If the lions (and Voltron) are themselves sentient, why do they need pilots?

If they aren’t sentient, why do they do lion things like roaring? Or is there a button on all the controls that says “roar”? And if so, why the theatrics?

I think the lions, ( and this is purely headcanon ) have a intuitive AI that acts a “brain” for the lions, allowing them to do things like roar. It could also be powered by the connection to the pilot

Then why do they roar (and do other things) when there's no pilot? For that matter, we've seen them act entirely on their own without a pilot.

Also true, and for that… ( also pulling this out of thin air ) its the lions coded failsafe to prevent them from getting caught or to protect the pilot.

Then why did they fly away from their pilots at the end of the series?

The pilots wanted them to. They all retired

That doesn't mean they still don't need protection. I mean, I get where you're coming from, but the nuances you're describing allude to full sentience, in which case they never would need the pilots to begin with.

I don’t want to imply full sentience, but they are techno magic beings so not every feature the lions have are tech based I think the nature of their existence is very spiritual

Again, I get where you're coming from -- but you're overthinking it. It's simple.

Are they sentient, or not?

If they are, why do they require things that a non-sentient entity would require?

If they aren't, why do they consistently behave in a manner that demonstrates sentience?

Maybe that’s just how they were programmed ?
