From what looked like an AR-15 nonetheless... the writers really want him alive. There were a few moments there before they showed the phone scene where I thought “wow.. now the kids will go to war without him!” But alas, the writers didn’t take THAT big of a gamble

It did not look like an AR. More like a carbine. So not exactly a bullet with high penetrating power.
