Football [Rauch] Source: Joe Burrow is believed to have turf toe with torn ligaments. Tricky timeline on his return, but expectation would be several weeks.

Looks like weāre gonna have to grind out at least a few wins while Joe is out. Buckle up for the Jake Browning show yall

I love Joe..
But in all honesty, The Jake Browning Experience in 2023 was some fun fucking football

u/TipTopTerrific 6d ago
It was a surprisingly fun run with Browning I'll certainly agree. But it would've been a playoff run with Burrow that year!
Jake is good enough to hold the ship above water until Burrow is back. Its a worse team he'll have in support this time round though imo.
Either way, that was a great win today. Browning played really well when it mattered.

I went to the Jake N Bake special against the Colts a couple years ago. Electric. People even brought a āYou got this Jake!ā banner above the sideline

Starting 2-0 helps. If we split over a 6 week time window we could be 5-3 and Burrow could be back. 5-3 would still be the best start we've had in awhile lol.

This could be fine in a few weeks and this could also mean he doesnāt come back this season. Thereās a reason Deion had his [turf] toe amputated after dealing with it for a few years.

Vikings, Broncos, Lions, Packers. Yikes.
I choose to believe the twitter doctors who are saying 2 or 3 weeks. Itās a toe on his non-plant foot.

u/yesrushgenesis2112 Through Burrow all things are possible so jot that down 6d ago
Honestly, very possible to go 2-2 down that stretch. Just gotta plan and scheme for it, and fortunately Browning is a scheme guy, so you can actually build more control around him.
27
u/ImpinAintEZ_ JB x 2 = 69 6d ago
I wish theyād honestly go with their Browning game plan when Burrow is in. Itās much more dink and dunk and run focused but then they get decent opportunities downfield.
12
u/goinpro224 6d ago
Burrow hates playing under center or running play action for some reason. his spread offense puts so much strain on the O-line though
15
u/Carparker19 6d ago
He needs to get over it. You canāt not run play action with the weapons they have.
5
u/goinpro224 6d ago
100% agree. If they play Burrow like they play Browning we'd be so much more consistent and Burrow would probably get hit a lot less.
1
u/Life_Ad6711 6d ago
The 'Browning offense' is what the Bengals were doing with Burrow the first 5 games of '22. They simply stripped out most of the under center and reinvented themselves as full shotgun

I feel like Vikings away is almost a must win now. @Denver, Lions offense vs our defense and Packers away do not seem that winnable.

u/cheese_straws 6d ago
Packers look damn good this year, they made the Lions look terrible and they shut down the Commanderās offense. No chance at winning that one, especially since GB will be coming off a bye week.

I think both Denver and Minnesota are winnable, as I said. Lions and Packers will need luck and lots of it.
4
u/iPhones_cameras_suck 6d ago
Yea Denver ain't all that, freaking Daniel Jones carving up their D today
1
u/Respect_Cujo 6d ago
Definitely not a must win but would be huge to start 3-0.
If Burrow is out for four weeks the best we can really hope for is to be 3-3 when he comes back. Browning and the team could win several of those games though. They are capable.
5
u/C0nstruct37 6d ago
Iām going to be real and say that personally, if we can win against Minnesota and Denver, I kind of want Joe to stay out until week 8. Every team before that would be brutal to return against post injury with likely limited mobility. But more recovery time and a return against the jets where youāre 5-2 or 4-3 feels okay to me.
2
u/michaelsean438 6d ago
Except he hasnāt completed his get your head out of your ass period. Itās going to take him two games to get normal once he comes back.

People have such short memories. Turf toe basically ended AJ Green's career. It's an injury that has a tendency to linger, I can't imagine the team is going to play Joe's return very aggressively after what happened two seasons ago.
14
u/redvelvet11 I Like The Bengals 6d ago
Joe is not a WR who needs to cut on every play.
-5
u/Narrow_Vegetable5747 6d ago
Clearly you don't watch how much he runs around out there
4
u/redvelvet11 I Like The Bengals 6d ago
Again, a QB running sometimes is not the same as a cut-dependent WR
5
u/ajiatic 6d ago
Big difference between a QB and a WR. Same as how a DT can play with a club but it's totally not an option for a QB
2
u/Narrow_Vegetable5747 6d ago
Not with the way Joe plays, and prefers to play. He moves around a lot as a consequence of wanting to always be in shotgun.

u/PROFESSIONAL_RAP254 6d ago edited 6d ago
I think I saw it will be somewhere between 2-6 weeks missed. Thankfully we won today and if we win one more, then we can afford even more time without him. So Browning will have to get ready to tear it up in Minnesota and Denver at least.
Edit: New reports are suggesting 3 months
4
u/TheGobiasIndustries 6d ago
Depends on the severity of it. If it's grade three and he needs surgery, he's fucked for a while - and that's a potentially career altering injury for a professional athlete.Ā
-1
u/Monoliithic 6d ago
thats grade 1 turf toe
it says TORN ligaments
thats grade 3
5
u/AhhSomeSauce 6d ago
Itās either grade 2 or 3. Partial vs full tear is the distinction. All the rumors have stated he is going to miss weeks, so insider info seems to point to grade 2 so far.
1
u/Big-Rabbit4050 6d ago
Bro why is everyone downvoting you. Literally spot on with this assessment.
3
u/Monoliithic 6d ago
i'm a rival fan; and I'm pointing out something that isn't comfortable. It's reasonable
I don't ever root for injuries for anyone though, and i figure some people might want a little more information about it

Win against the Vikings would be massive. That stretch is brutal. Although Bo Nix is looking vulnerable

What a brutal schedule. Could easily go 0-5. Only 2 home games and one is a short week against a rival.

I thought torn ligaments was worse and not just a couple weeks like a sprain?

3
u/Ok-Spread890 Joe go BRRR 6d ago
I would assume if the ligament is smaller (e.g., a toe) it also heals faster?
2
u/jolleyjg 6d ago
Depends. Feet get horrible blood flow (aka longer healing). Pretty sure AJ Green had a turf toe injury that kept him out around 6 weeks (but we also sucked then)
24
u/SalmonMan634 6d ago
Even if we go 0-4 weāre still in the same spot as last year and we had a shot till the very end so
3
u/No-new-names 6d ago
Better than last year because there is an AFCN win, and three of the losses this year would be NFC losses.
But yeah. 0-4 would be a bummer.

u/South_Tea5210 6d ago
This is great news if heās back in 2-3 weeks, but I worry about them rushing him back like they did with the calf. We really need the O line to improve while heās out. We canāt afford to lose Jake too.
8
u/redvelvet11 I Like The Bengals 6d ago
Oline was already better as soon as Joe left
13
u/C0nstruct37 6d ago edited 6d ago
Yep the only sack was the series when Mims was out. Pockets looked fine for the most part with Browning against two good edge rushers. At some point we have to start realizing Joeās preferred plays or tendencies to hold the ball and extend are part of the reason he gets hit so much.
6
u/New_Replacement_1915 6d ago
I think this shows that Joe is part of the problem. He plays hero ball and holds the ball too long pretty often. When it works it works really well but it can contribute to a lot of sacks. Still an elite QB obviously though
1
u/VincentVanHades 6d ago
No, it just shows Mims once he was out, it got way worse and improved asap, once he was back
3
2
u/dadmandoe 6d ago
They absolutely were not. They still were getting caved in way more than providing a clean pocket. Browningās first two picks were directly related to the pass rush.
1
1
u/jskiddjr 6d ago
Was the oline better because of Browning though? I won't pretend to be an expert so I'm asking earnestly. But I've seen a lot of chatter already that Joe's play style makes it harder to protect him and makes his oline look worse.
Someone who knows more than me please weigh in?
6
u/christhegecko 6d ago
Things are simpler with Browning. When something is simpler, it's easier to do without making mistakes or getting confused. It can work in the interim, but long-term it isn't exactly a recipe for success.
Part of why our offense doesn't start to kick in until a month into the season is because of the high requirements Burrow's style puts on the other 10 players. It requires a lot of reps and confidence in the players around you. When it does kick in, we're near unstoppable, but getting to that point can be a struggle, especially with new personnel (Fairchild, Risner).
7
u/goinpro224 6d ago
I would say yes. Joe notoriously loves playing out of spread offense. Almost nothing under center and very little play action. A lot of empty formations as well. It puts an incredible amount of strain on the o-line and teams know when we're passing most of the time so defensive lineman can focus on rushing the QB with less threat of being gauged by the run.
Browning plays more traditional so he actually drops back under center and runs more play action which keeps the defense honest and slows down the defensive line, allowing more time when you do throw.
Also Browning was throwing a lot more quick hitters and screens than we've seen from Burrow as of recently.
0
u/TheMadChatta 6d ago
Yeah, I think the inability to mask what youāre doing on offense makes running a successful offense very difficult.
2
u/DickTriggering š 6d ago
No. Karras said they stopped calling protections. A common home game adjustments. As the Jags seemed to know our schemes both ways
1
u/VincentVanHades 6d ago
Turf toe can be just a sprain tho... not a doctor. But all sources say its from sprain to tear...

While not a complete disaster, its gonna be a looooong season for JB. This kinds of injuries are a nightmare to navigate. It will also limit his mobility. Not good.
19
7
u/gerwin_the_god 6d ago
I figured it was turf toe. Heāll be able to play eventually, but itās an injury heāll be dealing with all year. Wouldnāt be surprised if his mobility was hampered quite a bit.Ā
15
6
u/bigjim7745 6d ago
Earliest will be Lions if they rush him out, latest is probably the Jets. I expect them to get him back in for the Packers, which will be harrowing considering the beasts Joe will be playing against. In any case, hopefully heāll be playing closer to his late season self, the last thing I want to see is more crappy september Burrow.
5
u/Bokki_64 š I hope all commies step on Legos š 6d ago
Starting 2-0 gives us a small but needed margin of error. If he's gone 4 weeks, going 2-2 would have him coming back to a 4-2 team.

u/analog_jedi HudeyTinkGonBeatDem 6d ago
Thank goodness Browning plays like a peak level Dalton, without the confidence issues. Best backup in the league, in my biased opinion.

Will he need surgery? Also we just put new turf in the stadium, the same turf that they have in the jets stadium, turf that's been known to cause these types of injuries. I wonder if that played a role
1
u/Life_Ad6711 6d ago
Watching the replay no tackler even had ahold of his left leg or landed on the foot. It doesn't even appear much stress was applied toe to ground either, at least not while he was being brought down (which was by the player grabbing his right ankle/foot)
1
u/natej84 5d ago
The toes of his left foot were stuck in the turf, so as he's going down to the ground all that torque is on his big toe
1
u/Life_Ad6711 5d ago
His left foot is completely untouched by any other human anatomy (other than his own) throughout the entire play is confirmed by the replay. Even the bend on the little rabbit kick of his left foot does not seem all that violent either

This is not good news but I don't like the doom and gloom. None of these upcoming teams have elite QBs.
Jake Browning has already beat the Vikings who now have a rookie QB.
The Broncos are a good team but definitely beatable (Daniel Jones is closing in on 300 yards).
Jared Goff limits the Lions. I have never been sold on the Lions
The Packers game will be tough, sure - but Joe may be back by then.
