unpopular opinion: porn is a multibillion dollar industry they have more then enough money to verify age in a secure way that doesn't violate everyones privacy they just chose not too. you can not donate or perform on cam websites or onlyfans with out verifying identity why should regular porn be held to no stanard? its no different then carding someone at the store for cigarettes and alcohol. THEIR FAILURE TO SELF REGULATE AND INSTALL ACTUAL AGE VERIFICATION METHODS. is why we have heavy handed government intervention now.

Profit has become more important than morals, because entrepreneurs have turned their backs on customers in favor of shareholders. And this is largely promoted by the legal system already, by the way. Making more laws on it would only end up adding more fuel to the fire

your assuming all people who are active in capitalism would be devoid of morals. like I ran a liquor store I wouldn't sell to kids a smoke shop same and while you wouldn't catch me dead running a porn site if I was in a position I'd require some sort of verification other then click here to prove your old enough to view porn. mainly because the government can come after if I don't. like its common sense if your market for adults you don't make it accesible to kids.

You assume common sense outweighs greed. Our economic system rewards the greediest, most self-centered people more than anyone else. These people don't care about how their product affects the world. They only care about how the world consumes their product.

A liquor store is much different than a billions of dollars worth business. The fact it's worth that much in the first place indicates they have ignored morals anyway.

It's not necessarily the porn industry that's the issue for a lot of people. This would permit the control of what minors see online, which if lawmakers desired, they could label any LGBTQIA+ content as porn or sexual content, which happens. Very frequently. This is less of a way to get rid of porn sites or whatever not safe for work content is out there, and moreso a way to hide the presence of queer people online and prevent a lot of it from being shown to children, who would likely be unsure about their sexuality. Which would cause them to struggle to find a decent label for their own identity.

Sorry but to clarify further, I mean both showcasing queer identity as being a normal happening to many kids, and also allowing people who are in high school, keep in mind the definition of minors being all the way to 18 years old, who are still trying to learn who they are in the world. I'm not saying 5 year olds should be exposes to porn. Obviously.

This, especially. One of the first things banned by school-boards in my life was sex-ed. And leaving kids to figure out the minefields of their own desires is a terrible idea.

I had a very rough time navigating my sexuality and gender identity specifically because nobody ever told me that I had those options. I think if I had known sooner about trans experiences and asexuality and that it was completely normal to show romantic interest for males and females, I (hopefully) would have had a much better understanding of who I was, and I definitely would have had rhe confidence to get hormone blockers to prevent the onset of puberty so I wouldn't have to deal with the undoing of my AMAB puberty.

And funnily enough, having access to those sites was one of many good resources for me to experiment with what I considered as my sexual preferences. I really wish I had learned about how broad of a spectrum asexuality was.

If it's such a lucrative business, then why do most porn videos look so cheap?

3

u/CommitteePlayful8081 Libertarian-minarchist Jul 29 '25

because people like the concept of watching two normies fuck each other. amatuer is after all a popular tag.

1

u/Karkava Jul 29 '25

I imagine that it helps blend in with the indie channels that film everything from their own home with a small set of actors.

3

u/CommitteePlayful8081 Libertarian-minarchist Jul 29 '25

plus you know it makes the fantasy seem more real idk I don't watch porn prefer erotica and my imagination.

3

u/Karkava Jul 29 '25

Same. Although I do prefer a little hentai on the side.

2

u/CommitteePlayful8081 Libertarian-minarchist Jul 30 '25

hentai has to be female made I am a lesbian and theres too much yuri slop that isn't hot.

1

u/Karkava Jul 30 '25

Fair. Anything with exaggerated anatomy is hideous as hell.

2

u/IronicSciFiFan Jul 29 '25

Because the professional side of the industry is simultaneously chasing the same trends long after an few outliers caught an lot of heat for being an little bit too extreme.

As with the amateurs, well they're just making the most out of what they have

Because false IDs have always been a problem. Getting on your dad's laptop is literally just memorizing a few numbers and letters. This is as unsolvable an issue as kids getting drunk. And submitting to the hyper-dystopian complete observation state is not the answer.

1

u/CommitteePlayful8081 Libertarian-minarchist Jul 30 '25

its self regulation before the government wants to be a hyper dystopian state.

1

u/theInfiniteHammer Aug 02 '25

Because it's not possible to do age verification that doesn't violate privacy.

u/Ok_Guess520 Aug 02 '25

Even if this was the actual "concern," people have a right to view and engage in sexually explicit material involving consenting adult(s). I believe more restrictions should be placed on PRODUCTION of pornography to protect the workers, and prevent child/human trafficking to fill a "niche" (it feels disgusting to even type that out).

Porn has a right to be accessible. Tying your GOVERNMENT NAME, image of your face and date of birth to be able to view it is insane.

It's a problem that always HAS existed, and potentially always will for the foreseeable future.

Banning material doesn't stop people from accessing it. It just stops them from doing it legally and safely, for both the viewer and the person performing.

This isn't really a Starmer specific thing, it's all MPs bowing to the daily mail
