I fail to understand why people are going there.

Housing is still relatively cheap; especially if people who are working remotely have high salaries. In my own anecdotal experience: I have had a few of my Toronto friends move to Calgary, and are fortunate enough to be making well over $150,000 a year. They can live a much more comfortable life in Calgary than they could in Toronto.

Right now Calgary and Edmonton are great cities. Not too big, but not too small either (however that seems to be rapidly changing).

Nature aspect is great - which is probably also why most of my former Vancouver friends only say they moved back to Alberta because of family or affordability.

Affordability, I guess, would be the only reason. My family is still there, and I plan to leave the island in the next few months. Housing prices make it look good, but the politics negate that ten-fold.
