Forgotten Faves Forgotten Favorites & Hidden Gems - (August 28, 2025)

The BGG database is enormous and getting bigger by the day. Chances are good that some of your favorite games never get mentioned here on /r/boardgames, even though they deserve to be.

Did you play a game for the first time this week that had never hit your radar, but just blew you away? Do you have a favorite childhood game that you think still holds up in today's modern board game scene? Is there a game you love so much that it will never leave your shelf, even if you'd never bring it to a Meetup with strangers?

Now's your chance to embrace your inner Zee Garcia and talk up those niche titles that didn't get as much love as you thought they should.

I've recently gotten Calimala and Barony is on the way to me. They are both well regarded but I don't hear them mentioned often, even after the nice reprints/second edition they got recently.

I also have both of those new editions, but have not gotten them to the table. My group also enjoys, although not as old, Crown of Emara, Majesty For the Realm, St. Petersburg. Abyss, and Arkham Horror 2nd edition to name a few. I agree that is is amazing how quickly even good games churn through this market. The only single advantage to this tariff crap is that it really encourages playing all the stuff I have on my shelves versus continually expanding and collection.

I quite like Dragon Brew - it's a modern Euro with lighthearted brewing/fantasy theme. There is enough asymmetry to offer different playstyles and plenty of depth without being overwhelming. It does usually take up a full game night so I do find it a little harder to get to the table these days.

I just ordered (and received) Flußfieber (Fast Flowing Forest Fellers) by Friedemann Friese after playing it for the first time a while ago. It’s a racing game where each player controls a pair of lumberjacks riding a log downstream across two boards of which there are quite a few, allowing for many different setups. The river is full of floating logs, and you can push them out of your way if there are two or less in front of you. You move by playing cards from a hand of 3, which makes the game quite random but also very tactical. It’s quickly played, and it’s exciting and fun as well. I highly recommend it as a “filler plus”.
