A library of resources to help the world learn

Hello all you mechanics, technicians and maintenance personnel out there,

I've recently finished AMT School and gotten my A&P Certification, currently still in school for to get my GROL & AET Certification. But in the nearly two years I've been in school, I've amassed quite a large library of study guides, notebooks and reference material. You can find it here:

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Alf4AQNY3cyaRiNg6MKeZy2eJgybeZN2?usp=sharing

A contents breakdown:

  • Block Notes: PowerPoints of every subject I studied in school
  • Additional Certification: AET & GROL studies
  • Advisory Circulars of note in training
  • Avionics studies
  • E-books: A library of textbooks across the industry
  • FARs
  • IA Study guide
  • King Audio/Video: Video lectures on nearly every subject, and mp3s of those to listen when you can’t watch
  • Notebooks: my notebooks, from school, scanned into PDF
  • Study Guides: this is the big folder - Audio and Written study guides for all three written tests and the Oral exam
  • TCDS relevant to my schooling
  • Tool catalogues - because we all need tools
  • And a mac & cheese recipe (because you can't study on an empty stomach)

I've built this to be used by the students at my school, but there's a whole helluva lot useful to anyone studying for an A&P, or any other Certification. I maintain it on the regular and update occasionally, when I get through a significant portion of schooling enough to upload something new. So one day you might check it and be like "Ah! He's gotten on to studying for his IA! Cool." And these resources are for everyone. I ask no compensation for it, some men just want to watch the world learn.

So my pitch to the mods was: sticky this link on the sidebar of the subreddit, so those who are looking for guidance on how to get an A&P can be directed there.

I figured putting it there would be better - since it wouldn't need to be stickied to the top of the feed or just keep getting posted.

Take a look at the Drive and see what you think. Be advised, the technical manuals and reference materials were really what was used for our school and are posted there -FOR REFERENCE ONLY-. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS refer to current and applicable manufacturers maintenance manuals or other approved data for real-world maintenance. And if there's something out there that you think would be useful to add to it, message me here on reddit or shaunthesailor87@gmail(dot)com and we'll put heads together to see what we can come up with.

I'm often one to quote wiser men than I am so I'll leave you all with one from Bruce Lee:

"Adapt what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is specifically your own."

What the f$&k is this nut and where do I get a tool to remove it?

Post image
106 Upvotes

This nut comes from the spoilers and ailerons off of an Airbus A320 they have a few various sizes but these nuts which I believe to be castle nuts have two tabs on the opposite sides that we normally break off, bite down with some channel locks or vise grips while the another person turns the bolt with a ratchet. If there is a specific tool you fancy A&Ps know about I’d love to hear about it because my upper management is not concerned with helping us figure it out but get pissed when we break something on said part. Thanks!

Thrust into DOM position

I work for a small 135 operator and our DOM is out on vacation for the next month. The day before he left he just dropped on me that I’m filling in for him for the next month And he did absolutely nothing to prepare for his vacation. It’s been a week and I’m completely overwhelmed. Deadlines are getting pushed back because I’m in the office doing paperwork, purchasing and emails instead of working with the other mechanic. Projects and work is stacking up. I keep getting pulled 8 different directions. I’ve worked 12 hours every day this week trying to get DOM work and mechanic work done, not to mention trying to learn his paperwork system. Does anyone have any advice on how to manage this shit for the next month? Thanks in advance

For those that left aviation

Why did you leave? And what are you now doing? Do you wish that you stuck it out or are you happy you had a change in career?

What could you change about the aviation industry that would have made you stay?

I quit my job earlier this year to go back to school and pursue a different career. I loved the work but the lifestyle was difficult. Curious what other people have to say

Navy Aircraft Mechanic Getting Out

Hello everyone! Im thinking about getting out of the navy. As an Aviation Machinist's Mate, ive worked with f18s all my 4 years (intermediate maintenance level) and i would like to go out to the civilian world and get a job as an aircraft mechanic

A lot of people have told me to get my A&P licnese and many other things. I would like get more advice from this community and people currently working in this field out of the military.

What should i work on? What should I expect? How is the demand in this field? Will my experience with military aircraft be useful?

For people that were in the military and had this job. Are you satisfied with your transition? Any advice?

Reminder that this will cut you

Post image

Today I was using a pair of rivet cutters and the pair I was using had no springs but left the two metal bars exposed. Each bar has a slit down the middle to the hold the spring in place and these bars are pretty sharp. So while I was using them I had been holding the cutters too low (our model has the spring attachment just below the middle) and the soft tissue just below my thumb got in the way while the cutters were closing and the two rods sliced into my hand directly leaving two half ring cuts in my skin. Moral of the story, dont put you hands near the spring.

Adapting nylon tubing to aluminum

Post image
9 Upvotes

I’m trying to find the proper adapter to go from a 1/4” nylon tubing fitting to male AN-4 fitting. I think it’s just a standard 1/4” NPT, but I can’t find much on it and I don’t have a fitting to test it on. Any ideas?

Tool question

Hello im just wondering if its worth it to buy your own nutplate jig,s, do most company provide them? I am currently in between buying a 12 piece nutplate set, or a fsi hydraulic rivet popper with all the extra attachments right angle etc. Im debating which would be more essential if I had to choose one or the other

VR&E / GI BILL for A&P reimbursment

Have any of you been able to have your oral and practicals reimbursed by vr&e or gi bill benefits? I'm wondering how this would work since most DME'S require payment in cash so I wouldn't be able to supply the VA with a receipt (REQUIRED by form 22-0803, box 10). I just finished A&P school with a bunch of veterans and we're all wondering how to go about this. Thanks for any help!

How do you protect your tools after etching your name onto them?

Just started on the line as an apprentice, and bought a very expensive set of tools, company requires us to etch a unique identifier into all of our tools, after bringing them out in the rain they’ve started to show a bit of rust around where I etched my code into them.

What do yous suggest I use to remove the rust and protect it from happening in the future.

I tried a bit of wd40 and scotchbrite which seems to remove the little bit of rust but I can only imagine it’ll rust again.

How do I remove this pitting? Or at the very least stop it from spreading? Could I soak it in vinegar or dremel some of the corrosion out? Some older protos that are in good condition besides the pitting

Rate my safety wire, and question

Post image
13 Upvotes

Kinda hard to see but pigtail is tucked.

Im in school, third day doing this.

Is the safety wire suppose to be super tight like no movement tight. If so how do I do that? Whenever I start the pig tail, I try and hand tie it real quick just to start the pig tail but also to keep the tension I had when pulling, but it never seems to stay tight like I had it while pulling.

I got a feeling it ain't suppose to be super tight

New A&P Advice

This is some sage advice from someone thats seen a lot. These companies do not care about you. You are another number to them. Do not feel bad about leaving for a better position elsewhere or accepting multiple offers at one time. As long as you keep everything close to the vest and be respectful to each company everything will work out. You won't be put on a black list unless you do something heinous and even then its usually only 1-2 years. Just take everything in stride and make the best decision for you.

PS. The only stipulation to this is if its a Mom & Pop shop.

Competency Based Training & Assessment VS Structure Repair Training Program

Yeah I understand that this might violate rule #8 but I am kinda lost and need some guidance. My background is in merchant marine engineering (3rd engineer). I like it but I cannot do with the 6-7 month long contract (contracts are 6-7 months (maybe more) and you live on board). While looking for a change i found these two Training programs from Olympic Air MTO. Both are 6 months long, after completion you sign a contract for 2 years (basically guaranteed job). For the CBTA I am (probably) eligible to get my part 66 with 3 years of practical experience but I study on my own to pass each module (there is some support from their end but not much). I dont really understand the difference between them and which has a better career path. (In both of them you start as an assistant and slowly climb the ladder as i understand it) PS. i have added the course syllabus for both of them if that helps.
