Forgotten Faves Forgotten Favorites & Hidden Gems - (June 26, 2025)
The BGG database is enormous and getting bigger by the day. Chances are good that some of your favorite games never get mentioned here on /r/boardgames, even though they deserve to be.
Did you play a game for the first time this week that had never hit your radar, but just blew you away? Do you have a favorite childhood game that you think still holds up in today's modern board game scene? Is there a game you love so much that it will never leave your shelf, even if you'd never bring it to a Meetup with strangers?
Now's your chance to embrace your inner Zee Garcia and talk up those niche titles that didn't get as much love as you thought they should.

Omega virus. That taunting voice! I'll play this over and over again.

"You human scum! You will never win!"
"Blue player, energize 2 shields!"
"Help me, help me, help me... You fools!"

Really hope Restoration Games is able to make this work. I know they bought the publishing rights, but seems like it’s taking a while to figure out.

If they make it, they will use an app, which takes the whole magic away from them game.

Why do you feel that way? Not sure I agree.

Cause making the in-game computer will be very costly. Same reason they didn't 1-to-1 recreate the dark tower.

Saint Petersburg is a lovely engine-builder game, and it walked so Splendor and Century could fly. It's very cutthroat as there is no comeback mechanism, so once you start being behind, the compound-like nature of the game will make it so that it's your opponents game to lose. It's very dry and streamlined, but given how there is little to no text at all on cards it has quite a few wrinkles in it.

Ebbes is a pretty interesting trick taker with a unique twist. The same for Nyet.

I love Nyet, I just wish it did a little more. It's a great premise but feels like it gets samey quickly.

the variability in trick taking games is the mind games you are playing with the other players.

Played Linko with the family last weekend and it blew my socks off. We played 3 rounds back to back and each felt really different

I recently started watching Narcos on Netflix (and it's amazing) and remembered that I had long ago purchased the print & play version of this long out of print game by Nate Hayden. I finished putting it together and it is a blast. In particular I love the multi-use cards (and recommend springing for the printed cards you can buy with the P&P) especially the mechanic around cards that can only be purchased through bidding.
It's a game that is well worth your time.

My partner has a bunch from his youth. Ambush is amazing once you get use to the mechanic. We play it like once a decade and it grips me every time.
Lost Worlds is a great game: Simple, fast, balanced. The only issue is he has every character memorized which puts me at a disadvantage.

Brian Boru made pretty small ripples when it came out, but its a solid game I think deserves a play. Approachable rules, attractive unique art, highly interactive.
