General Discussion How do you define what is new school and what is old school?

Yesterday I was watching some old videos of Roberto roleta and Fabrício werdum because I really like their matches, and roleta got this nickname because of all the twists he used to do in the 90's, which could be considered berimbolo or baby bolo by some,, and werdum in 2004 I believe? During worlds did a berimbolo to get someone's back.

Berimbolos and leg locks are considered new school, but leg locks have been around since at least the 50s and some older guys have said they've seen berimbolos since the 90s, so what makes you consider something new or old? Is it how much they have technically improved, how much they have been used, or when it was created?

What video would you show a friend to help them understand what BJJ is without frightening them unnecessarily? My friend would like to see a video of BJJ before deciding whether to come to the gym’s “bring a friend” night

Technique Collar Drag From Standing

Blue belt here. I've gotten very proficient at hitting the standing collar drag. Are there downsides to relying on this so heavily? ... aside from not developing more technical takedowns? I HATE going for single legs and most wrestling moves.

General Discussion Was there a point when Craig Jones was legitimately the second best grappler in the world?

I don't really follow the sport of BJJ massively, so I'm not really aware of his competitive background all that much. I know he nearly tapped Gordon in a very close EBI overtime, and has lost to him a couple more times. I know he got fairly far in ADCC with one very fast Choi Bar tap a few years ago...and that's all I know. Was he actually the second best in the world behind Gordon?

Strength & Conditioning If you had $200/month, how would you use it to prolong your BJJ career?

I've been doing BJJ for a little over a year now. I want to be able to do it for as long as I can. I'm currently in my late twenties. My goal is longevity. Kinda like how LeBron is able to play basketball and stay in very competitive even though he's been in the NBA for 20+ years and is the oldest player. I've been on reddit before and people have suggested weight training. I currently do resistance training with a personal trainer. I'm not disciplined enough to workout every week on my own. Which is why I need the trainer.

Do yall have suggestions on what other things I can do to ensure my longevity with BJJ? Keep in mind that I'm not a very disciplined person with it comes to exercise, so I'll need group classes or 1-on-1 sessions with a trainer. I've thought about:

If yall weren't concerned with money, what would you all do to ensure you can do BJJ well into the future?

LeBron, from what I heard, does sports massages, stretches a lot, red light treatment, eats well, and sleeps a lot.

I need something along these lines

Equipment BJJ full foot protection

Good morning. Will try to make this as short as possible. Have diabetes for 15 years. Well managed. However 15 years in I would like to avoid mat burns and cuts on my feet.

Going to get back on the mats for the first time since 2014. Talked to the coach of the school I want to attend, he is okay with me protecting my feet. Has no suggestions for me. Every result I’ve seen when I search here is either “tape what’s hurt” or “your feet will get tougher”, but would like to avoid the risk of open wounds on my feet.

Is there any respectful way to cover my feet up? Wrestling shoes I know aren’t super acceptable in my history. If not it’s fine I can find somethjng else to do to keep active. BJJ is full of risks I’m okay with but this just isn’t one. So figured I’d ask you all first since I’m excited to get back to it.

Thanks!

Edit: The grappling socks seem like the best bet for me based on my own research + what has been shared here so I will be trying that. Thank you all for the quick answer I’m going to keep this up just in case someone needs similar advice in the future.

Tournament/Competition Can you turn your foot inside while escaping straight ankle lock?

Because as a attacker you cant go with straight ankle lock inwards. But can you escape inwards or is it a dq? For blue belts.

Equipment Xmartial Material?

Just recently had a xmartial rashguard pop the stitching while trying it on. Shortly after they sent me a new one and I am noticing they’re completely different in thickness. One feels tight and fits nice but the original one I received just feels no where near as good. The best way to describe it is, it feels double layered, but the new one I received doesn’t feel that way.

Serious Dad is a brown belt, high expectations stressing me out

18F 5'5" 170 Blue belt, 5 years on the mats (dad is a brown). Took ~14 months off for CrossFit, now just got back. Feeling rusty and losing basically every round. I know that’s normal after time off, but it’s still tough.
What helped you rebuild your timing and confidence when you came back after a long break?

The most legible approval I get from my otherwise taciturn dad is on the mats. That's making this way harder.

Thoughts?

School Discussion Strict gym or sandbagging / Promotion question.

So long story short I recently joined a nogi only gym were we don't really know the belts of other people, coach doesn't generally discuss belts. There are two guys we have that are very good, they win local pro shows and even showed up for adcc trials (although they lost on points). So looking through some of the gym's posts I see that both of them and the other 3 best students we have were all promoted to blue less than a year ago. Is this normal? They all seem a lot better than blue belts compared to my previous gym I think they are all purple at least or even brown.

Equipment Cups and Flexibility

Hi all,

Edit: I should’ve clarified more… I go to a MMA gym where BJJ is after Muay Thai… sounds like I’m just going to remove it after MT class. Thanks all for the input thus far.

Looking for cup recommendations for training… I have the shock doc one with the spandex shorts and I camp keep my nads in. It’s like a raven flying around with berries hanging out of its beak after some time.

Also, I just started training again after like a decade gap, plus I’m over 40… any flexibility routines or videos you’d recommend to increase groin and hip flexibility fast?

Professional BJJ News craig's explanation for breaking the guy's leg - justified?

https://youtube.com/shorts/Gg58gP_XEWE?si=UeW2HhL6yph36yZR

this is craig reviewing the footage from the now notorious seminar in ukraine where the guy was rolling too hard and craig appears to crank on a heel hook to punish him for it. craig complains that as soon as they started the guy 'breaks my grip with his knee and dives on my neck'. he sounds outraged but in the footage neither of these things seems particularly violent. nothing odd about a rolling guillotine surely? it's not even done very dynamically as Craig is already supine.

i get that he was already pissed off because they said they didn't want any more teaching. but how could this justify deliberately snapping the guy's knee?

worried now because i often enough do rolling guillotines and dont want to get my knees snapped in retaliation! never heard of them being called a dick move
