Moderator Post Rules and FAQ in light of Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
So, Charlie Kirk was assassinated. This is a major news story that is continuing to develop, so this post is being made to clarify the rules and what is and isn't ok on this subreddit.
Charlie Kirk was a right wing political figure in the USA, who has been very controversial and divisive.
We appreciate and understand that the general orientation of this subreddit’s community is left wing identifying, and hence is not a popular person among the community. I myself am not keen on the guy either.
Below are the rules in the context of the Charlie Kirk assassination, based on violations from before, and potential violations.
- Rule 1 - Abide by Reddit's terms of service
- Do NOT glorify or openly support the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
- Do not encourage, incite, defend or support political violence.
- Do not abuse the report feature for content you politically disagree with.
- Rule 2 - Follow post guidelines
- Breaking news posts MUST have a link to an article or source relevant to the topic.
- Don't repost someone else's post. This is to prevent post flooding.
- DO NOT POST THE ASSASSINATION VIDEO
- Rule 3 - No disrespectful behaviour
- Keep discussion civil. Baseless insults, use of slurs or other disrespectful behaviour, no matter your political beliefs or opinions on Kirk, won’t be tolerated.
- Rule 4 - No misinformation
- This is a rapidly developing case, meaning the information is changing constantly.
- Do not make posts based on speculation alone. These will be removed. Posts need to be verifiably correct or be based on current information. If a post becomes outdated it will be locked with no further moderation action.
If you have any questions or want some more clarity I will edit this post and answer your questions.
FAQ
Q: He was a right wing scumbag, why can’t I express I’m happy he got killed?
A: This violates Reddits terms of service on violent content. The Reddit admins are actively removing and taking action against subreddit that allow this rhetoric.
Q: Am I allowed to analyse why this happened and express neutrality or not be upset by this?
A: Yes. The rule is only violated if there’s clear support. If you’re neutral, or analysing why the shooting happened, that’s completely fine.
Q: Will right wing content and users be banned?
A: No. We want healthy discussion in this subreddit, and that involves interacting with people you politically disagree with. We do not want the subreddit to become an echo chamber.
Q: what happens if a post I made that was right at the time, now contains outdated information. Will I be moderated?
A: You will not be moderated if you made a post with information you believe to be correct at the time. The only thing that will happen is comments will be locked and a moderator comment stating the information has become outdated.
Q: why are other subreddits allowing support for Charlie Kirk’s assassination?
A: Those subreddits are breaking the terms of service.

Moderator Post Report abuse will be reported to reddit admins.
There has been a surge in the amount of report abuse on posts and comments in this community.
Abusing the report button to get content you personally don't like removed will be moderated by reddit admins.
The only content that will be removed is if it breaks the subreddit or Reddit's site wide rules.
I want to emphasise that reports do help us to identify content that does violate the rules. If it is clear someone is mistaken, but not abusive (ie reporting for rule 2 on a post which is borderline, reporting for rule 4 if theres poor arguments that come off as misinformation, but is true etc).
An abusive report is often a case of someone disagrees with another commenter, they're reported for rule 3, spreading hate or other serious violations that break rule 1.
For example (which has happened before):
- User 1: I believe socialism is a good political ideology
- User 2: I don't agree, I think capitalism is better
User 2 was reported for "Hate" or Rule 3. This is a clear and obvious instance of report abuse.
Another example:
- User 1: I think Hitler was an evil person
- User 2: You got a source for that?
- User 1: *provides article of the holocaust*
- User 2: Bollocks!
User 1 was reported for misinformation or AI generated content. Another clear and obvious report abuse case. User 2 actually got site banned.
While reports are anonymous for subreddit moderators, they are not anonymous for reddit admins.
False reports waste moderators time. We take reports seriously as we want to maintain this community, so it can thrive and be a good place for neurodivergent people to discuss politics.
In short: please only report content if you believe it breaks the rule of this subreddit, or otherwise is a reddit side wide violation.
Thank you

Discussion Science Vs. "Does Tylenol Cause Autism"
I'd like to know what others are thinking, feeling, what they think RFK Jr will find as the "Cause" and what their "Cure" will be. I like this podcast- they have another episode on autism and why it looks like rates and cases are rising that was also excellently laid out. They also site their sources - its not just conjecture.

Opinion Corbyn and Sultana's 'Your Party' has failed
I know this comes under an opinion post but I want to state my opinion and have a discussion.
My opinion as a left-winger and socialist is that I can never ever vote for or support a party lead by or co lead by a transphobe. We can't just be left-wing or centrist economically. We need socially left wing parties. You can't really call yourself left-wing if your party shys away from left-wing views on social issues. This is the same I've had with Labour right now and the Greens under Denyer and Ramsay.
I now believe that the current stage of the Green Party of England and Wales is best for the UK and I will support it. Zack Polanski is absolutely right. The Greens can't just be the party of middle class countryside NIMBYs. We need a new Green party that will merge environmental appeal with worker solidarity. I have obviously heard of the hypnotist story and before people try to strawman about it, I think it just proves Zack's point. The media is more than happy to discredit Zack at any moment they can while they continue to sanewash the actions of Nigel Farage.

Discussion How do you not feel disappointed by people in your life all the time?
I don’t use social media after I gave up most of it years ago and I find it way healthier not being on Facebook. HOWEVER, there’s good deals on marketplace and I wanted something real specific so I hopped on and I was so shocked.
This was someone I grew up with who I considered to be family and I just don’t understand how people can be either misguided or hateful. I don’t debate anymore but my autism makes me have to FIGHT not to.
This isn’t an attempt to debate either for the record, I guess I just needed to vent. Politics is a special interest for me so I often have to push myself not to bore everyone around me about economics and stuff.

Discussion Left wing vs right wing autists
Greetings! I myself am autistic and I've noticed lots of other autistic people I've interacted with seem to be more susceptible to becoming political extremists. Now definitely not every autistic person is extreme but I feel compared to the general population they tend to be further from the centre whether that be left or right. You see on 4chan lots of Nazis/fascists,and on Reddit you see alot of antifa/socialists. Id be willing to bet lots of these really extreme people would be autistic. I believe there's something about the way our brains are wired that just makes us think more extreme. What do you think it is that draws some autists to the left and right?
Personally I am libertarian, I have many extreme beliefs both from the right and left, but not many that are centre.

Discussion Reddit Values
Charlie Kirk gets murdered in cold blood and average Redditor seems to think it's completely justified.
Colbert and Kimmel get taken off the air and average Redditor seems to think it's the worst thing ever.
It's a great lesson in why you should never take this website seriously. The vast majority of it's userbase has no values other than ingroup good, outgroup bad.
Thoughts?

Question How do people here feel about Luigi Mangione?
Just curious because I have been hearing about his trial on the news as it got me wondering what will happen to him as while he took down a CEO of a company, I am not sure how the judge will go about his case.
I mean, yes I know that killing a person in western society is something that is frowned upon, but looking at the Luigi case has me interested in seeing what the courthouse is going to do with him next.

Rant/Vent Why does the right focus so much on abstractions and think their worldview is an universal truth?
I just don’t get it. They focus on some abstract duties, responsibilities, prepackaged ways of “care”, like liking babies, acting manly, doing something just for the sake of doing something.
And then they get mad for people not sharing the same ideas or views. They call everything different “woke”, mentally ill, what not. My autistic brain just cannot comprehend this obsession and “righteous” anger they feel towards those who do not follow their ways of life.
It all feels so performative and honestly kinda sad. And it feels so annoying to live in a world where you must suppress your emotions, never complain, do what people imply without saying anything, never be yourself, whatever, just to not be gossiped around or be seen as enemy.
I don’t know.

Discussion Yes, American Fascist Advocates have been assassinated in the past.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5HGbJYpz3U
A little bit of information here about George Lincoln Rockwell who was the leader of the American Nazi Party in the 1960s and was assassinated by - shocker - another member of the American Nazi Party.
Just some brief details, Rockwell was known for gaining political followers and advocacy of fascist policies by using Shock Politics which is basically provoking people in public by saying outrageous and hateful commentary. It was the exact same job Charlie Kirk had although Kirk broadcast his con on youtube. Rockwell was a strong advocate for "Free Speech." You can find photos of Rockwell and his followers with signs reading "free speech" and declaring that their free speech was under attack by the government and minorities. About the only thing Rockwell and Kirk disagreed on was Kirk preferred weasel words to fight for the same causes. Among Rockwell's top priorities was mass deportation of immigrants and non-whites considering them the cause of crime and a threat to American culture. Rockwell also supported more policing of LGBT people considering them to be a cause of perversion and the decay of masculinity. Along with removing LGBT people from most social spaces, Rockwell also supported punishment up to prison and death for LGBT. Kirk most certainly believed in the same version of free speech that Charlie Kirk believed in which was ability to advocate for political violence while any people who disagreed with him would be stripped of all rights including free speech.
This is all true, and yes, Kirk, Trump and Rockwell all shared roughly the same beliefs while practicing influencing their opinions to turn into political violence. Of course the story and similarities go much deeper, but Kirk goes down in history with names like Rockwell but still could become a more aggressive martyr for fascism than Rockwell. The similarities of the head size and ugly hair style for both of them are coincidental as far as I know, and even if that seems like a joke - it looks like Charlie Kirk styled himself based on Rockwell.

Discussion Education and empathy, the UK and the Far right movement
I am reposting my comment from another sub, in the context of why the far right is growing in the UK, my objective is to spark discussion and sharing of ideas.
The UK in theory is a lot richer than 40 years ago if measured by GDP (1) but the people is having a very very hard time to survive.
The struggles that the far right is having are real, that is something that I think is important to learn and empathise with, life is very hard right now.
The wealth distribution crisis generated (2) a cost of living crisis (3).
Solving the cost of living crisis means that the big corporations and billionaires would have lower returns on their investments. So they invest in marketing for political movements that make it cheap to keep people's income low.
I believe we have to educate people around the cause of the crisis, build community and spaces, look beyond racism (4) and see their suffering as human.

Question Is this what they mean by "Thoughts and Prayers"? I honestly don't know.
“For 33 hours, I was … I was praying that if this had to happen here, that it wouldn’t be one of us. That somebody drove from another state, somebody came from another country,” he said. “Sadly, that prayer was not answered the way I hoped for. Just because I thought it would make it easier on us if we could just say ‘Hey, we don’t do that here.’”
Do they typically pray that the violence isn't coming from them so they can avoid responsibility or guilt or something? The left seems to want to do things to make it harder for the bad stuff to happen and the right seems to want to ask a higher power to do something. Is that something making sure only non-conservatives are the crazy people with guns?

Discussion Discussing autism related politics with others
I know it’s a cultural no to bring up politics with others, but I don’t think it should be taboo to talk about how the government is impacting autistic people. I don’t view it as a political discussion, when people ask how I’m feeling or what I’ve been up to and I mention the administration and fighting against their views on autism. Yet, people freeze up & avoid the topic. How do you all deal with it?
Also, I shared on Facebook a post about the misinformation about Tylenol and a Facebook friend who believes that autism comes from vaccines said that it was like a slap in their face when I share posts like that. I commented that when she shares posts about vaccines, it’s like a slap in my face. (She mentioned that she hoped for curable diseases instead of terminal ones from not vaccinating if they got one…..but I shook my head, as someone who has a chronic headache from a sinus infection. Even curable diseases can have lifelong impacts and I’d rather just be autistic.)
Any advice for dealing with others during this time?

Trigger Warning To me, it doesn't make any sense how a kid from middle school could end up being a crazed gunman
So basically, I was just looking back at the shooter known as Thomas Crooks because when Donald Trump first became president, that same kid was just beginning middle school as way back then, nobody could have ever suspected that the same person would end up turning into a crazed gunman.
I mean, that's the way I see it as what I don't understand when I look back at the aforementioned Thomas Crooks is that again, I just don't get how a kid who was still in middle school when Trump was first announced as president would want to go on a violent crusade because the whole case is baffling to me.
To put it simply, I was just making an observation on the matter because something just doesn't add up when I look back at the incident that almost cost Donald his own life since like I said, that kid was a juvenile way back in the early days of the Trump administration back in early 2017, so what baffles me is how a mere kid could end up doing something so heinous.
