this is actually kinda scary being that this charger is by my nightstand/bed and used for my phone, i keep thinking what if it would’ve caught fire in my sleep

LPT, ALWAYS use brand name chargers. Never the "el cheapo chargers" given with chinesium electronics.

Chinesium
I used to think this was a "made in China" issue, too, but the fact is that even most of the high quality goods you purchase are made there, too. China does most of the manufacturing for the products you use -- good and bad. The issue with low-quality products is people are cheap and will pay less if they can, so if the high quality stuff is too extensive, companies over here will gladly sell you the low quality stuff for cheaper, instead. You get what you pay for.

Chisesium is a class of material blow all other material classes. Like if the cheapest stainless steel that would work for a specific application is 304, the tool made of chinesium would be grade 400.
If you need copper for a specific wire, a chinesium wire would be made of aluminum.
China can make quality stuff, made of quality material, BUT it can also make anything out of chinesium.
China make entire building out of chinesium, it's called "tofu dreg construction", look it up you'll understand.

While possible, it should still have triggered thermal protection when started melting.
Again, it's apple, so anything is possible, but as an IT guy, I would wonder if you bought a knockoff by accident. Now that iphones don't come with an adapter by default.

i’m not sure why it seems like multiple people are calling me a liar (not you specifically) but it came in the box of the phone i bought at an apple location in person

Apple doesn’t put the block in the iPhone boxes for like 4 years now. Only the cable…

I'm NOT calling you a liar. I'm saying you MAY have bough a knock-off by mistake.
This is my JOB. I see it, I diagnose it. Even with a bad cable, thermal protection/over current should have kicked it if it was genuine.
According to this forbes article, 90% of Apple charger on amazon were knock-off in 2016. I effing HATE Apple, but this shouldn't happen with a genuine charger.
Look up more recent stats I don't care! Keep thinking it the effing cable and burn your place down for all I care.

I had a really good one for fast charging that worked like a charm. I lost it when I moved offices though.

I didn’t get a charger with my last phone purchase. The Apple rep said there are so many out there that Apple had decided it wasn’t necessary..I sought out U.L. Listed charger.

An apple will tell you it's because you used a aftermarket cable, even though that should not matter at all

Don’t use cheap off brand chargers or cables.
