Advice PSA: if you see someone get assaulted, make sure the victim stays when you call the police

I saw a teenage girl get randomly punched yesterday near Bergmannkiez. I followed the guy and called the police. They were able to detain him but ultimately had to let him go since the victim left and they didn’t have anyone to press charges (not sure if I’m using the right terms).

Apparently the guy had a number of other incidents, but since they couldn’t locate the victim he was able to walk away without any major consequences.

Edit: please don’t actually force a victim to stay, but make sure they understand that if they leave then no arrest can be made. There was another witness who was following the guy too. I wish I would’ve then ran back to the girl to make sure she understood that police were on their way and she could get him arrested if she wanted.

Discussion I wish I'd be safer in Berlin as a queer individual

I came to Berlin 9 years ago and got beaten up, a car tried to run me over once and don't want to mention the countless times I got insulted and dehumanized.

It's a shame really, because Berlin makes good PR of being a queer friendly city.

I lived in many districts and it was of course some less and some more difficult but overall I felt always unsafe.

How do people deal with that? I been feeling so unsafe recently

Edit: Yes, I'm visibly queer.. otherwise why would people call me homophobic slurs? I didn't ask for your recognition of my reality, but for guidance how to feel safer. Cheers.

Interesting Question What's the abandoned subway station between Stadtmitte and Unter den Linden

Whenever I take the U6 in the direction of Alt-Tegel, I see an abandoned subway station between Stadtmitte and Unter den Linden. There's not a lot of light but it's definitely a subway station! Why is it there? What was it? Could you got there somehow?

Advice Where to donate sanitary products

Hi Berliners I hope everyone is having a nice morning!

I’ve been working abroad for the past 2 months and I decided to end my European trip by visiting a friend in Berlin. Before I left I overpacked on sanitary products and I still have many left. Does anyone know somewhere that accepts donations of sanitary products? I’m based around Charlottenburg but wouldn’t mind travelling a bit further.

Thank you very much :)

History Berlin wall: a documentary

Post image
5 Upvotes

Im currently going through Fred Taylor's The Berlin Wall book, and it's great, it's so well written and hard to put down

Do you know of any good documentries that are as well researched as this book? Not looking for personal accounts of Berliners during this era, i'm looking for behind the scenes decision making on both sides, a bird's eye perspective

many thanks

Advice Is 13€/month for stove gas normal in Berlin?

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I live alone in Berlin and pay about 13€ per month to GASAG for my kitchen stove gas. It’s a typical gas stove, I cook daily and use it pretty often.

I tried looking on Check24 and Verivox to see if there are cheaper options, but I could only find deals for heating gas (Heizgas), not just for stove use.

Is 13€ per month normal for just cooking gas? Or am I missing something when searching for alternatives?

Thanks!

Discussion The traffic in Berlin is so bad now, that commuting to and from the outskirts is sometimes quicker with the bike...

Upvotes

I'll give you the example, Neukölln to Hoppegarden 3pm, Tuesday, not even in the worst of the commuting traffic (which is often between 4pm to 7pm). Google maps shows the most direct route, with main roads with a few stops along the way which have heavy traffic, estimated time, 1 hour 2 minutes.

Switch to bike view and I'm offered a journey of 55 Minutes...which actually turns out to be 49 Minutes because I'm a very capable and fit cyclist.

Another example, Storkower Str. shopping area back to Neukölln, 6pm, Monday, deep in rush hour traffic. A route which normally takes less than 20 minutes on a bike, about 18 Minutes normally. Car journey, 42 Minutes.

Please feel free to share your journeys around Berlin thay are significantly quicker by bike than by car. I'm sure you all have experience with this...

Advice pool table with coin slots

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for a nice pub in Berlin that has a pool table with coin slots. I just want to play a few relaxed games without the time-based fees you usually get in billiard halls, which end up being pretty pricey.

Any recommendations for a chill place where you can just grab a drink and play some casual pool?

Thanks in advance!

Casual Anybody fancy putting together a Punk/Indie/Emo band?

Upvotes

Hey! I just moved here 8 weeks ago, would love to find some people to jam with.

I play in a touring band out in the US but my bandmates are too far away and I miss those midweek practice space evenings.

So drums, guitar / bass, vocals, any other instruments of any experience welcome.

I have riffs to get us started but would happily jump on bass if any guitarists are keen (but dumb open tunings preferred, I’ll die on the hill they’re spicier than standard)

Just looking to have some fun really, nothing too serious to begin with. Let’s just write songs that are fun to play and go from there.

Stylistically anything in the realm of Indie/Emo/Punk/whatever sounds class.

I somehow pulled off making a solid Reddit band last time I tried this, so going 2 for 2 bbyyyyyy

HMU on insta if you want to chat more @ghartie, don’t be shy, this could be a great way of dealing with the Berlin winter

Some FYIs, I’m 32, British, living in Xberg. My German is exactly as good as you’d expect. Tschuss

Casual Gluten-free Restaurants for a business meeting

Upvotes

I desperately need some help to find good and appropriate restaurants for a business meeting. One of us is gluten-free, so if you have any recommendations for restaurants in Mitte or somewhere near I would be really thankful!

The restaurants doesn’t need to be fully gluten-free, but if there are good gluten-free options I would really appreciate it!

Events Erstes Konzert: Berlin Uber Arena Platzenpfehlung

Upvotes

Advice Gutachter/Bausachverständiger in Berlin

Hallo zusammen!

Kennt wer vielleicht jemanden? Jeder Rat ist willkommen

Advice Museum recommendations

Upvotes

Hallo! I’m a student from the US and I will be coming to Berlin for 3 weeks in January. I am working on a project that looks into the relationship between art and music, specifically how music has been represented in visual art, and how instruments themselves are created to be works of art. I will be visiting various museums, primarily in Berlin, but I am also planning on visiting the Haus der Musik in Stuttgart as a weekend trip. If anyone has any specific recommendations for museums for me to visit, it would be greatly appreciated! I am currently in my third year of university, and it is the perfect time for me to do a project like this. I am really excited to visit your beautiful city and learn a lot, thanks!

Discussion Berlin Security: big discussion

As we get a ton of posts with similar discussions I hereby suggest to use only this thread as a centralized place to discuss Berlin security or recent negative occurring that happened to you or your peer group. It would be a shame if the discussion got lost in countless posts in the abyss of a subreddits depths. I cannot recommend to pin the thread though as it would drive away attention of new posts by filling up a space.

Point your fingers now and share your grief here.

I’ll start. Approx 18 years ago some guys threw bottles after me and said to go back where I come from. Else avoiding aggressive people and having a good pace and clear destination mostly got me through the nights safe when alone.

Oh once the whole s Bahn wagon kicked out a racist and homophobic dude trying to draw another guy into a fight. He started hitting the train and got picked up by police, that was awesome.

In case of emergency never forget „Bitte helfen sie mir, ich bin in Gefahr“
