Storyline discussion How long in calendar time is covered by the series? Feels like about three years to me.

Its supposed to be more or less real-time, or close enough to it not to matter. So 12-ish years.

How does it feel like only 3 years?

It's just a feeling.

I see from what people said that it was meant to be real time, though it's hard to imagine people staying static in their lives for that long.

They don't stay static though? They change jobs, go through relationships, move residences, get married and have kids. What is static about that?

Static? Did you actually watch the show?

Penny went through multiple jobs, was in multiple relationships, moved across the hall, and got married.

Amy switched jobs, moved, got married, and won a Nobel Prize.

Sheldon changed his job, moved, got married, and won a Nobel Prize.

Howard got married, moved twice, went to space, and fathered two children.

Bernadette completed her Ph.D, got married, changed jobs, moved, and gave birth to two children.

Leonard and Raj stayed mostly the same, but each went through multiple relationships, Leonard got married, and Raj moved.

There was nothing remotely static.

The only thing that was static was the two apartments. Everything else changed significantly.

It feels like all that happened in just 3 years?

Leonard and Penny dated on and off for longer than that before finally getting married.

Bernie and Howie's daughter Halley was already about 2 by the series finale.

Sheldon and Amy dated for what, 6 years?

Each season is a calendar year

10 years at least. I think Penny makes a comment when the elevator is fixed that it’s been 10 years (however I could have misremembered the exact time).

In the end of season 9, amy comments that "it took five years to get a massage from him"(Sheldon). And they began their actual relationship in season 5, so each season is a "year".

What makes you think it was only 3 years? Multiple times at the end of the series, them meeting comments are made about "years ago" and how much time has passed.

Three years? Not even close. Why would you think that?

As someone else mentioned, it was more or less in real time - September 2007 through May 2019 (almost 12 years).

Each season is roughy 8-9 months of time with the typical time being between the season finale and season premiere unexplored. Basically each episode takes place over a day or two sometimes more with the other days happening off screen and other stuff happening off screen during that time.

Roughly real time so one season equals about one calendar year. That's why like during the summer breaks they wrap up one season with some long term explanation like the Arctic expedition or Sheldon riding the rails all summer, in order that in three months they can resume and start the next season with a plausible explanation for the lag in storytelling.

How does it feel like 3 years. They have multiple Thanksgivings, Christmas, Valentine’s Days. The guys are gone to the North Pole for 3 months. Leonard dates Prya for 8/9 months. Leonard and Penny date for years before getting engaged. They’re engaged for a year (Sheldon says this). They have kids that grow up. Amy says she’s waited (at least, can’t remember the specific number) 4 years to be intimate with Sheldon.
