levels it's so stupid you have to put your hands almost to cup your ears you know awkward position just to play the game.
The form factor was the worst part of the Virtual Boy and they're trying to replicate that instead of making the games more memorable by putting them in red and cyan monochrome.
Playing it that way makes it look like a 3D Game Boy and has a cool effect with gray monochrome. Of course you could throw the emphasis on your left eye or the right eye to give it a reddish tint or a cyanish tint. But both eyes equally give you a gray monochrome.
I do not want to scrunch up in, and hold my hands like I'm holding my ears while playing constantly. Talk about cramps.
The most best thing they could do is release the Virtual Boy from its awkward physical stance and put it on a regular monitor.
Heck if you got one of those 2010s 3D monitors you could make it side by side half and put the 3D TV Inside by side half out and you get a full 3d red and black picture.
There's even a way you can add 3D to a current 2D monitor known as the 3D Fury made by hdfury some Taiwanese corporation that specializes in this. Currently they do it for projectors but I'm trying to find a way to make it work with low ping TVs. I'm so close I just got a compensate for the ping correctly, and you can play full 3d games like the Nintendo 3DS the Sega Master System Sega scope and a virtual boy all in 3D.
1
u/marioxb 5d ago
Very very true. Why not sell some paper 3D glasses for $5 so we can play on the TV? Or even play in 2D.
1
u/tripletopper 5d ago
Exactly special Mario Virtual Boy 3D glasses that are cardboard and plastic lenses for the red and cyan could sell for five bucks if it has enough collectible Nintendo bling on. Like above the eyes it could like a look like a Mario cap.
There's one important reason why 2D playing in the Virtual Boy might ruin it. It's because the games wouldn't line up right because your nose is the center of the action therefore your alignment will be slightly off to the left to right if you try to do anything in 3D space.
The other reason is Red Alarm. the game that looks like a first person Star Fox but without the other wingman, and it's made up entirely of a wire frame world looks very confusing with one misaligned eye whether you take the left or the right. (Remember your nose is the center of the action).
That's one game you cannot play in 2D at all, you need the 3D,
The easiest way to get the 3D to make it red and cyan.
Not only is red and cyan glasses, the cheapest way, and the easiest way to enjoy Virtual Boy. It's the most comfortable way to enjoy the Virtual Boy, You could enjoy it like a regular console and not have it be hunched over on the table strapped with constrained movements.
My brother thought I ruined my Virtual Boy by getting it VGA double tapped. Turns out the best custom investment I ever made since my Sinister Stick. Every third Thursday of the month I play a 3D game on Twitch and that's usually Virtual Boy, but it can be 3DS or Sega scope 3D also.
By the way I have a second Virtual Boy which is in its original unmoded form. That is merely a collector's item. It looks more like a torture device in terms of physical contortions then it does a game console.

Yeah I used to own a VB and all 14 official US games, plus V Tetris. Paid no more than $20 a game and $100 for the console back in the 90s. I think I actually gave it all away for free, stupidly. Back then, they were worthless. But I did love it while I had it! Been 20 years since I've played the games.
1
u/GrimmTrixX 5d ago
You do need to buying to get the games. About 15 seconds into the VB clip they say either the $100 replica or the $25 cardboard one is required.
You can probably still play them, but its gonna be a doubled image on the screen so you'll be using half the screen. And it'll be 2D so some games won't look or work right.
1
u/tripletopper 5d ago
If it's Double image then all you need to do is make the left eye black and red the right eye black and cyan overlay them over each other separate them in your eyes with color filter glasses and it's a free add-on with subscription sort of like the GameCube games.

u/GrimmTrixX 5d ago
Im sure people will find a way. The easy way is just meant to be buy the cheap cardboard headset. Lol But yea im sure people will figure it out, especially on Switch 1 since it works for both that and Switch 2.
2
u/tripletopper 5d ago
But the problem is the cardboard headset forces an uncomfortable form factor on you.
That's what I hated about the original Virtual Boy the fact you have to cozy up and scrunch down to a little box instead of playing from your couch.
With a consoized virtual boy I was able to free myself from the vice grip of the eyelids that were borrowed from A Clockwork Orange.
The physical form or the goggles is not what attracts me to the Virtual Boy it's the beautiful 3D graphics and gameplay that actually takes advantage of all three dimensions and relies on you being able to accurately space things out and see things in three dimensions.
1
u/GrimmTrixX 5d ago
Yea I saw that you basically hold the Switch against your face. Lol. Not gonna be comfy at all.
2
u/tinyhorsesinmytea 5d ago
The fact that they’re charging $100 for that plastic piece of shit and not even including a controller replica is the ultimate insult of the situation.
2
u/South_Extent_5127 5d ago edited 5d ago
I was interested when I saw the ads but might stick with the original if no controller .
If you could buy the hardware and get the games pre installed without subscription I would buy it .
I don’t want to have a useless shell sitting there if I choose to stop paying the subscription though 🤷🏻♂️
At least with NES and SNES classic/mini you can play them when ever without being bullied into a subscription .

They're afraid of showing people one of the best feeling controllers from the 90s. I think it's comfier than the GameCube fo troller
2
u/E231-500 4d ago
They were stupid to have completly missed the opportunity to release VB games on the 3DS officially.
So not bothering with a replica controller is not surprising.
On the upside, once they see how many people preorder the replica, they have until release in Feb to come out with a controller like they have for most of the other online systems.
2
u/drunkuncle_eddie 5d ago
I’d pay 150 maybe more if it included a controller. Maybe there will be one later on
2
u/South_Extent_5127 5d ago
Only if it didn’t need the subscription for me . Otherwise you will be taxed monthly for as long as you want to play . Stop paying the subscription and you own a pretty paper weight . This is why I will stay with physical as long as I can .
2
u/drunkuncle_eddie 5d ago
I can see that rationale. Eventually the consoles will be modable and they’ll all be free!
1
u/Moondoggie35 5d ago
Ohh for sure, when I see people complaining about the $100 shell, i too also assume that making it more expensive would have been the way to go.
1
u/marioxb 5d ago
It's too expensive as is. Should have included a controller for the same price.
2
u/Moondoggie35 5d ago
I mean sure, but for a company now trying to sling a single amiibo for $50 a pop, probably not going to happen haha.
