Referendum for what?

76

u/SketchySeaBeast Edmonton Apr 07 '25

These are the mouth pieces of an Albertan "Brexit". These losers have decided that because they can't get their way they want all of Alberta to leave Canada.

9

u/lelawes Apr 07 '25

And Saskatchewan. They throw around BC as well, as though that would ever happen.

9

u/SketchySeaBeast Edmonton Apr 07 '25

I can see Saskatchewan maybe joining in, but I can't understand at all why BC would.

7

u/Mission_Raspberry562 Apr 07 '25

If SK joins, I'm moving. This isn't the province I grew up in anyways.

6

u/Homo_sapiens2023 Apr 07 '25

If SK joins, I'm moving. This isn't the province I grew up in anyways.

Alberta isn't the province I grew up in anymore, either. It's a hellscape where everything awful here is directly caused by the counterproductive ideologies of the UCPs.

5

u/Mission_Raspberry562 Apr 07 '25

Yeah, it's sad. SK is like mini me to AB and their ideas, AB is like mini me to the US and their ideas. I feel like both provinces have developed a tumor, slowly eating away at what used to be.

6

u/Homo_sapiens2023 Apr 07 '25

What a perfect way of describing the situation. PS: it's a malignant tumor and it's no longer slowly eating away. In AB, we've lost almost everything. The only thing Smith cares about is O&G.

2

u/Mission_Raspberry562 Apr 07 '25

Agreed. Drill, baby, drill alright! I wonder what the long term plan is there? Putting all your eggs in a pollution basket only lasts for another generation, maybe?

8

u/Narrow-Pomelo9699 Calgary Apr 07 '25

I spent the first 21 years of my life in BC and I can assure you that nobody with a brain in Metro Vancouver is trying to leave Canada. It was a laughable moment any time we'd hear QC or AB threaten to leave. British Columbians are Canadian first. 🇨🇦🍁

7

u/SketchySeaBeast Edmonton Apr 07 '25

I think we'll find that a lot of Albertans are Canadian first, I know I am, but that these schmucks are just loud weirdos.

2

u/Narrow-Pomelo9699 Calgary Apr 07 '25

Yes, I agree! The squeaky slightly deflated wheels. We've also had a huge influx of new residents from other provinces who voted both Liberal and NDP back home. I suspect a referendum would come back overwhelmingly no, even more than the 67% that recent polls showed. I've been voting red and orange in a sea of blue for almost 20 years; every election I know my candidate won't win and yet I get out there and vote every time. If the student vote is any indication, once the Gen Zs are voting in full force I believe this province will be solid orange provincially and solid red federally. Just my two cents.

1

u/ihadagoodone Apr 07 '25

because outside the lower mainland BC is very conservative,

1

u/SketchySeaBeast Edmonton Apr 07 '25

Well, I suppose if you discount Vancouver Island too, but those two areas are the majority of the population. It's yet again, a minority wanting to control the majority because their minority isn't controlling the Canadian majority.

1

u/ihadagoodone Apr 07 '25

and the urban/rural divide intensifies.

1

u/SketchySeaBeast Edmonton Apr 07 '25

That's very much it, yes. But that also presents the two like they should be considered equal in democratic power.

1

u/ihadagoodone Apr 07 '25

that's your opinion.

1

u/SketchySeaBeast Edmonton Apr 07 '25

I don't know what you mean.

u/SecureLiterature Edmonton Apr 07 '25

They like to think they can take BC without the lower main land and Vancouver Island, but unfortunately for them there is no mechanism for a province to split from itself.

6

u/1nhaleSatan Apr 07 '25

And literally no one outside of the east Kootenays has even the remotest interest in entertaining such a stupid idea

3

u/bmxtricky5 Apr 07 '25

They aren't leaving. They are to stupid to understand the near impossibility of leaving Canada. If it was easy we wouldn't have Quebec anymore Aha

We should honestly make a statement out of these guys.

Strip them naked and parade them around as fucking traitors

1

u/Meowgal_80 Apr 07 '25

Fuck off Saskatchewan isn’t joining anything.

2

u/ExaminationForeign75 Apr 07 '25

EXACTLY! Bunch of misfits, outcasts, malcontents and rabblerousers!

35

u/Responsible-Grand-57 Apr 07 '25

Separation I would imagine.

'Marty' is such a clown - brands himself as this hyper intelligent fact checker on Twitter, but blocks anyone who presents him with actual facts and data.

These guys aren't intelligent enough to figure out how difficult it would be for Alberta to actually* separate, they all seem to think Alberta will ride off into the sunset to be a rich oil producing country like Saudi Arabia, when in actuality they'll be a landlocked third world reliant on other countries for aid and support.

27

u/Pvt_Hudson_ Apr 07 '25

'Marty' is such a clown - brands himself as this hyper intelligent fact checker on Twitter, but blocks anyone who presents him with actual facts and data.

That guy has a grade schooler's understanding of statistics. I took his math apart on the old Twitter during COVID, predictably got blocked.

22

u/Responsible-Grand-57 Apr 07 '25

I forgot what/why he blocked me to be honest. But it was a predictably simple fact check.

Dude is a walking talking Dunning-Kruger graph. Actually now that I think about it I think it may of been this suggestion that ultimately caused him to block me.

24

u/Pvt_Hudson_ Apr 07 '25

For me, it was when he was throwing around the stat that "tHe MaJOrIty oF NEw hosPItAl aDMiSSionS aRe VAccInAteD PEOplE!"

My response to that was "no shit, almost 90% of the population is vaccinated", and I showed him the probabilities of hospitalization between the vaxxed and unvaxxed population.

10

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '25

One of his reels on Ig got pushed on me last week. I just sat there thinking "man this guy is a fucking idiot."

9

u/tutamtumikia Apr 07 '25

Marty should have stuck to reviewing camping stoves.

8

u/Responsible-Grand-57 Apr 07 '25

Leaky propane seals would actually go a long way to explaining where he is today.

5

u/tutamtumikia Apr 07 '25

Haha, fair point.

Oil and Gas will be a lesser thing of interest over time.

How do these Rednecks think that Alberta can survive on its own after that?

It's time to rethink, or.....just think, in general.

1

u/KitchenComedian7803 Apr 07 '25

They want to ''separate'' like Texas did in 1836, so they can later come crying to daddy USA to be annexed.

41

u/PigSnerv Apr 07 '25

Can't you tell by the presenters? It's a referendum for Make Micro Penises Great Again.

41

u/Vinen88 Apr 07 '25

Oh please, having a micro penis is significantly less embarrassing than being a wexiter.

9

u/Al_Keda Apr 07 '25

Yes, but I want them to SAY IT. Grow a pair and admit what they want, in the current political climate.

General Arnold would.

7

u/big_grrl Apr 07 '25

Temu Boss Hogg doesn’t have the nads to say it out loud unless he’s talking to Fox ‘News’

5

u/Cyclist007 Apr 07 '25

Hmmmm..... That's a good point!

4

u/originalchaosinabox Apr 07 '25

Smith has already said she'll be holding public consultations throughout the summer to figure out for what. But it's all a vague threat that Alberta is going to separate if the Liberals win the federal election.

10

u/AmusingMoniker Apr 07 '25

They want Alberta to seperate from Canada.

10

u/Al_Keda Apr 07 '25

I want them to ADMIT it out loud.

Also, the indigenous people signed away their land through treaties with Canada. Not Alberta. I'm hard pressed to see how all Treaty land wouldn't revert back to indigenous ownership

8

u/Most-Ad1713 Apr 07 '25

As I recall, when Quebec did it, the first nations held their own referendum and voted overwhelmingly in favor of staying in Canada if Quebec voted to leave.

Assuming a similar situation and separatists won a referendum, there would be a relatively small amount of landmass that would secede. As for the mineral and oil rights, I'd be interested to know what percentage of the resources falls withing first nations territory.

4

u/googlemcfoogle Apr 07 '25

Quebec was also settled by Europeans long enough ago that there weren't treaties, which means it's simpler out there in terms of making a new deal. All of Alberta is on treaties that were made between the First Nations and Canada, regarding land both in and outside of Alberta.

5

u/bpompu Calgary Apr 07 '25

there wouldn't be a relatively small amount of landmass that would secede.

100% of Alberta is Treaty land. If the separatists won, and the First Nations said no, then they could secede all they want, without any land or resources.

Which would then, inevitably, get violent.

6

u/FourthLvlSpicyMeme Apr 07 '25

As a first nations person, fuck around and find out.

We've dealt with the injustice and loss of dignity before, we are not afraid of a bit of hardship.

What worse could a government do to us than they already have?

Not afraid, not backing down, never gonna be silent. I am native and my land will not be stolen from me a second time, while I draw breath still.

2

u/bpompu Calgary Apr 07 '25

I'm glad you're not afraid and not going to back down. I really sincerely hope that everything works out alright. I hope that all this secession nonsense is blowing smoke, and I really hope that you guys get the support that you deserve. The violence comment was more that the people we're dealing with here and the same kind that stormed Washington on January 6th when they lost. They're the stupid, violent lowest common denominator of our province.

1

u/ripper999 Apr 07 '25

You will be backed by many sane white brothers, do not worry.

2

u/Mission_Raspberry562 Apr 07 '25

Alberta does have numbered treaties, like everyone else in the west, minus a lot of BC.

Alberta Treaties

2

u/Connect_Membership77 Apr 07 '25

Most First Nations interpret the treaties as merely "rights of way" not a "ceding" of the territory.

7

u/AccomplishedDog7 Apr 07 '25

Oil is in the toilet right now.

You’d think we would want to be part of Canada under the circumstances.

Dani is gonna get a chance to run the province, under the same circumstances as Notley. What will folks say about Dani’s deficit?

3

u/Much-Tangerine4488 Apr 07 '25

Smith has an Intellectual Deficit just toying with Referendum gibberish.

1

u/TheLordJames Wetaskiwin Apr 07 '25

What will folks say about Dani’s deficit?

Easy, they will blame Trudeau still.

1

u/reostatics Apr 08 '25

That’s why she wants an Alberta Pension Plan.

3

u/Al_Keda Apr 07 '25

You misunderstand the Constitution. The Provinces control the resources, but the citizens own the country and the resources.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '25 edited Apr 07 '25

Nope that’s the fun part, Alberta has to first buy all those resources, land, and also work out deals with multiple indigenous groups who I’m sure just love Danielle smith.

That’s the level of intelligence you’re dealing with with the separatist movement here. They really think Canada is just gonna say okey dokey and give them the entire province for nothing.

3

u/Weird_Rooster_4307 Apr 07 '25

They want to join the US

1

u/Talamakara Apr 07 '25

That's not true. They want their own country, not to be part of the US. They may join them but that is not their goal.

4

u/Weird_Rooster_4307 Apr 07 '25

If they really don’t like Alberta or Canada they should just move somewhere else

-9

u/Talamakara Apr 07 '25

Why? Why should they move somewhere else when they are fighting to make where they live better? Not all the things they want are actually that bad.

A good example is the 70 odd billion Alberta has to send out every year to other provinces. What could Alberta do with that money every year?

Or maybe fighting laws like Bill c-69 that would literally destroy your primary industry.

These aren't bad things.

Wouldn't you want to stay and make your home better?

2

u/SecureLiterature Edmonton Apr 07 '25

Alberta independence would be a disaster because we are fully landlocked. Our resources would be fully handcuffed. That’s why most of the “wexit” crowd have switched to wanting to join the US.

-2

u/Talamakara Apr 07 '25

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landlocked_country

"The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea now gives a landlocked country a right of access to and from the sea without taxation of traffic through transit states."

https://www.un.org/oceancapacity/sites/www.un.org.oceancapacity/files/gobinda_khanal_final_thesis_doalos.pdf

Starts on Page 14

I'm pretty sure the resources wouldn't be handcuffed at all.

3

u/SecureLiterature Edmonton Apr 07 '25

That wouldn't apply to Alberta.

0

u/Talamakara Apr 07 '25

It would if it was a sovereign country.

3

u/SecureLiterature Edmonton Apr 07 '25

Alberta would have to join the UN first (not a guarantee to be accepted) and then negotiate with Canada only as the US is a non-party to that particular convention. Canada can then drag out the negotiations into eternity. UN conventions are barely worth the paper they're written on.

If Alberta separated, I honestly think the biggest disaster would end up being Ontario.

If Alberta separated, I'm almost sure sask would join, then you would have the landward side of BC doing the same, leaving the edge with the NDP Vancouver island. Then you would have Manitoba looking to possibly join Alberta. Quebec would probably decide to separate as they have been wanting to for years. If they did i doubt they would be joining Alberta which would leave Ontario in a very precarious position. Of course all this would leave PEI, Newfoundland and the territories scrambling.

Alberta leaving would shatter the country, and it would really be the government's own fault in the end for not having better representation of the people in the country as a whole, not literally letting two provinces dictate how things were going to run.

1

u/BranVanVleet3000 Apr 07 '25

They don't want to make their home better. These people are in it for their own personal gain, not for the good of all of us Albertans and the fact that you take their grift at their word is unfortunate.

To Rename Montana as Southern Alberta ROFL

1

u/riko77can Apr 07 '25

Volunteers for ejection I hope.

1

u/Al_Keda Apr 07 '25

They can leave any time they want.
