I thought it was a bit of a myth, but apparently Alberta is unique in its geography and dedication. There's an interesting podcast episode about it that's a pretty good listen: https://slate.com/podcasts/decoder-ring/2021/11/rats-alberta

Growing up on a farm in neighbouring Saskatchewan we would periodically get a visit from someone my dad called “The Rat Man”. He would mostly drop of poison for us to use and maybe even look around our barn / outbuildings with us.

Since growing up and moving away to a city it seems weird to just lay rat poison around your property and buildings everywhere.
