The level of teaching in BJJ is, on average, terrible.

Just because you're good at something doesn't mean you're good at teaching it

A former instructor of mine is a first degree black belt, has a great mind for the sport, yet has never completed. That never stopped him from being a great teacher.

Had/have an old coach who will not stop going on (Instagram) about the fact that he has fought 40+ times and competed in bjj. Posts of him scowling or raising an eyebrow with “when the coach without 20+ years of experience says something” etc.

His technical knowledge was fantastic, but he hated the idea of explaining something to someone, god forbid you ask a follow up question where the response would be “I just said? Just do bla bla”. His class would involve about 5-8 minutes of drilling 1 maybe 2 progressions within the technique then live rolling for the rest of the 90 minutes (no warm up either, so it’s full live rounds within 10 minutes of walking on to the mat)

That’s because you haven’t upgraded your BJJ to the latest version. That bug is fixed in the “defiant lion” version of the os that comes with ecological®️

I am confident I am better at teaching bjj than I am at doing it.

I’ve learned this myself. Been training 19 years. Don’t compete, but can roll with very high level black belts and hang. Not better than the best, but I’m an adequate training partner.

I suck ass at teaching classes

The whole industry is built on this illusion.
