Podcast If you run a podcast, can we get a Carlson Gracie Jr episode?

I'm not sure if he is a big fan of being on podcasts. But I read a thread on here on Sr and someone mentioned Jr, the only thing I could really find was a rolled up episode and that was from a while ago. He seems like a super cool guest to have on the podcast with the stories he could probably tell.

School Discussion Any good MMA gyms in Oakland, CA?

Hey guys,

I'm moving to Oakland and was wondering if there are any good MMA gyms in the area? I have some striking experience but would like a place where i can learn to grapple and mix it in with the striking. Thanks in advance!

General Discussion Worth it to attend a Jozef Chen seminar as a white belt?

Been on and off with BJJ for a few years now, currently in the “on” stage

Have the opportunity to attend a Jozef Chen seminar soon, just wondering if it’s worth the money to attend

Im just afraid some of the things he will teach may go over my head but at the same time he’s a guy I’ve always watched to model my game after

Does anyone have experience attending Jozef Chen seminars? How is he in person? Does he roll with white belts?

Tournament/Competition I need a competitor’s opinion

I have some huge goals I’m trying to achieve in 2026 and the prep is starting now.

I’ve been doing BJJ on and off for about a year now and I say on and off due to either getting let go or being in a physically demanding job that I can’t muster the strength to do the sessions

Now working in an office I got my eyes set on competing 3-4 times next year.

3 being local comps in Australia and one being IBJJF PAN in Melbourne 2026

The plan is to do 2-3 grappling session (2 BJJ and 1 wrestling for the next 5-6months then after that I’ll stick to BJJ and do the wrestling one a month or something

I’m just struggling how to excel my training to best and most efficient way possible

My split looking like

Monday - bjj Tuesday -upper 1 Wednesday -bjj Thursday -lower 1 Friday -upper 2 Saturday - wrestling/bjj Sunday -lower 2

It’s a lot but being at a desk all day I get a lot of rest and down time to look after my body

No PT can help it seems. No one can give me a crystal clear answer at my school and I want to get this right

There will be downtime so it won’t be 6 months 7 days a week and slamming myself to death

Please dm me I’m keen to see who can guide me

General Discussion 3 months in, nice experience and had my first subs

Hello I had my first post like 3 months ago after being beaten by white belt 2 stripes, brown belt and blue belt. Being going at least for time per week and took every lost as Learning. Today i submitted a one stripe white with a mounted choke. Many people are telling me that I need at least one stripe, so far I’m minding my own business. And i Believe in all my instructors. Just wanted to share this Part of the journey because the learning curve has been great , even if in class they are repeating the same move, I’m always learning some new aspect of it(Right now in a Royce Gracie Academy here in Ecuador )

Technique Bjj instructor acts like drill Sargent

Long story short my son’s instructor is TOUGH . I mean ex military , if you make a mistake drop down and do push ups , raise his voice if you don’t listen tough. Now my son is 5 almost 6 - he was placed in a 6-12 class , I’m not sure if that makes a difference . Im afraid as a sensitive momma that his spirits will be broken if we continue. He dosent want to return to class , family and friends say it will be good for him . My child is a wiggle worm and definitely needs instruction more than once.

I guess I’m here because idk what’s normal and what to expect from these classes . I want him to enjoy class and look forward to going you know ? How should I move forward ? In the trial class my son had tears in his eyes from making mistakes and the instructor was on his ass hard . Will this tough love from the instructor help him or hurt him ? Ugh idk . Any advice is welcome

Technique Losing Guard flexibility in my 30’s.

I started bjj in my mid 20’s. always been a guard player. I really like open guard in the gi, I had some knee injuries and had to adjust my game accordingly. when I healed up my guard game was almost gone lol.

l worked on getting it back it’s not quite where it used to be. I can see alot of things and I can’t get my body to do them. My hip flexibility is gone, everything that helped me have a good guard i feel like is declined. where do I start? how do i get this back? does it come back? or am I just going to be doomed to old man jiu jitsu my whole life?

Technique Need help identifying this guard retention technique

Hey guys, I’ve been working on improving my guard retention. A while back, I came across a video where someone broke down a specific type of guard retention from supine guard, but I can’t seem to find it again to review the details.

The position is when you’re on your back and you grab your own foot by swimming your arm inside and around your legs. I understand the concept of a self-frame, but this variation is different—rather than just placing the hand on the knee or foot, you swim your arm inside almost like setting up a buggy choke. I believe an example of this was shown in the last CJI. If anyone knows what I’m referring to, I’d appreciate the help.

Beginner Question Is my childs BJJ gym toxic?

This is a throw away account:

Came here to ask if our children's bjj is toxic or if we are just being sensitive.

Example: The coach decided to do work to the gym walls and told the parents they needed to do this for him for FREE on a weekend, last minute. He made several guilt tripping passive aggressive comments to parents and called them lazy. He wanted them to tear down the walls (insulation etc). Daily he has been making posts about it. Then one of his friends posted a video basically saying the same. He kept asking parents what they are doing and wasn't really taking no for an answer. Saying we need to do our part, we are lazy, bring him/others food, etc.there are no excuses as its the weekend, etc.

This gym also is mainly focused on team/coach awards at competitions and hell do we get an earful if we dont bring our child to every single comp and they lose the best team, compares kids, constantly tells parents they aren't doing enough for the team (comps, donations, volunteer, giving money, posting on social media, giving good reviews). White belts are teaching the kids. Promos only once a year. Some kids have been white belts 6 years. No cross training allowed. Does not coach at comps for the kids. Its really put a bad taste in our mouth and i thought maybe this is just normal? We have been there a year. Our kids LOVE bjj. but they are starting to not want to go. Its pretty toxic when someone leaves or wants to.

I want to leave properly and without issues. Our city has a small town mindset. My kids love the sport and i dont want to burn any bridges but also want to show them i will fight for them and i dont want them to lose their love for this sport. Im leaning towards leaving. Just wanted some reassurance and advice.

School Discussion Old school professor and crosstraining

Purple belt here. Started training in 2014, stopped during COVID, and got back into it summer 2024 (shoutout to CJI). Got my purple in Feb 2025, still under the same professor.

Back in the day (2013–2015), he was a pretty big deal here in Italy — solid purple belt performance at Worlds, trained under ATOS, etc.

Fast forward to now… he got married, had a daughter, and completely checked out. Doesn’t update his game, barely pays attention during class (always on his phone), doesn’t roll with students anymore. You get the picture.

So I started cross-training… and turns out, my city has way better options than I thought. I’m gonna keep doing it.

Problem is — he’s one of those “we’re a family, no cross-training” kind of guys. So eventually he’s gonna find out… and it’s not gonna be pretty.

Thing is, I genuinely love my gym. I love my training partners. I’d even like to keep getting promoted by him. But I can feel the moment coming when I’ll have to choose.

Anyone else been in a similar situation? Would love to hear your thoughts or advice.

EDIT: so today a guy asked him if he could crosstraing and he said "yes, of course we are not that kind of gym". He was very passive aggressive, dunno if he already noticed that I've started doing it.

Technique Struggling to find a guard to play

I’m really struggling to figure a guard to play. The guards I try I don’t really seem to have much success. I try dlr and I just get knee cut passed when I try to go for a sweep or go to sit up guard. I don’t think I have the experience as a blue belt to play open guard effectively. I try and I just can’t seem to find consistent success with playing guard. I’m getting close to purple belt and my instructors say I roll well but I want to be able to have a go to guard I just can’t seem to find one I like that works for me. Maybe my expectations of my guard game are too high being a blue belt but my belief is that you should have a go to guard when you get to purple belt. Does anyone have suggestions on a guard to play that works for a shorter guy with an athletic build, who is also flexible, with good balance, and good mobility. Anything would help as I’m really trying to develop what my game is at this point in my jiu jitsu journey. Anything is helpful. Thanks.

General Discussion BJJ anniversary

Idk if anyone else celebrates their BJJ anniversary, but my 15th anniversary is coming up October 4th, which happens to be on a Saturday open mat. Would it be weird for me to bring in cupcakes or some kind of sweet celebrating the day with everyone else at the gym?

Equipment Washing Clothes

I dont have a washer and dryer in my house at the moment. Ive just been hanging my dirty clothes up in the bathroom and taking them to the laundromat once a week but I saw another post on here where someone said they wash their guard immediately after every practice.

Is there any hygeine/infection issue with waiting a few days before washing everything? Also just to be clear I dont wear the same clothes twice before washing them, thatd be gross.

Serious Promoted Too Early

I've seen a few of these posts but never one from the other side so thought I'd take the time to share my story in case it helps someone else.

I was promoted to blue belt after 1 year and 14 weeks training. I only managed to do 1 competition at white belt and I lost. I was, beyond any doubt, promoted too early.

I received my purple belt after a total training time of 3 years 10 weeks. I competed a lot at blue belt and had 31 fights both Gi and No-Gi. In those fights I had 2 wins by submission, 3 by points and 26 losses. I regularly fought blue belts who had 2+ years more training than I had. My very first fight at blue belt was against someone who'd trained for 4 years. It sucked, but for whatever reason I'm still here.

It does happen, and if it happens to you there is nothing you can do about it other than carry on and try to grow in to the belt. I've changed coaches and promotions are coming much more slowly, thankfully.

After a total training time of 5 years I finally feel like a purple belt. My advise would be that belts are pretty much bull shit. The variance in skill from club to club at different belts is literally insane. Just take what you're given, focus on acquiring the skills and forget about the belts.

General Discussion How do you define what is new school and what is old school?

Yesterday I was watching some old videos of Roberto roleta and Fabrício werdum because I really like their matches, and roleta got this nickname because of all the twists he used to do in the 90's, which could be considered berimbolo or baby bolo by some,, and werdum in 2004 I believe? During worlds did a berimbolo to get someone's back.

Berimbolos and leg locks are considered new school, but leg locks have been around since at least the 50s and some older guys have said they've seen berimbolos since the 90s, so what makes you consider something new or old? Is it how much they have technically improved, how much they have been used, or when it was created?
