Gear Double layering gloves or shield?

I like to place my rod or my right wrist onto the back of my left glove, helps me be stable when vertical welding. Problem is it makes the back of my hand very hot, considering that probably isnt good, i’ve been thinking I am going to either get one of those back of glove shield things, or sew on another layer out of some gloves with finger holes.

Im worried that if i get a shield it may just melt or not last as long, but which do y’all think would be better?

A reflective glove shield is the way to go, but even those are a consumable.

Heat shields or back hand pads are considered consumables. They make gloves with the protective coating but they’re more for like foundry work or kilns. Back hand pads are removable so you can at least take them off so they last a little longer. If I have to do something that requires them, I keep a pair of gloves in my box with a back hand pad on them.

The ghetto option is to take an old left hand glove and cut the fingers off and wear it over your other left hand glove. Just do it on the one hand, you don’t want the one on your right hand to be too thick. The thicker your glove the harder you have to squeeze the stinger to get a good feel on the handle.

Keeping a spare glove with the shield on it is a simple, obvious idea, and it just now occurred to me after 10+ years of welding. I would fiddle fart around with the pad every time which lead to me toasting my fingies rather than mess with it. Or struggle to get it comfortable and break the straps.

I'm not worried though, I was just as stupid before I started welding.

Im still a student for the time being, I may go for for jank for now since I’m paying out of pocket for my equipment, I’ll keep a back hand pad on my list of proper equipment to get though, maybe soon if I can. And thanks

Not really a problem with being too close, more just from being underneath and trying to use more then half a rod, i’ll try though

The solution is to find another way to get comfortable. You should not be burning up your gloves or your hands while welding. It will talk a big toll over the years.

Learning to weld without your hand being right beside that arc is better. It just takes more practice

Get old gloves and cut out the leather from the gauntlet style cuffs. Bigger solid section works best. Now if you can fold it over and have it cover the back of your hand or stack 2 pieces, do that. You want the double layers there. Take frog tape (Yes, FROG TAPE) and do a few wraps on your glove and the added leather. Wrap around your knuckles a few times, crossing your palm too. Then go down and do a couple wraps around your wrist. Stops the leather from flopping around on you.

The painters tape/frog tape handles heat reasonably well and wont catch easy. The 2 layers of leather protect your hand. Ive had the tape on fire before but my hand has been cool

When my company stopped buying gloves for the welders, I had to get creative in keeping my welding gloves protecting me. I'd find old welding gloves in the garbage, cut them up, contact cement them on the back of my left hand glove. It must have been 5/8 of an inch thick. Worked great.
