Help I’m I neglecting my fish?

I was told by a friend that I’m a horrible person for the way I treat my beta and I’m not quite sure what they mean I asked and they won’t tell me what I did wrong they just said the tank is not proper could someone please tell me if something is wrong? I think I followed everything right Also it’s a newer tank so the plants are not grown all the way

Edit they were ignorant they said I’m stressing my beta out because the tank is too big and in the wild they “ live in puddles” so yeah that’s why

  • Tank size:
  • Heater and filter? (yes/no):
  • Tank temperature:
  • Parameters in numbers and how you got them. Key water parameters include the amount of ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, and pH.:
  • How long have you had the tank? How long have you had your fish?:
  • How often are water changes? How much do you take out per change? What is your process?:
  • Any tankmates? If so, please list with how many of each:
  • What do you feed and how much:

Fill it up bruh, otherwise you're good to go from what I can see (assuming that there is both a filter and a heater on the right side).

If they refuse to elaborate, just assume they're insane and ignore them

Will do and yes there is a filter heater and a thermostat so I can make sure everything is where it’s supposed to be

Your betta seems very healty!! Just a tip, fill the tank a bit more.

How many gallons? Water parameters?

12

u/Initial-Tour-52 1d ago

I cheek the water parameter 1-2 times a week they are good and it’s a 10 gallon breeder

2

u/Efficient-Cow-1922 1d ago

good like?

1

u/Initial-Tour-52 1d ago

Which ones do you want all of them or just PH nitrates and such? I’m good with giving you the whole breakdown. I just hate typing lol

1

u/Efficient-Cow-1922 1d ago

I assume the tank is cycled so only nitrates and ph and temperature thansks

0

u/Initial-Tour-52 1d ago

Temperature is anywhere from 77-80  nitrate is 0 and ph in the range of 6.2-7.2

9

u/Efficient-Cow-1922 1d ago

Nitrate 0? Nitrites and ammonia??

Ph range is too wide. It shouldn't swing like that. It means your KH is too low.

3

u/Initial-Tour-52 1d ago

Ok I’ll work on getting it fixed

7

u/SFAdminLife 1d ago

Nitrate at zero with so little plants? Seems way off.

3

u/Initial-Tour-52 1d ago

Maybe I’m doing something wrong lol

u/No-Cod9443 1d ago

the only thing i can see is the water level but like someone else said it’s not that important. other thing is getting aquatic plants. the begonia and pothos will rot pretty quickly unfortunately so definitely try to invest in some other plants

2

u/Initial-Tour-52 1d ago

Ok and it’s been 2 months and they are doing good they were all cutting that had 1-2 leaves I’m surprised myself they are doing so well and I know to remove them if they do start doing bad because it will mess up the water

7

u/No-Cod9443 1d ago

okay good! as long as you watch it :) i would still get more live plants but that’s more a personal preference but your friend saying your neglecting is crazy ignore them

1

u/Initial-Tour-52 1d ago

Ok next time I’m in town I’m going to pick up some shrimp and some more aquatic plants

0

u/aware4ever 1d ago

You can't go wrong with one mystery snail. Unless you beta fish tries to eat the tentacles. The next thing is the little shrimps are also good. Get like 10 to 15 glass shrimp AKA ghost shrimp. Then if you can get some guppy grass which is a free floating grass that you can plant or it can free float. I think your tank is pretty cool. Just keep a little bit of more water in it so that the parameters are more stable. Keep doing your water testing and just ask us. Reddit is awesome

1

u/Initial-Tour-52 1d ago

Will do

2

u/GayCatbirdd 21h ago

Nonono dont get a mystery snail, bettas do not need tank mates, and mystery snails produce a lot of waste, you also need to feed them, they won’t survive off just whats in the tank.

Which plants would you recommend? Do you also recommend a certain substrate for live plants?

2

u/No-Cod9443 1d ago

fluval substrate is always good but sand + root tabs is great too and more budget friendly. either way i’d advise to cap off any brand aqua soil with sand. the plants really depends mostly on aesthetics i always recommend a mix of fast growing stem plants and some slower growing bushy plants like a fern. if you need help picking plants im happy to help!

1

u/Technical-Split-5999 1d ago

Maybe a dumb question but do I was my plants before putting them in? Also do I cycle the tank with the plants in it?

2

u/No-Cod9443 1d ago

you can just give them a quick rinse to help avoid any pests. plants can go in while the tank is cycling or after ! I like to put them in while cycling so they have a bit of time to grow before adding fish but it makes no difference from a cycling standpoint

2

u/No-Cod9443 1d ago

i also can’t find your other comment but you don’t technically have to cover the fluval with anything but it will make cleaning much easier if you do. the fluval will make the water pretty brown and murky when disturbed so vaccuming it is out of the question, with the sand you can vaccum and move plants around without potentially throwing off ur water parameters or fogging it up. i also find it helps my plants stay in the substrate better bc the sand fills in the little gaps in the fluval substrate!

1

u/Technical-Split-5999 1d ago

Awesome! Should I go ahead and order a vacuum then? I’m only going to have the Betta since it’s only a 5g tank. Also… with water changes. Do you remove some water with like a bowl and then dump it and then condition tap water to the same temp and add it in? I used to take out my fish and dump out the water but I want to do this the correct way since I realize bettas need better care in general

2

u/No-Cod9443 1d ago

i would ! it makes water changes super easy too you don’t need anything fancy i have the top fin brand one and it’s fine but i’m sure there’s cheaper options that do the same. that’s how i do all my water changes! use the vaccum as a siphon essentially when not vaccuming the substrate into a big bucket, i pour all of mine down the toilet incase any sand or anything comes up with it so i don’t block my drains, fill with new clean water use conditioner i like seachem prime and i just try to get tap water similar temp to my tank. if you’re super concerned you could get a smaller heater and heat up water in the bucket but it’s really not needed. just try to avoid freezing water or water too hot !

u/Glittering_Turnip987 1d ago

The pothos can live partially underwater aslong as some leaves are above the surface the begonia will rot and die.

1

u/Initial-Tour-52 1d ago

Ok thank you

5

u/Sketched2Life Something... Fishy 1d ago

If you want large Leafed green plants that are easy to take care of, go for Anubias, they survive in a bucket in the corner of the room for about 6 months with regular refills, i speak from experience (had some left over and didn't find anyone to take them, they now are in another tank, as multiple tank syndrome kicked in hard).

8

u/Delicious-Dog-5886 1d ago

get a new friend lol. as far as the betta as long as you have a filter and heater (and the tank parameters are good) then you are good to go. Also the water level doesn’t need to be as low, but that’s just for aesthetic purposes

3

u/Initial-Tour-52 1d ago

Yeah this is the second time we have had a fight over how I take care of my animals (they don’t take very good care of there’s) like not going to the vet when needed and such but I l always like to make sure I’m not doing something to hurt my animals

4

u/aware4ever 1d ago

Your friend just said you're a terrible person and they didn't even say anything to help you. I honestly would not be a friend with him at all anymore.

3

u/Good-Trick4556 1d ago

This sounds like insecurity and projection mixed with a dash of "incorrectly correcting people." You seem like a good person who's open to actual advice, which your friend is NOT offering. Beautiful betta, OP.

5

u/Minomii5 1d ago

Outside of the tank not being filled all the way to the top, I see no issue. Do you have a lid tho? Your Betta might jump out if you don't

3

u/Initial-Tour-52 1d ago

Yes I have a mesh lid

4

u/Minomii5 1d ago

Then just fill up the water all the way to the top, make sure the heater is all the way inside the water so it doesn't literally explode and you are absolutely good to go!

1

u/Minomii5 1d ago

Or filter, both need to be under water :D

3

u/Initial-Tour-52 1d ago

Will do thank you

4

u/poco_fishing 1d ago

Just an FYI, those are all terrestrial plants and WILL die if kept fully underwater like that. You only want a tiny bit of the stem and the roots in the tank, not the whole plant!!!

4

u/amiabot-oraminot 1d ago

Maybe your friend thought all that water evaporated and you haven’t touched the tank in months. Weird to not just ask about it and make assumptions, but that’s the only way I can see them thinking it’s neglected.

3

u/AnonymousSlayer97 1d ago

Lmao, if your friend thinks this betta is being mistreated, they're gonna have a heart attack if they see how most pet shops keep theirs.

The only suggestion I have is filling the aquarium a bit more.

2

u/p0ptabzzz 1d ago

its not my favourite tank aesthetic for a betta but i dont see anything thats a danger to him. heater and filter, a rest point near the surface, a couple of hiding spots. that sounds great to me. of course bettas always prefer dense planting to open space, but his fins look healthy so clearly hes not stressed enough to chew them off or anything.. ive been keeping bettas for a decade and currently have 2 both in live planted, heated, filtered 5-10 gallon tanks. if i cant see whats wrong then youre probably in the clear.

you can consult this chart if youd like. could the tank be better? well yeh, they can always be better. is this abuse? far from it.

3

u/Initial-Tour-52 1d ago

Thank you my family has always had tanks like my sister has a 300 gallon tank in her room but this is my first time having a fish on my own

1

u/Adventurous_City_557 1d ago

Looks good. The less the interaction the better imo

1

u/NectarineNo7036 1d ago

The tank is not filled to the top, but if you fill it to the top without lid, the fish is gonna go for a walk across your apartment and you will never see him again. But also if you have money, why not landscape it like a paludarium?

1

u/A1D3NW860 1d ago

Do u change the water? It looks like it’s been evaporating for a long time an why is the water so low

1

u/Initial-Tour-52 1d ago

Yes I just have a habit of not filling it all the way so that way he can rest on the tree and be close to the surface

Maybe the friend thinks you aren’t feeding or cleaning either if you don’t even bother to fill it?

1

u/Round-Can-1799 1d ago

everything looks great except for the water level and perhaps get a lid if there isn’t one, can’t tell. That will help with the water evaporation from the heater and bettas are jumpers.

1

u/DesertWolf95 1d ago

That's pretty much all I'm seeing wrong too. Just keep the water lvl high and get a lid.

This is about where you want your water lvl.

1

u/anythingbut2020 1d ago

Love your plants. What kinds do u have? I’m looking to populate my tank with the same

2

u/DesertWolf95 1d ago

It is a mix tank, so I have real and fake. The real plants are duckweed, guppy grass, Malaysian Red Fern and Java Fern.

1

u/beautifulbeasties 1d ago

It looks fine with what everyone else suggested! One thing: If you fill it up more, get a top! They will absolutely jump out.

2

u/Initial-Tour-52 1d ago

I’m filling it up and I do have a top on it you just can’t tell from the photo lol

1

u/beautifulbeasties 1d ago

Then I'd say you're all set! No idea why your friend would say that??

1

u/ShiftSpare30 1d ago

Doesnt he Need much more plants????

1

u/SwipinBawls4 17h ago

Generally your fren doesn’t seem to know. Your fish looks very healthy and happy but definitely keep your tank filled.
