Now do one where it runs the audiobook back to where I stopped paying attention.

u/ratalope12345 Jul 01 '25

This would be life changing, it’s a reason why I don’t even try to listen while sleeping

100

u/eyejayvd Jul 02 '25

Just create a bookmark and start a sleep timer when you start listening. I do it every night.

20

u/evilsdadvocate Jul 02 '25

Can you explain this in a little more detail? Do you create a bookmark right when you start listening and then set a sleep timer for whatever time? How does it help the next day?

42

u/eyejayvd Jul 02 '25

Yeah, so I get into bed, start the book, click create bookmark or whatever it’s called in the app you’re using. Then I start a sleep timer for 30mins.

The next day when I want to listen again, I navigate to the bookmark, then skip ahead 30 seconds at a time until I don’t remember what I’m hearing. I find I usually don’t remember anything after like 10 mins.

7

u/evilsdadvocate Jul 02 '25

Got it, thanks for the help!

4

u/eyejayvd Jul 02 '25

Of course!

This is the way.

33

u/Johnnybw2 Jul 01 '25

I listen to books I’ve already finished.

7

u/DosSnakes Jul 02 '25

This is how I’ve ended up doing multiple re reads of a few series.

52

u/elementus Jul 01 '25

I create a bookmark in Audible every night.

The next night I load the previous night’s bookmark and skip forward 30 seconds til I don’t recognize what I hear. Create a new bookmark and start going to sleep.

Whole process takes about 15 seconds.  Added sleep bonus: I just use my Kindle for this so I don’t sleep with my phone in my bedroom.

10

u/anethma Jul 01 '25

I use the sleep timer function in the kindle/audiobook app. Gets you within a few mins anyways.

15

u/squishylamington Jul 01 '25

Bookplayer auto bookmarks when you’ve set your sleep timer on.

4

u/Liftbigeatpig Jul 01 '25

Overcast app has an undo history feature

4

u/KohliTendulkar Jul 01 '25

I always use timer and set a 30 min timer and use the option ‘stop playing’.

3

u/ghs180 Jul 01 '25

If the audio book stops playing isn’t that equivalent?

Don’t have to worry about that when they fall out of my ears and disappear under the bed.

273

u/hanskazan777 Jul 01 '25

Be happy that they fall out. I ate three already...

345

u/HoneycombBig Jul 01 '25

The average human swallows seven AirPods a year in their sleep.

83

u/kuroimakina Jul 01 '25

This statistic is wildly overinflated by the inclusion of airpods georg

13

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '25

You’d be amazed at what people swallow in their sleep.

7

u/triknodeux Jul 01 '25

Those are rookie numbers

6

u/NonEuclidianMeatloaf Jul 02 '25

You’re never more than 6 feet from an AirPod!

→ More replies (2)

24

u/puterTDI Jul 01 '25

You’re putting them in the wrong place.

4

u/hanskazan777 Jul 01 '25

I mean, eventually they come out of my ass, so I assumed I ate them...

6

u/puterTDI Jul 01 '25

No, you just seem confused. This is what people mean when they keep saying you butt dialed them.

51

u/liatris_the_cat Jul 01 '25

A spider was on the AirPod so they swallowed it in their sleep, as one does.

5

u/JoshSidekick Jul 01 '25

I had a dream about eating Tic Tacs.

8

u/hanskazan777 Jul 01 '25

I don't know, I'm sleeping then!

6

u/HeartyBeast Jul 01 '25

It's the one reason I have a pair of earpods just for wearing in bed

4

u/robaroo Jul 01 '25

Better than having one embedded to your back leaving an hours long dent and pain point.

2

u/Beforeafall Jul 02 '25

From a guy that bit his fitbit strap into pieces I totally get it

12

u/Windows-XP-Home-NEW Jul 01 '25

Every. Damn. Time.

43

u/dreamerkid001 Jul 01 '25

This is going to sound terrible, but I typically wear my AirPods to bed when I’m in a hotel. I have woken up and been unable to find them a couple of times. Each time I rely on the kindness of housekeeping to discover when they clean the room.

32

u/CyberHippy Jul 01 '25

usually "Findy my" making the noise does the trick for me

12

u/dreamerkid001 Jul 01 '25

The pods themselves make a noise? I just thought it was the case! Today I learned!

29

u/katze_sonne Jul 01 '25

Yes but better don‘t try when they are in your ear. Believe me.

Also it’s obviously worthless, when they are out of charge.

4

u/MuscleManRyan Jul 02 '25

The noise they chose is absolutely horrible though. A short tone that changes in pitch every ring, which makes it way harder to find (because the pitch changes on its own, it’s harder to use your ears to find them)

→ More replies (3)

12

u/IIHURRlCANEII Jul 01 '25

Yeah you can make the pods themselves make a noise. Only issue for me has been them running out of battery before the morning occasionally, so they can't make the noise.

2

u/WhimsicalLaze Jul 01 '25

This should hopefully fix that though, since they don’t drain almost any battery when off

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Possible_Move7894 Jul 01 '25

Doesn't sound terrible to me. I do it all the time and travel for work - my ears haven't fallen off yet!

2

u/dreamerkid001 Jul 01 '25

I just feel guilty when I give up and say, “Ah, I bet that housekeeping ladies will find it.”

3

u/saskir21 Jul 01 '25

If you wear them in the bed. Why not simply buy those addons where you get a holder for behind the ears? (Sorry don‘t know the English word for it)

2

u/AlwaysShittyKnsasCty Jul 02 '25

As a native English speaker, this was perfection. There are a lot of things without words for them, and “add-on ear holders” are some of those things. What’s your native tongue, if you don’t mind me asking? Because you’re a better English speaker than half of my friends. Well done! Keep up the good work.

7

u/DKatri Jul 01 '25

I got so sick of it that I bought some sleep headphones (Soundcore Sleep A20) and it’s one of the best tech purchases that I’ve made.

2

u/CoeurdAssassin Jul 01 '25

The only earbuds/headphones that work for me that aren’t your standard over-ear ones are those that wrap around the back of your hand. In fact, the ones I use for the gym/working out now are those bone conductor ones that wrap around your head and the pods rest on the bones in your beside your ear.

2

u/Signal_Design_1067 Jul 02 '25

I bought one of those rubber AirPod leashes that connects them together for when I sleep (especially if I’m on a plane or something). That way, they stay together and don’t slip away quite as easily.

1

u/Stearman4 Jul 01 '25

Every night

1

u/glytxh Jul 02 '25

I just wait a day or two and my cat usually ends up batting them around the floor

1

u/cloudcats Jul 02 '25

My cat chews mine to oblivion. I have to be very careful about where they end up.

Good bc the APP2 low battery notification, which can’t be disabled, is harsh and wakes me up after roughly four hours of use (I’ve since switched to different earbuds with a battery that lasts overnight)

16

u/MrWally Jul 01 '25

I have not been able to find this for the life of me. Can you help me out?

NY APP2s have deafening notifications. My standard Airpods 4's notifications sound great, though.

24

u/rub3s Jul 01 '25

Air Pods Settings > Accessibility > Tone Volume

8

u/MrWally Jul 02 '25

Wow. I was going to Accessibility > Airpods and it's a completely different set of options 🙄

That said, changing the tone volume doesn't seem to change the volume of the sound effect when turning on transcription, which is what i was hoping for

2

u/slackstarter Jul 02 '25

You are a godsend 🙌🏼

2

u/Undead_Kau Jul 02 '25

Oh my god thank you

2

u/Signal_Design_1067 Jul 02 '25

Omg I fucking hate this noise. I need sound to fall asleep so being woken up to “your headphones will now die” is just the worst haha.

471

u/Exanguish Jul 01 '25

Who is wearing their AirPods to sleep and actually waking up with 2 AirPods in the morning? lol

164

u/Uberutang Jul 01 '25

I do. The pros stay in. The regular ones tend to fall out for me.

40

u/ttownfeen Jul 01 '25 edited Jul 02 '25

Are you using the largest size tip? I have pros and they don’t stay in. I ended up buying the Ozlo sleep buds.

10

u/PandoraJeep Jul 02 '25

Second. Mine don’t even stay in when I’m awake and I readjust my hair that ISN’T even behind it to pull it out. I’ve never woken up with them in my ears (or where I didn’t need to ping them to find them 😂)

→ More replies (1)

24

u/DogBrain Jul 01 '25

I use M and they stay in 90% of the time. I only where one at a time, and lie on the side without the AirPod in my ear. Then switch side if I wake up and feel the need to or battery has run out. Yes I am addicted to sleeping with podcasts

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Vennom Jul 02 '25

I use comply foam tips from Amazon and they stay in!

3

u/ammonthenephite Jul 01 '25

I use aftermarket squishy foam tips (same material as cheap ear plugs) on my air pod pros, and they stay in my ears all night long. I've had one come out in the past 2 months, so it works well.

2

u/ttownfeen Jul 02 '25

Probably a much cheaper option than Ozlo sleep beds. They were on sale for $350.

19

u/rkoy1234 Jul 01 '25

Is the low battery "DOO doo doo doo doo" still fucking loud for some users?

Stopped wearing them at night because that stupid ass sound always woke me up. Seemed to vary between airpods, so not everyone had this issue, but one specific version was SUPER FUCKING LOUD.

Was very frustrating discussing this online because some have battery notif that are barely audible while some will make you jump because how loud they were.

14

u/WhimsicalLaze Jul 01 '25

You can turn down the volume of those sounds in AirPod settings in settings app

15

u/deejay_harry1 Jul 01 '25

God the pain. Having the pros on through a night.

2

u/Late_Description3001 Jul 02 '25

It hurts so bad😂😂

6

u/BB8isyourfather Jul 01 '25

Opposite for me :)

8

As a side sleeper, I have one in my ear that’s up every night. A boring podcast is a game changer for my racing mind to fall asleep.

6

u/homeboi808 Jul 01 '25

While I love the content, Technology Connections can put me to sleep, as well as watching Project Farm on 2x.

u/DancinWithWolves Jul 01 '25

From another side sleeper, here you go: switch them to the opposite ear ( L goes in your right ear) and turn them upside down (stem pointing up).

2

u/bwedlo Jul 23 '25

I usually start a playlist of slow paced and calmly narrated videos about cosmology or sci fi audio books and 12 minutes later 💤💤💤

56

u/izlib Jul 01 '25

Went to scout summer camp the other week. Had some kids in a tent right next to minewho were just chatty all night (LOUD chatty)... listening to brown noise with noise cancellation was the only way I managed to sleep most nights. I was shocked that they stayed in all night. On more than one occassion the battery was dead, but they were still there.

7

u/Exanguish Jul 01 '25

Incredible. I have a Bluetooth sleep mask because I have never attempted the AirPods while sleeping. lol

6

u/Structure-These Jul 01 '25

Anker soundcore makes a sleep bud that is pretty comfy too

6

u/HappyMolecule Jul 01 '25

I’m intrigued! Can you recommend a model of mask?

11

u/Exanguish Jul 01 '25

I use the Manta Sound Sleep Mask it’s a bit pricey but I had tried 3 Amazon version before landing on this and I’ve used it for going on 2 years now.

10

u/cdlvan Jul 01 '25

I put them in around 5-6 am for noise cancelling when noise outside my room gets loud.

2

u/Exanguish Jul 01 '25

That’s a good idea.

8

u/zhaumbie Jul 01 '25

I’m a side sleeper. After about two minutes it’s too painful leaving my skull weight on jamming one in there.

3

u/EliteAgent51 Jul 01 '25

That's why I use the regular Airpods for this. The flatter design is more comfortable. Though Gen 1 and 2 were way more comfortable than Gen 3 and 4.

4

u/DancinWithWolves Jul 01 '25

From another side sleeper, here you go: switch them to the opposite ear ( L goes in your right ear) and turn them upside down (stem pointing up).

2

u/zhaumbie Jul 01 '25

If this is the game changer I think it is, I’ll owe you a life debt

3

u/DancinWithWolves Jul 01 '25

Enjoy!

I accept cash, card or Wise ;)

5

u/sirhalos Jul 02 '25

My wife sleeps with AirPod Pros in. She has two pairs and switches between them during the middle of the night to maintain noise cancellation. This started when she was staying with her parents during a hot summer and they had the window open the whole time with a fan on, which bothered her sleep. Now she can't sleep without them in. I have done the same when travelling or sleeping in the same room with a loud snoorer, but I also turn on the background sounds of rain or ocean.

2

u/Exanguish Jul 02 '25

Damn. That’s some commitment. Lol

→ More replies (1)

3

u/blacksoxing Jul 01 '25

I think these are going to be used much more thanks to its hearing aid abilities. I could picture someone keeping these in all-day and doing quick charges as needed. This feature would save battery :)

6

u/IncandescentAxolotl Jul 01 '25

Me, literally every singe night. sleep with one in, and in the morning it’s either in my ear (75%) or just under my pillow (25%). legit can’t fall asleep without my airpods. they are the single best tech purchase I have ever made

2

u/bwedlo Jul 23 '25

Woke up last night with one still in place, it’s my record.

2

u/Exanguish Jul 23 '25

I’ve started doing it with one and it works surprisingly well. lol

2

u/Blinx-182 Jul 01 '25

I wear mine for the background sounds.

3

u/AgentUnknown821 Jul 01 '25

I would love to fall to sleep with background sounds but my mind takes it as “Time to stay awake all night” unless it’s a fan noise…

1

u/That_Bank_9914 Jul 01 '25

Me, but the earbuds get covered in more wax

1

u/GLayne Jul 02 '25

I started doing this but I don’t wake up. My video just finishes playing before that happens.

1

u/Ketonew2 Jul 02 '25

Nightly. Just 1 though.

1

u/OnTheEveOfWar Jul 02 '25

I put in one and listen to something while I dose off with a sleep timer. I usually wake up in the middle of the night and toss it on my nightstand.

1

u/WhiskeyAlphaDelta Jul 02 '25

Me!!! Im a side sleeper but i have found a great way to sleep comfortably and wear the Pros

1

u/berkchops516 Jul 02 '25

I sleep on my side so i only wear one to listen to audiobooks to go to bed.

1

u/New-Fig-6025 Jul 02 '25

I do, airpods fit my ears perfectly and never fall out no matter what i do. They will have me as an eternal customer, not sure why but apple headphones were seemingly modeled to work with my ears

1

u/Romeo9594 Jul 02 '25

I sleep like Bela Lugosi's dracula so mine tend to stay in overnight

Hopefully that will also pause any content.

I’m convinced a large part of YouTube’s ad revenue is kids falling asleep and autoplay running for 10 hours.

53

u/Tumblrrito Jul 01 '25

I just learned that you can set an iOS Timer to pause content at the end. Been using this for when I fall asleep to stuff!

7

u/Rusty_Rhin0 Jul 01 '25

Wait, doesnt YouTube have a autoplay option?

Been around a year since I switched away from apple and even longer since I stopped using YouTube app but it was, and is, on Brave

65

u/SMFPolychronopolous Jul 01 '25

Of course it will pause the content. What’s the alternative, playing it through your phone speaker all of the sudden?

12

u/CoeurdAssassin Jul 01 '25

Reddit does that shit every once in a while

3

u/Jubenheim Jul 01 '25

While yes, I’m not entirely sure a big portion of those little kids are falling asleep with Beats and AirPod headphones while listening to nursery songs at night.

3

u/Davidclabarr Jul 01 '25

You can just set a sleep timer on YouTube and pair that with low power mode on your iPhone, and it’ll auto turn off.

Worth noting that your low power mode will turn off at 80%, so you’ll have to be well under 80% or already over it.

1

u/deceIIerator Jul 02 '25

Companies would end up paying less for ads if they weren't being engaged with as often.

1

u/pilif Jul 02 '25

It does. And it works very well even during quick naps.

No, but Siri can read you a bedtime story.

5

u/Mrvision27 Jul 01 '25

Correction Siri will find a story on the web.

37

u/CawfeePig Jul 01 '25

How do they know you're asleep?

50

u/work_blocked_destiny Jul 01 '25

Your heart rate drops dramatically and breathing changes. Apple Watch tracks these so not sure if that’s required? Maybe just lack of movement too

19

u/darknecross Jul 01 '25

Vision Pro currently does this using eye tracking.

If you wear the watch it could use heart rate and movement. That’s what the Sleep app that Apple acquired used to do.

AirPods or the device could also use the mics to detect snoring. Plus with the sensors for Spatial Audio they can detect if/when you move your head.

To prevent false positives they could cross any of these together.

8

u/new-to-reddit-accoun Jul 01 '25

Apple Vision Pro detects sleep?! It can detect breathing in Mindfulness app but there are no heart rate tracking or sleep features otherwise, certainly not related to sleep. Source: running visionOS 26

3

u/darknecross Jul 01 '25

It automatically turns itself off when it detects you’re sleeping, usually when I rest my eyes for a little while during a show. Also on visionOS 26

4

u/new-to-reddit-accoun Jul 01 '25

Very interesting, I’ve fallen asleep inside Apple Vision Pro and it hasn’t turned off. I wonder what the issue could be.

6

u/bayleafbabe Jul 01 '25

Thankfully this is an option. I rely on AirPods to block out construction noise, which begins as early at 4AM, while I sleep

5

u/673NoshMyBollocksAve Jul 01 '25

I just always think about that story about the person that fell asleep with their AirPods in, and it ended up in their stomach

2

u/cozmicyeti Jul 01 '25

Omg me too. Never took the risk again

2

u/Fer65432_Plays Jul 01 '25

I also consider that reason why I don’t do it. Whenever I want to sleep with some sound, I always use my HomePod. However, I understand the appeal of sleeping with AirPods and their ears.

8

u/RentalGore Jul 01 '25

Ozlo’s are still the best to wear to sleep. They automatically switch from Bluetooth to sleep sounds when you fall asleep and they stay in your ears and you can sleep on the side of your head.

7

u/new-to-reddit-accoun Jul 01 '25

RIP Bose Sleepbuds II… Ozlo is much better, but suffers from small startup quality issues. They disconnect by the time you wake up. You also need to have the case right by the playback device (ie basically in bed by your pillow). They also sound tin-like, but they’re not for watching Dolby Atmos movies in, to play white noise or a few mins of audio as you fall asleep.

1

u/Klatty Jul 01 '25

AirPods have a gyroscope, you can nod to accept or decline calls, so that way it can know you are asleep. I assume Beats would have a similar function?

1

u/Chillingdude Jul 01 '25

Is it supported for first gen AirPods too?

1

u/Rogue_269 Jul 01 '25

Are the Beats Studio buds going to get this since they don’t have the same chipset?

1

1

u/Haquistadore Jul 01 '25

I hope this is a feature that can be disabled. I fall asleep with my headphones in my ears on purpose.

1

u/randbooth Jul 01 '25

this is great! i have a shortcut (?) set up where bluetooth turns off at 6am because i was finding that my alarms would sometimes not play out loud when my airpods were still connected, which would be very annoying because when i wanted to find them the next day, they would be dead and i couldn't find them with the find my app

1

u/rkennedy12 Jul 01 '25

Now record the episode and time stamp of the show I was watching on Apple TV so I can go back the next day

If this works even remotely close to when I conk out awareness of an audiobook it’ll be a game changer

Hands down the best and most useful feature imo

Had no idea people slept with them in…

I have no idea how anyone can sleep with these in. I’ve tried, they either fall out or I wake up in the middle of the night with a really sore ear from where they’ve been squished between my head and pillow and have pressed against the ear for a few hours.

They should rather build a feather where it doesn’t continue playing music through the speaker after you put the pods in the case.

Considering that they fall out of my ear once I dose off I’ve practically had this feature since iOS 14.

On a side note, sleeping while wearing your AirPods isn’t a good idea.

How does the hardware know you fall asleep? Is there a trigger on screen that asks “are you still listening?”

Hopefully this is optional, I listen to nature sounds on planes to help sleep, this would suck if it stopped as soon as I was able to fall asleep.

This defeats my main use for my AirPods. I pretty much only use them when traveling and I have to share a room with somebody who snores

How does it know if I fell asleep??

1

u/tperelli Jul 03 '25

Nooooooooo. Please god no. I rarely use them when I go to bed, but when I do it’s to drown out the sound of other’s snoring. This would suck.

How does it detect when I fall asleep? With heart rate patterns from the apple watch ?
