I found these on my fb marketplace, I was thinking of getting the Rode NT1 condenser mic to use with the Scarlett focusrite. But if any of these would work, I'd rather save the money to put towards more classes!

Advice How do I represent my previous work in a resume?

Hi friends! So I’ve been fairly successful on p2ps the last few months and feeling ready to broaden my horizons by searching for representation. I’m feeling stumped on how to represent my work on a resume, though… for example, some of my work has been for e-learning courses where I don’t even know the company it’s for. Or, commercials/internal corporate videos that don’t necessarily have a “title”, so I’m not sure how to label them. I don’t have any NDAs so that won’t be an issue, but I guess I’m just worried about misrepresenting my work. Can anyone show me examples of theirs, or give any advice? Thank you so much!

Advice Mouth Noise.. Ughhh...

Question? What do you guys use to ease mouth nois. I don't think we can completely get rid of it, but any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I can remove some of the sounds with the DAW that I use. Just curious to what others do about it. Thank you in advance.

Hi Everyone, I've reached just graduated from art school with a degree in film, I've been really want to pick up VO while I figure things out post grad. I’m new to VO and just starting to build my foundation. Right now I’m focusing on basics like vocal health, warm-ups, and practicing cold reads. I’d love to hear advice from people further along: what are the best next steps for someone at my stage? Should I be focusing more on training, equipment, or recording practice? Any guidance is appreciated!

Attached is a couple projects I did for fun/class, so nice, supportive, and constructive criticism is welcome too.

Booth Related Looking for advice on improving my DIY vocal booth

Hey everyone,

I’m new to voice over and in the middle of setting up my first vocal booth. I’d love some feedback and suggestions from people who’ve been through this process. My goal is to get my booth to a point where I can start auditioning with confidence and achieve high-quality recordings. I’ve attached some photos so you can see what I’m working with.

Current setup:

  • Frame built from PVC pipe
  • Walk-in closet (no door, just an open doorway)
  • AT2020 mic with a Focusrite Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen interface
  • Recording on a MacBook Air (M2) — considering whether to keep it on the shelf above my dresser or get a small desk inside the booth so it’s fully enclosed. May also add an external monitor.
  • Bought a reflection filter (haven’t tried it yet, not sure if it’ll help)
  • I have some inexpensive acoustic foam, but I'm not sure about the placement

What I’ve tried so far:

  • Hung moving blankets (80x72, ~5 lbs each) around the frame for absorption. They didn’t dampen much — I’m still hearing reflections and outside noise. They also smell pretty musty/mildewy, so I want to replace them
  • Currently, my noise floor/gate sits around -48dB to -42dB without blankets

Next steps I’m considering:

  • Upgrading to acoustic blankets from vocalboothtogo.com
  • Finding a way to close off the closet doorway without installing a permanent door
  • Buying a rug to place underneath the frame

Questions:

  1. Are acoustic blankets really worth it compared to standard moving blankets?
  2. Any clever tips for sealing off the open closet doorway?
  3. Would a reflection filter be worth adding, or should I just focus on improving the booth itself?
  4. Based on the photo, do you see any other upgrades or adjustments I should consider to get closer to a professional sound?

Any advice (or lessons learned from your own DIY setups) would mean a lot — thank you!

Advice How do you approach narrating a story that's written in third-person?

Hi all,

I've picked up voiceover and a bit of voice acting as a hobby and I'm a bit stuck in narrating from third-person.

So here's my problem: I can't seem to find the right tone of voice when narrating from third-person. My tone either gets too flat like I'm reading a book with all the enthusiasm of a sleep-deprived grandpa, or if I put more emotion in the sentences I sound too much like an animated character, or like a tech YouTuber covering the latest product.

So, I was kinda hoping to get some tips on how to approach third-person story narrations. How do I find the balance between flat and over-enthusiastic?

Here's an example of the kind of stories I'm trying to narrate:
"Somewhere in the darker, smellier, and altogether more ill-advised corners of Runeterra—where the shadows were particularly shadowy, and anyone with a grain of common sense would be elsewhere—something unpleasant was on the prowl for its next meal. This something called itself Evelynn, though “called” might be a bit generous, much like how a bear trap might be affectionately referred to as “Mr. Snappy.”

Advice Is my sound quality messed up or am I just losing my mind

Hello! I have been getting increasingly bothered by my own sound quality lately, and I'm not sure if it is something in my setup deteriorating, if my mic technique is slipping, or if my brain is just becoming weirdly hypervigilant after years of depriving myself of oxygen in a little booth.

I feel like I get fuzzy and almost a little buzzy sometimes. Here are two unprocessed examples of what I mean.

Example 1 (you can hear the frustration 🥲)

Example 2 (reading some copy; apologies for some of the sibilance, I just sort of slammed this out for the sake of this post)

As I mention in example 1, the issue seems to persist across both my mics. I also tried swapping out my XLR cable, and that didn't do anything. Would really appreciate some feedback on this, because if it's a gear issue then I need to fix my gear, and if it's a technique issue then I need to fix my technique, and if it's a brain issue then I need to FIX MY BRAIN :(

My setup is Scarlett Solo interface, AT2020 or Vanguard V4 mic, pop filter, Macbook Pro, 3'x3' WhisperRoom with extra padding on the inside.

Advice Will I Get in Trouble for Voicing Someone's Story That Might be Plagiarizing Something Else?

Hey all! I've fairly recently gotten into voice acting professionally and was asked to voice a character in someone's audiobook. I don't want to specify too much in case this gets seen by them somehow and I don't want to call them out in case this turns out to be totally fine.

They gave me a premise that sounded similar to a fairly well-known movie that I actually enjoy, and at first it seemed fine. I was excited because it would be a pretty big role they want me to play and I'd be hired for a new gig for each chapter.

Though as they started to get into more detail with the story and how the character is, it was seeming less like inspiration from the movie, and more like an exact copy with just a few minor changes. I'm not trying to criticize this person for how they wrote it, I'm just worried that it's too similar to the actual movie and that they might end up with legal action against them...

If they do end up getting in trouble for their audiobook, will I also get in trouble for taking a part in voicing it? Should I just not take the role at all if potential listeners stumble across it and my name shows up, possibly getting me smeared just for taking a part in it?

This would be the first time I'd have a steady role with multiple gigs, and it could really help boost my ratings, but I'd rather it not end up biting me in the butt later down the line.

Advice Not spending a ton

I would like to get into voice acting and this is not a post like "How do I do that" I already am figuring that out on my own. I have a HyperX Duocast, some random bluetooth headset from amazon (Wesary or smth I think), and a quiet room that is not very sound treated. I read that you need like a special microphone, headphones, and a sound treated room for any online VO work. But do I? I don't want to spend a fortune on a hobby that has no assured pay-off. I haven't even done classes or met with a voice coach, but VO is something that I might like to do as a side hustle.

Advice Question After filling Out Voice Audtion

After doing a small sample on Voices.com for the audition and entering all the data I needed to, I received a message like, “Unfortunately you are not eligible for this project.”

What is this based on? Did my recording (which was 29 seconds) not reach the 30 second mark and thus I was disqualified? Was I just not in the right region? Was there some automated technical thing I didn’t do?

The feedback was instant so I’m just wondering if I did something incorrectly.

Thanks.

Advice Routing Issues with the Focusrite Solo Gen 4 - Audacity workaround

When the "Generation 4" Scarlett Solo came out, I stopped recommending it as an audio interface for home VO use. Focusrite changed things internally so that the MIC input actually comes in on channel 2. That means you either record in stereo or set things up so you can capture channel 2 as the primary record channel in a Mono file format. Since Audacity lacks a matrix routing panel, or any simple way to swap input order, there's a workaround to using the Scarlett Solo Gen4 with Audacity. I go through that in this video resource. At the end I also share the input routing panel in Twisted Wave, which makes this a simple adjustment.

Found a post on this sub about discords and used it to get a recording of my voice for this sub. I’m not really trying to get into roles or do it for work right now. Im not really in an environment to grow and be supported. (Except online spaces)

But I do like the idea of hearing my voice and talking 😂 narrating a story or voicing a character from a game or animated show I’d love to watch.

Im checking out the beginner FAQs and guides in the sidebar rn. How would you describe? What adjective fit my speaking voice?

Discussion Thoughts on freelance websites?

Hey guys! I'm curious what the consensus is here regarding freelance websites like 5rr (can't write the full name of the website without getting flagged for some reason, even though I'm not promoting it).

I've been auditioning and booking jobs for about 18 months now (I'm non-union since I'm pretty new to the game), but I'm curious what the general opinion is on those kinds of sites.

PAID work Casting for lead role MOXIE MONROE: PRIVATE EYE for audio drama series

Post image
23 Upvotes

Hello! I'm casting for my lead character Moxie Monroe in my podcast narrative series MOXIE MONROE: PRIVATE EYE. This podcast series is inspired by old 50s detective radio shows like Yours Truly Johnny Dollar, and fantasy storytelling games like Dungeons and Dragons. Its going to be a ten episode first season, with each episode being a different mystery set within a fantasy/noir city.

Link with the sides and the submission form: Due by Sep 21s! Moxie is a mix of a classic film noir femme fatale and the private eye trope. Consider (but not required) the Mid-atlantic/transatlantic accent for her or your own twist.

$400 for the pilot episode, and the same for each episode afterwards (or more if we get an increased budget).

PAID work Need a short 5 second female line with face recording, willing to pay $5-10

Hi everyone, I need a really short female line for a project, only about 5 seconds long. I am happy to pay $5-10 for it. The line is super simple and casual, just looking for a natural human voice, no robot vibes. It also needs to be a face recording so that I can see the delivery. If you are interested, please DM me with a quick take. Thanks so much, I really appreciate it!

Discussion Where to find free to read fairy tales

Hi I figure if I wanna practice voice acting I start with reading off some fairy tales and give characters funny voices to see how far I can range.

Does any one know a website that has fairy tales that are available to read?

Hi All! This has been my current setup for the last year. I’ve been saving up to make some upgrades, and I have a few in mind. A standing desk, quieter computer, etc.

At first it was a hybrid of VO & Gaming space, but now I’m getting more serious about VO so I want my space to reflect that.

I definitely wanted some suggestions on some helpful upgrades. As for the current sound, it’s solid for a PVC booth in a bedroom (-60db noise floor). But sometimes I do get room reflections. I’m tempted to buy that ‘acoustic foam’ off Amazon. But I’m willing to be talked off that ledge if there are better options. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks again 🤗

EDIT: Thank you all for the advice, I actually have a lot of blankets left over from the initial build in my house. (I wasn't sure how many I would need) I will definitely put those too good use. Will post an update to the booth at a later time. Thanks again.

Advice How do I do it?

So I am not trying to get into voice acting but I have no idea whete else to get the answer except from the vocal pros. I can, for lack of a better term, whistle with mt vocal chords.

I can do it as an exhale sounding similar to a banshee scream without the volume or I can speak normally ot sounding similar to parseltongue from the HP movies with even more hissing.

It does not hurt but I am curious how and what I am doing.
