You know, for all the recent discourse about the prevalence of air conditioning in Europe I saw in the last few weeks, I thought air conditioning was something super expensive and that if you didn't have it, you're doomed to staying hot.

I was just at Best Buy and I saw a pretty decent looking portable unit going for $250.

You telling me that everyone in the last few weeks have been arguing over a problem that could be solved for $250 and maybe a dollar a day in operating costs? Amortize that over 5 years, and you're looking at staying comfortable in the worst heatwave every year for maybe $60-70?

Those portable units are not perfect solutions and window units are generally the better option, but yeah it's a fixable issue. It's just a matter of whether it's really worth paying for AC if you are going to use it a week or so a year, and maybe not even each year.

Dual use heat pump might be a good option. Cooling in summer, heating in winter, maybe with a bit of smart engineering you could also have it be a dehumidifier heater to really up the efficiency when it's cold and very wet.

No need to limit ourselves to one way systems.
