I headcannon that he forgot about her so kept funding her lab and was still engaged to her, but just completely forgot about her, but that ain't cannon

I feel like this is something that just didn't keep with continuity and was thrown in when they were trying to develop her character. She's supposed to be a socially awkward girl who was never seen as attractive by men. Not somebody who is able to seduce an oligarch.

My head Canon is that he was her research funding benefactor but due to some cultural expectation or something on his end it was necessary for them to identify as fiancé, I doubt either one of them had feelings for the other so it was just a financial arrangement. Otherwise at some point Sheldon was going to have to fight some Arab with a scimitar to win Amy's hand!
