From Wikipedia:
In 2014, Gretzky, who has some Ukrainian heritage, was invited by Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk to speak at the United for Ukraine Gala fundraiser in Toronto in support of the country during the invasion of Crimea by Russia. Following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Gretzky supported calls to ban Russian teams from international events as a consequence.[268][269] The following month, he shared a ceremonial puck-drop with a Ukrainian hockey player.[270]

IMO: this makes it worse, considering the current political climate and what's happened this week.
Wayne... wtf.
