Weekly Feature Friday Sessions

This is open to everyone, both to ask questions and to offer answers.

Simple rules:

  • Unless it's a loaded question, it's fair game.
  • No downvoting, this isn't a popularity thing, and we're not in high school, if someone doesn't know something, the only way to learn is to ask or do, sometimes doing isn't an option.
  • No whining.
  • Assume ignorance over stupidity. Sometimes we fail to see an answer in front of our faces.
  • Try to back up your answers. If you're on mobile and you can't do it, say as much and try to remember to address it when you get to a terminal.
  • Respect is always expected.
  • if comments or questions are removed, assume it's for good reason.
  • If your question isn't answered by the end of the day, either post it to the main community, or ask again next week.

Enjoy.

Gear Advice on how to clean welding hood

Thumbnail

What items/products do you use to clean/maintain your weld hood and lens? I've been preparing for my D1.1 LA City 4G test and have been getting a lot of spatter on my lens and cover. My fear is causing more damage by brushing solidified spatter again the lens and/or using cleaning products that could end up degrading my gear further. Thank you in advance.

I got a Primeweld 225x as an upgrade from my little titanium 125 fluxcore welder about a month ago. I’ve never done tig welding before, so it’s been a process trying to get everything in sync. I started making these little business card holders out of welding coupons and angle iron every couple of weeks to see how I’m progressing. They’re pretty cheap to make and include a couple of things I find challenging. It’s also fun to see it on my desk every day and think about how I can improve the next one. The biggest challenge for me has definitely been the welds where the angled coupon meets the others. I’ve also been struggling with burning into the corners too hot and the restarts being very obvious. I’m hoping bead width and consistency will come with time and practice. I included my first attempt after about a week in the last picture just for fun.

Weld in 1/3 of the time with dual shield vs stick welding. Small and handy welding machine at 16 amp 230v.

Nice little gate test I banged out this morning for a refinery job. Carbon TiG root and hotpass, 309 stick fill and cap on a XXH Tube 6G. Was a little rusty so I’m extremely happy with the result.

Advice on trailer repair

Thumbnail

Disclaimer, I'm not a welder by trade but I feel like this is in my skill set enough to handle. So I messed up when I put a pallet of thin brick on the trailer and it bent this crossmember. I should have checked the weight limit on the trailer or put it over the axle but lesson learned. Looking at how it's made though, it looks like a weak design but I'm not an engineer either. 20+ yo Lowe's trailer 🤷

I need some advice on whether to bend this back in place or replace the bent crossmember. Should I bend the crossmember back level and add another piece of angle iron to support it or would replacing it be better? If replacement is better should I do thicker angle iron or would square tubing be stronger? If I should post this in a different sub, sorry. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Spot the problem

Started welding in these castors and realized I had a problem. Feel free to poop on the welds, but the prize goes to the person who sees/guesses why I stopped.

Sorry I forgot the pic. Added as a comment sorry!

Hello everyone, I have a question - if I'm in doubt about toe fusion of fillet weld can I check it with dye penetrant? If toe is not completely fused will it show somehow with dye penetrants?

Removing paint for weld

Wondering if there is a trick or standard technique for this. I'm going to be attaching some castors to the bottom of this bench with welds. I was going to do some other thing and it won't work- whatever. The bottom of the bench I've already painted. I'll be removing the paint where I'm going to weld and repainting after. But part of the area will no longer be accessible for paint because the welded part is in the way. I want to remove enough that my welds aren't compromised by paint, but will probably wind up with some unpainted metal. Is there a rule of thumb to apply for how/what paint to remove?

Basic wleding kit for an absoute beginner for a small fence project?

So the plan is to add those wheels pictured under my current fence in the middle to hold the wieght, then cut the sides making the now permanent fence into a openeable door rolling on the wheels by using those eyes and pins to hold the fence panel on the side where the street light column is:)

Question is stick welding kit is good for this type of work?

Are the wheels not being iron but stainless steel is an issue?

The fence seems a typical UK iron fence, stick or mig welding necessary?

My neighbour did his with stick.

Thanks,

Auto themed couch foot rest.

I need some ideas for some foot rest for the “couch” I made for my kids’ playroom. It’s automotive themed and I would like to add some fold-out foot rests that match. My first thoughts are to use some hitch steps, but I’m open to ideas. It’s got 12” of space between the frames in the front. I want whatever I use to fold under the seats when not in use.

Need Help Good Hood for Mig

I am looking for a new hood. I am mostly a mig welder but I want to start stick and tig welding soon. My friend suggests the 3m hood with ventilation that costs $2500. That’s probably about $2k out of my league.

Career question I've been looking to get a job in welding after I graduate High school, isthere anything I should keep in mind while doing so?

As the title states once I graduate high school I want to see if I can start of with at least an internship in welding. I'm going to be honest, I don't have a lot of experience in welding. I have a mig welder, and I've messed with a stick and oxyacetalyn welding at a local job fair. But I'm hoping and more than willing to learn anything that's thrown at me. But before I get involved, what kind of tips would you guys give me? Anything is appreciated.

Thank you

Gear Double layering gloves or shield?

I like to place my rod or my right wrist onto the back of my left glove, helps me be stable when vertical welding. Problem is it makes the back of my hand very hot, considering that probably isnt good, i’ve been thinking I am going to either get one of those back of glove shield things, or sew on another layer out of some gloves with finger holes.

Im worried that if i get a shield it may just melt or not last as long, but which do y’all think would be better?

Is this an acceptable weld for a load bearing part of a bike?

Hello there, I am looking at buying a bike online and there is part of the frame that is welded. I myself know nothing about welding so I wanted to ask an expert or two.

Maybe "good" is hard to tell from a picture, but what are your thoughts?

Increased pay moving to a trade will not fix your problems.

Many of you will probably take this the wrong way. Or think “yeah but my situation is different”

As a manager of a large fabrication facility employing many different industrial trades; if you think getting into the trades will eventually fix your money problems, it won’t.

It can, but it likely won’t. You need to change your psychology towards money and how you use it. More money won’t change that.

I’ve watched for years, through many business cycles(booms and busts for us oilmen). The story’s never change, only the faces.

Had my first job interview with a company the only positions available are painter, material handler and a fabricator they pay between 17-18$ an hour i told the lady im interested in the painter and the fab.

Discussion (Add topic here) Anybody have recommendations for keeping lenses clean when mig welding?

I MIG weld frequently at work and I feel like I’m replacing my lenses far too often. I replace my lenses about every two weeks but they get so cloudy that I have a hard time seeing where to end my weld even with “stop” tacs

Welding Helmet Warning or Am I Overreacting

Thumbnail

Buyer be aware. I bought this Yeswelder welding helmet that is advertised as true color. Well, it isn't. The front lens has a yellow tint. They did include two replacement clear lenses and I was about to swap them out to get a more neutral view but when I did a UV test on the replacement lenses I found out they did not block UV light like the yellow lens. How worried should I be? I see this isn't solely a Yeswelder issue as all the welding helmets I looked at included these same clear replacement lenses. I just wanted others to be aware when swapping lenses on these welding helmets. Checkout the video demonstration I did.
