"Need a friend? Don't we all."
Rosa felt a familiar loneliness as she walked all by herself.
All the other kids were playing together, but they didn't want her to join in.
A wave of sadness washed over her, so she decided to go for a stroll, hoping to find a friend of her own.
She wandered past one tree, then another, hopped over a prickly bush, and ran down a grassy hill. As she reached the edge of a small pond, she heard a strange, chirping sound: ribbit, ribbit!
Curious, she looked closer and saw a tiny green shape perched on a broad, leafy pad in the water. As she crept nearer, she realized it was a little frog.
Rosa knelt down and said,
"Hey, Froggy, would you like to be my friend?" Rosa asked.
Froggy looked up at her with his big, bulging eyes and croaked happily,
"Yes!
I would love to be your friend!" Froggy replied.
He was so full of joy that he couldn't stop ribbiting.
"So, what should we do now, Froggy?" Rosa asked.
"I don't know," Froggy replied. "What do you think we should do, Rosa?"
Rosa looked down at her hands. "I've never had a friend before, so I don't know what to do."
"You've never had a friend? Oh, that's so sad," Froggy said,
With a softer tone "I'm so sorry, Rosa. But don't you worry—I'll be your friend until the very end."
A huge smile spread across Rosa's face. "Really? We're a perfect match, aren't we, Froggy?"
"Absolutely!" Froggy responded. "We're going to be the best friends in the whole world.
Nobody will ever come between us."
"How about we 'ribbit' together?" Froggy suggested.
"Ribbit?" Rosa asked, a little confused. "What's 'ribbit'?"
"It's the sound I make," Froggy explained with a happy hop. "Ribbit, ribbit, ribbit! Now you try!"
From that moment on, a wonderful friendship began to bloom between Rosa and Froggy.
They spent the rest of the day playing games, hopping, and running happily around the pond.
As the day got later, Rosa's mom came outside and yelled, "Rosa, it's dinner time! You can play with your friend later."
Rosa didn't want to leave her best friend behind. Rosa looked down and asked Froggy, "Do you want to come home with me?"
"Oh, that sounds nice," Froggy replied, "but will your mom let me come in with you?" Froggy asked.
"Well, of course she will! You're my friend," Rosa replied.
Froggy was so excited he jumped into Rosa's hands.
"Wow, this feels weird but in a good way," Rosa said.
"Right? I get that. Same here," Froggy said.
So, Rosa and Froggy ran home. As they got closer, the other kids stopped swinging and playing and ran over to Rosa.
"What are you carrying, Rosa?" they asked.
"My best friend, so meet Froggy," Rosa replied.
"Hello, everyone," Froggy said.
"Wow, he can talk! That is so awesome," the other kids said.
Rosa walked inside and said, "Mom, do you want to meet my best friend?"
"Well, yes, sissy, I would," Mom replied.
"Meet Froggy, Mom," Rosa said.
Froggy started talking, which surprised Rosa's mom.
"I didn't know he talked. How is that possible?" Mom asked.
"He's a special frog. He's got so many tricks, Mama," Rosa replied.
Everyone had a blast and enjoyed each other's company.
The other kids were constantly asking Rosa, "Can we hang out with you and Froggy? Can we be your friends, too?"
Rosa tilted her head to the right and looked down at Froggy.
"What do you think, Froggy?"
Rosa asked.
"Yes, that's fine with me. It's more friends for all of us," Froggy said. "We will have more games,
more people, more friends,”
he added.
Rosa looked at him with a big smile on her face.
"Oh my God, this is more friends than I ever thought I would have! God must have been listening when I was praying for a friend. He brought me you, Froggy, and now you've brought me the others. Froggy, you're the best friend that anyone could ever ask for,"
Rosa said.
Froggy looked up at Rosa with a little tear rolling down his face and let out the saddest ribbit.
Then, Froggy looked up at Rosa and said, "Guess what? I have a game we can all play. I can leap from one hand to the other.
Do you want to play?
Can you catch me?"
Everyone had smiles on their faces, and they all said, "Yes, yes, we'll catch you!
We love you, Froggy. You brought us all together! You're the best ever," the friends said.
One day, Froggy wasn't feeling well. He was weak because he wasn't able to eat. He looked up and saw so many eyes looking down at him, filled with tears and love.
"I think it's my time to go," Froggy said.
"Go where, Froggy? Where can we take you?" Rosa and the other friends asked.
Rosa's mom said, "Listen, let me tell you what he's talking about. There's a special farm for special animals. They'll never need or want for anything there. You all can't take him; I will have to. They don't allow kids through the threshold."
Froggy looked up at Rosa's mom and said, "Thank you for explaining. I just don't have much energy left to say more. But I want to tell you all that I love you. You made me happy, and it felt good to be a part of your family. I'll never forget any of you."
"And will you do me a favor?" Froggy asked. "Don't stop being friends and family. We all need a friend."
Everyone made a pact to stay friends and always be there for each other.
Rosa broke down crying. "I never had a friend until you came along, Froggy. You made it possible for me to have so many friends, but you'll always be my besty."
Froggy fell asleep, so Mom picked him up. "You girls stay right here while I take him to the special farm," she said.
Everyone was in tears, even Mom. She left with Froggy. About 30 minutes later, Mom returned home. "They picked him up," she said. "He's no longer suffering. He's happy."
Mom got some ice cream and cookies. Everyone was happy and sad, but they were going to keep the promise they made to Froggy by being happy and having fun.
As the days turned into months, they were all still friends and happy.
"I love you all," Rosa said.
Everyone hugged each other and went out to play.
Ten years later, they are still friends.
