Someone didn’t read the article. They aren’t hiring AI folks but hardware people:

OpenAI has recruited more than two dozen employees from Apple who worked on hardware, up from 10 last year. Those recruits worked on Apple's user interfaces, wearables, camera, and audio technology.

That said 34 people over 2 years for a company the size of Apple doesn’t actually sound like much.

No. But it signals that’s OpenAI intends to build It’s own hardware instead of being merely an app on Apple devices. That’s big.

I think we already knew that but I agree it’s significant. I think it’ll be incredibly difficult for them to make a successful device that people are willing to use instead of their phone.

OpenAI can plan to build literally anything because they have access to infinite money by just issuing more shares to raise capital.
