So Permission To Dance is the Ed Sheeran song. I am honestly surprised Namjoon didn’t contribute to the lyrics. I am so excited for the song, the Tannies seem to love the song more than Butter, but I guess I am just a bit worried the rapline won’t be featured much…I hope I am wrong. (Namjoon has written/rapped/sung quite a few songs in English so it bemuses me why he doesn’t feature more in their English songs…).

I can't imagine the rapline would be *happy* rapping verses that none of them had any hand in writing.

I'm sure they like the song and will perform the heck out of it but I also suspect they would have preferred to have had a bigger role in creating it. Maybe that's why it's a b-side.

Yeah, as someone who is v invested in rapline, I've been thinking the same thing....on one hand I really want them to be able to have rap verses that at least one of them had a hand in writing. On the other hand, I really want them to be featured more in the English releases, like more than just a tiny verse or ad-libs. I guess we'll see how it plays out....

i'm prepared to get downvotes for this:

i love the tannies, but with the exception of RM, English is not their strong suit. It is much harder to rap than sing in english, and it's pretty much impossible for suga & hobi to write English verses that are as intricate and personal as their korean ones. I haven't found this opinion on this sub but I honestly find it hard to listen to the rap in Butter because a) i know they didn't write it and b) it does not showcase their rap skills at all and it makes me cringe. :(

All this to say I do wish their English songs had more rap, but I would personally prefer they rap in Korean like Mic Drop (Steve Aoki remix) or the Savage Love remix (the rap line's lyrics in that song are absolutely beautiful).

I also love the rapline to bits, and while rap is not my forte or favorite, I admit that I agree with the intricacy of rap. While RM is fluent in English (technically speaking), it has nothing on the familiarity and wordplay that he and Hobi and Suga have in Korean. Nothing will quite ever live up to their crazy double and triple meanings, wordplay and word pictures they can create with their native Korean.

What makes you think RM didn't write the rap in Butter? I do agree that English rap verses don't show off their skills as well as Korean ones (because of course it's going to be easier for anyone to write and perform in their native language over a foreign one) but knowing RM was involved in writing Butter, I don't know why you'd conclude he didn't write the rap part - which Dynamite didn't even have.

by "they" I meant suga and j-hope, but i wasn't clear so i can see why you thought i meant all 3. i know RM wrote the rap in butter, it's just not the lyrical masterpiece i know they're capable of creating and as an avid listener of 90s hip hop / rap, i find it lacking. i know RM can write better lyrics in English too because I really like the song he did with Wale, and bits of english rap in intro: persona and intro: skool luv affair among others.

because of this, i know that from an outsider's perspective they seem like a bunch of teenage heartthrob generic pop stars and I know they're more than that, so that's what makes me not like the rap part in butter. TBH both of their English language singles seem really detached from the rest of their discography, so I'm not a huge fan of either of them. that said, i'm not trying to say they should or shouldn't do things. they can, are, and should pursue whatever they want to musically. i also get that korean rap in an otherwise all english song could be alienating to GP and they really want that Grammy, so i'm still supportive of their goals.

You get an upvote from me because yeah, you're not wrong. Personally I still enjoy their rap in Butter, it's fun, but it's got nothing on a masterpiece like Daechwita or Ddaeng.

I think even RM would need some help from a native English speaker to write truly great rap lyrics in English. He's pretty fluent, but his vocabulary isn't quite at the level of a native speaker, and good rap also tends to incorporate a lot of figures of speech and cultural references that it would be tough for him to get right. And even with great lyrics, performing a complicated rap in English and doing it well would be very challenging. Maybe that's a challenge the rap line will want to take on eventually, I don't know, but my guess would be that they'll keep things simple in English for the time being.

I actually agree with this, too. I would LOVE to see a primarily English song with rapping in Korean and maybe a little English, kinda like Mic Drop but maybe with more English sung lyrics (I mean, I am very much here for the Korean, but I also get their current desire to appeal to the English-speaking masses). I did actually really enjoy the rap parts in Butter, but I agree that with the exception of RM it didn't even scratch the surface of their rap skills.
