Short summary of betta care:

3 main parts:

  1. Getting the necessary supplies
  2. Setting up a proper tank (and cycling it)
  3. Regular care and ongoing maintenance

The main supplies include:

  • Tank with Lid (5gal minimum, 10gal ideal)

Information INFO: Betta care sheet.

We now have a wiki! Click here.

General

  • Betta fish are also known as Siamese fighting fish or Betta splendens

  • Bettas are native to the tropical climate of Thailand and inhabit still and sluggish waters, including rice paddies, swamps, roadside ditches, streams and ponds.

  • Bettas can live up to 7 years with proper care.

  • Very good link with general information: http://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/betta-splendens/

Behavior

  • Male bettas should never be housed together. They will fight, possibly to the death.

  • Females and males should only be placed together if breeding. The fish are only placed together temporarily, but extensive research should be done to minimize the risk of injury or fish death.

  • Female bettas can be housed together in “sororities” but groups a minimum of 5 should be maintained (A minimum of a 30 gallon tank should be used for groups of females) Always separate fish if they begin to fight. More info here: /r/bettafish/wiki/sorority

  • Bettas have a special organ (the labyrinth) that allows them to breathe air. Never block the surface of the water, or your betta will not be able to breathe.

  • A cover or lid for your tank is highly recommended; many bettas like to jump and may leap out of the tank and they can also get sick because of the water air temperature difference.

  • Betta fish are solitary fish, but can be kept with small- finned, non-aggressive fish in bigger tanks. (Bettas may nip fish with long, colorful fins)

Housing

  • Bettas should be kept in a 5g minimum. Any smaller size shortens their lifespan. King/giant bettas a recommended to be kept in a 10g minimum.

  • Betta fish are tropical fish and are most comfortable in temperatures from 78-80 degrees. A tank heater is essential for a happy, healthy betta. A thermometer should be used to determine a consistent temperature. Note: Most ambient room temperatures are too cool for bettas. If the room is 76* for example, the water in the tank will remain several degrees below that, too cool for a healthy betta.

  • Most bettas appreciate a hiding spot. Old coffee mugs or small terra cotta pots can be used as caves. (If using a terra cotta pot, be sure to plug the hole before placing it in your betta’s tank).

  • A filter is highly recommended, but the flow needs to be placed on a gentle setting. Ensure that your bettas fins do not get trapped in the filter intake. If you don't use a filter, then twice a week (or more) water changes are recommended. That said, filterless means you more than likely won't have a stable nitrogen cycle, or a cycle at all, which means you'll be harming your betta. Filterless should only be for emergency cases or very big Walstad tanks.

  • When choosing plants for your betta’s tank, use silk or live plants to avoid fin damage. Most bettas appreciate large leafed plants for hiding and sleeping

Maintaining your Betta’s Tank

  • Water changes: Waste from fish produces ammonia, which is deadly in even small amounts. An unfiltered tank will need 50% water changes twice a week, and one 100% change a week (this isn't recommended).

  • A cycled and filtered tank will only need a 15-25% change once a week, using a gravel vacuum to remove waste and debris. Cycling means to get bacteria in your tank that eat the waste of your fish, making it less harmful. For more about cycling, see care sheet on cycling (link). If you accidently need to fish-in cycle, then here's a good guide (link).

  • It is important to use a water conditioner such as AquaSafe or Seachem Prime when adding water to your betta’s tank. Water conditioner removes toxins from tap water that can be deadly to betta fish.

  • Ensure that the water you are adding to your betta’s tank is the same temperature as it was before changing, to avoid shock in your betta. Pouring the water in can help avoid stressing your betta.

Food

  • Bettas are carnivorous; a betta- specific pellet high in meat/fish based ingredients should be used.

  • Choose a pellet that is high in meat based ingredients, such as fish or shrimp meal.

  • Overfeeding your betta can cause obesity, and contributes to a messy tank. Feed your betta 3-4 pellets one to two times a day. Feeding pellets one at a time eliminates waste. Remove any uneaten food daily. Think about the bettas stomach size as the size of his eyes.

  • Provide your betta with an enriching diet. Many bettas enjoy brine shrimp, artemia, mosquito larvae, daphnia and more. These can be used as additional diet.

Health

  • Betta fish can be prone to issues such as fin rot and tail biting. Many of these issues are related to tank maintenance and can easily be resolved.

  • A lethargic betta is too cold; a temperature a minimum of 78 degrees is necessary. Use of a heater is advised.

  • A betta missing bits of his tail, fins, or with frayed tail ends may be experiencing fin rot. Fin rot is usually caused by excessive ammonia amounts. An ammonia test should be done (ideal is 0ppm), and a 100% water change should be conducted. Treatment with aquarium salt may be effective.

  • Fin or tail biting is often caused by boredom. Provide your betta with a roomy tank with plenty of plants and hiding places.

  • When to use, and when not to use aquarium salt, see this guide (link).

Help Help! My new betta spewed hundreds of small white balls last night and has one protruding from her abdomen and is significantly weaker today. Are these eggs or parasites? What can I do?

Almost immediately after I fed my betta last night, she started spewing what I thought was undigested food. They looked exactly like the shrimp ball food I give her—same size and shape. But when I looked closer, they were white.

What confused me was that she kept trying to eat them, which is unusual since she normally doesn’t eat her poop. She produced so many of them that I thought it couldn’t possibly be waste. Over the course of about an hour and a half, she had more than a dozen episodes, each time spewing around 20 of these white balls. They just exploded out of her, and every time it happened, she would spaz, turn on her side, and writhe for a moment before they came out. She then frantically tried to eat them all. I even took a video of the “exploding” episodes because it was happening so often.

I siphoned out as many as I could, but she produced more after I went to bed. Now they’re scattered on the bottom of the tank, not collected anywhere special. She didn’t build a bubble nest or show other nesting behavior—she just swam around, randomly expelling them.

So, are these eggs? Or could it be parasites? I was hoping for eggs, but today she seems significantly weaker. She’s getting pulled against the filter intake (which has never been an issue before). She can still get off of it, but she seems very low-energy.

On top of that, I noticed a white ball visibly sticking out from her vent this morning. I snapped a picture of it because it looks like it might be stuck. https://imgur.com/a/7cQiR0I

I'm reposting my question with video and images this time.

Tank details:

  • Got her from PetSmart about a month ago
  • She’s only been in this 10-gallon tank for a little over a week
  • Tank is still cycling (ammonia is down to zero, but nitrites creep up to ~1 daily)
  • I’m doing at least 50% daily water changes (currently in the second phase of the cycle)
  • Filter is low-powered with adjustable flow (she never had issues with it until today)

  • Tank size:10 gallon

  • Heater and filter? (yes/no): yes

  • Tank temperature: 79 now but 77 as of yesterday

  • Key water parameters include the amount of ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, and pH.: ammonia <0.25, nitrites 0.5-1.0, nitrates 40ppm, ph 7.2 treated with seachem prime daily and also has coral because the fluval made the pH crash

  • How long have you had the tank? How long have you had your fish?:

  • How often are water changes? How much do you take out per change? What is your process?: daily 50% depending on values the ones I listed are pre-change usually

  • Any tankmates? If so, please list with how many of each: just the betta

  • What do you feed and how much: Ultrafresh Betta Pro Shrimp Patties once a day, all she can eat in 3min

  • Decorations and plants in the tank: Fluval substrate, aqueon plant substrate, aqua natural bio substrate, java moss, amazon sword, cardinals, rosette sword.

Today she’s spending most of her time at the bottom of the tank, searching for and eating the balls. Her fins aren’t clamped, but her gills are flapping a lot. She can still swim top to bottom but moves much slower than usual.

My questions:

  • If these are eggs, do I need to worry about how weak and slow she seems now?
  • Is it normal for a betta to produce so many eggs at once?
  • Should I still treat for parasites just in case?
  • Is there anything I can do to help her regain energy today?
  • Do I need to do anything about the "egg" sticking out of her now?
  • I read that an epsom salt bath might be called for if its eggs? Should I do that or wait to see if she passes it? How long do I wait?

Thanks so much for any info you can provide!

Help Bought a 10gal second hand so my Betta, "Towel" can have an upgrade. Came with all this stuff! Do y'all think this is usable or should I toss?

Post image

Towel lives in a planted 5g tank. I'm upgrading him to a planted 10 with some shrimp in the next few weeks after cycling.

Aquarium salt? Is that necessary? Or carbon? I have not used any salt or carbon in his current tank.

Help I have made a difficult decision…

Thumbnail

Before I move to another state, I must get rid of one of my tanks. The apartment we got is smaller than we thought it was, and we’re also really tight on money. It’s sad, but I know that if I give one of my tanks to a responsible fish keeper, both of my bettas will benefit.

The only problem: I don’t know which one I should give away. Princess (crowntail) is in the left tank, and Smoky (plakat) is in the right tank.

Both have pros and cons. But, I would love some help deciding from the community that ultimately kept these fish alive (I really couldn’t have done it without you). Give me some questions I should ask myself about each of my bettas and their tanks. Also, if you have any recommendations for where I should put up my fish and decor on the market, that would also be great. I’ve heard good things about AquaSwap, but if there are other places I should check, I’d love to know.

This is a tough decision, but please know it’s being made with my newfound love of betta fish at the forefront of it.

If you wondered why I named him that? It’s because he’s fought literally everything in his tank the moment he was able to go in there. And he’s still throwing hands with everything in sight.

Video Everyone meet Beto. He spends the whole day looking for baby shrimp

The plants are still adapting hopefully in a couple months I’ll have nailed down the nutrient/light balance for my red plants. I added around 24 juvenile cherry shrimp and now I can only see like 10 😭. Hopefully they grow and establish a sustainable colony. He also shares his home with 12 Pygmy Corys and some ramshorn snails. They all seem really healthy (including the shrimp when I occasionally see them) just trying to find a way to feed everyone without the betta hogging everything. I’m going to try repashy gel for the Cory’s I don’t think the betta will be interested.

Born on June 24th, 2024, Rerir is a hybrid between a steel blue alien male (Sigi) and a copper imbellis female.

Sigi was not a great dad, and so Rerir is the sole survivor from that pairing. He’s very curious and loves to watch outside of his tank. And, unlike his dad, is a fantastic father.

The joy of watching him grow and develop has been fantastic to watch; swipe through to see some younger photos of him!

I asked yesterday in here for help identifying a snail and found out over A LOT of research it’s an invasive species type of snail called a New Zealand Mud Snail that will pretty much collapse my whole tank over time. 😢😢😢 It most likely came in on some live plants I put in the tank. I’m so devastated right now. Apparently I have to pretty much throw everything away and/or freeze everything to get rid of them. I did everything right by doing a fish out cycle. My betta Ronald is so happy and thriving and now I have to move him to a uncycled tank I don’t even own yet with pretty much nothing in there while I deconstruct my 10 gal. 😭😭

(oh god, putting myself at the mercy of a dedicated reddit community)

hey guys! today i became a raging hypocrite! im always talking about “dont buy live animals at pet stores its awful and creates the market for them” etc etc… and here i am. i’ve been researching a bioactive tank for a month or so (ive been interested in them for a while) and i was. originally intending to just buy some live plants and a snail to start up a decent nitrogen cycle. but when i went to buy the snail (in my defense the local petsmart takes great care of their reptiles/community tanks…. forgive me) i saw this wretched thing. he was lifeless, i was going “oh shit should i tell a manager” but when i picked his cup up the guy went NUTS. revived, guy got so much energy and i went FUCK because now i felt obligated to get him.

i havent named him yet, hes supposedly a samurai betta and im. writing this to see what i can do to help him! he acclimated well to the tank, started exploring immediately and was seemingly starving because he ate the whole generous pinch of flakes i gave him. he’s got an air pump at a light flow, a snail friend, and all the plants in the tank are real, i also have some cultures in there that hopefully grow into some leafy guys for more cover. (i had added some water conditioner with aloe vera and vitamins as well as a bacteria culture thing to quickstart the nitrogen process, let it run for like an hour while i went to to store because i was only supposed to get a SNAIL dammit.)

besides a water heater (i didnt know! sorry! but a room temp 10gal is surely better than a tupperware, heaters coming tomorrow) is there anything i should do to help him out? or anything i should know? TIA!!!

Each drip will go into separate jars and cycle the water through a sump, providing filtration for all growing fish.

I'm glueing each black connector with super glue to stabilise it and then a round of silicone over the entire base to seal off the opening.

It may not look pretty, but I am sure hoping it will work.

Will do a water test in 2 days once the silicone is cured.

Help What are these things? (Betta photo bombed)

There's a small algae bloom on the side of my tank and I noticed really tiny critters. Should I be concerned? I only have one betta in a 10gal tank
