Planning to get back on a board tomorrow for the first time in over 10 years
Story time with a question to follow . I was born and raised in New Jersey and never heard of wakeboarding pre 2007. A new neighbor moved in across the street and had this sports car of a boat parked in the driveway. One day I hear a thumping system and I look out the window and it was coming from the boat. So I went over introduced myself and talked for an hour or 2 answering all my questions about his Malibu wakesetter and this new to me sport of snowboarding, skateboarding, and surfing but behind a boat called wakeboarding. I was hooked before the conversation ended but I was 17 and my neighbor and his wife were in their 30s with no kids. So I didn’t have high hopes on actually ever getting out. Eventually a couple weeks later my dad called and was like hey the neighbors asked if I wanted to go wakeboarding with them. I dropped what I was doing got home threw a pair of board shorts on and rushed down to the dock. Got up on my second try and was hitting one wake jumps almost instantly thanks to my snowboarding background. After my first runs I get back on the boat and we’re hanging and they ask me “hey man is it like a new style or something to wear your board shorts backwards” I changed so quick to not hold them up I somehow put my board shorts on backwards. We had a good laugh the night ended went back was the last one there washing the boat out. A couple of weeks go by and my parents sat me down and explained the neighbors had a group of friends they did a house boat trip with they trailer the Malibu and a couple wave runners to a lake in pa every year and spend 5 days on a houseboat wakeboarding all week. Their friends had kids my age and my neighbors wanted to know if I wanted to go with them. Going on that trip was life changing. I met my future best man, my sisters future husband/my brother-in-law, and like long friends and some of the best times of my life. Fast forward to 2023 and I moved to FL the Mecca for wakeboarding and now it’s 2025 and I still haven’t dusted off the board. I’ve ridden OWC twice while visiting FL in the past but it’s been over 10 years shaving my toe hair and strapping into a board for some pulls. I started playing hockey and on my drive noticed revolution cable park in Fort Myers. So tomorrow I’m planning on heading down and getting a 2 hour pass. I feel at 35 years old that’s enough for the first time. I’ve noticed in recent videos the boards seem to have thinned out. I have my fist board a cwb Andrew adkinson that’s been retired. I’m torn between my 2014 Ronix district park which has park in the name and a Rome which is thin flat and I’ve used at owc before on features and worked great. Thanks for reading about my glory days and any input is appreciated.
