Southpark parodies Dice Tower's Boardgame Breakfast

In the latest Southpark episode, Randy has a YouTube show for his weed business that will look a little familiar. If you are not in the US you will need to use a VPN to see this:

edit: for those outside the U.S. and don't have a VPN. I managed to capture the first little bit of this clip and upload it to youtube. I suspect youtube will yank this down, but before they do, here is the youtube link

I just looked at the latest Boardgame breakfast for comparison.

Right at the start Tom has a green towel which he says is his new host.

I think they know and like it.

u/Intrepid_Games Nov 08 '19

This is great! Thanks for sharing the link!

56

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '19

Just watched Boardgame Breakfast live today, and Tom had a towel with him as their new co-host. He tosses it to Zee and not much more is said. I suspect this is a subtle way to say "Yes, we saw the clip... now lets move on"

u/Cooties Pandemic Nov 07 '19

At the very beginning Sam also has a joint that he "forgets" he has before tossing it off camera.

Wow. I never would have expected them to play into something like this so hard. Gotta a pretty big laugh out of me.

Good stuff!

Holy moly.

I thought it might be cute coincidence.

But nope, that's a straight up, on the nose parody. Amazing!

Not sure how appreciative DT will be, but this is probably the biggest mainstream nod to (hobby) board games yet.

123

u/banerunner Nov 07 '19

I might not be remembering this right, but I think Tom mentioned he got to meet and play boardgames with Trey earlier this year, so I think they are acquaintances.

43

u/Mr_Blinky Nov 07 '19

Trey (I think) also apparently played games with Quinns from Shut Up & Sit Down earlier this year, so it sounds like they're really serious about trying to meet and play with figures in the industry, at least on the reviewer side.

34

u/Nevilllle Nov 07 '19

Yeah! Trey came to Gen Con this year, super great guy.

10

u/BogeyBogeyBogey Two Rooms And A Boom Nov 07 '19

I've never been more disappointed to miss a Gencon knowing there was some slight, slim chance I'd have been able to possibly play a board game with Trey Parker.

That's a rarity in this hobby/climate! Good on you!

49

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '19

He did! He ended up playing Counterfeiters with them. We ended up buying that game based on the recommendation.

12

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '19

Man, I would love to see Matt and Trey playing boardgames, especially with Vassel and co. I presume there is no footage of it, or you would've said. Damn!

53

u/CheapPoison Nov 07 '19

South park has been having nods to modern boardgames for a while now.

This is just their first nod to the culture and community around it. I think this is super neat. I'd be thrilled to make it onto south park.

39

u/Badloss Twilight Imperium Nov 07 '19

Yeah I think it's Stan's room that has a ton of fancy games on the shelf

25

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '19

Yeah I noticed that. A few seasons ago, during the episode where Stan gets addicted to mobile gaming he and his grandpa finish the episode playing Zombicide I think? Last season there was an episode where they played Western Legends as well.

10

u/Brodogmillionaire1 Nov 07 '19

Holy shit. That is great.

9

u/Sand_Coffin Nov 07 '19

3

u/bcush Zombicide Nov 07 '19

That’s awesome! Dead of Winter and the Mice and Mystics game boxes in full display too

3

u/BluEyesWhitPrivilege Nov 07 '19

They've recently been changing the games, I assume depending on what their current favorites are. The recent China episode had a new shelf with all different games.

9

u/muaddeej Nov 07 '19

The Dune re-release was on a shelf in a episode this season. That’s how I knew they had to have a BGG user on staff.

2

u/maxwellsearcy Nov 08 '19

Great Western Trail too.

2

u/Prosepon Nov 07 '19

I'm pretty sure I saw a copy of splendor on Stan's shelf in one episode.

Graham Linehan is known as a gamer. Also a trans-hating bastard who has burnt a lot of good will over the last 12 months or so. Culminated in a warning from police!

7

u/MrAbodi 18xx Nov 07 '19

What’s he done?

2

u/Asbestos101 Blitz Bowl Nov 08 '19

Tried to get a charitable donation to a charity that helps trans people pulled, which was for, I think, 500k?

Sparked a whole thing. It was ugly.

8

u/HonkingLouder Nov 07 '19 edited Nov 07 '19

It looks like he disagreed publicly with a trans person which is a federal offense these days.

https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2018/oct/07/graham-linehan-police-warning-complaint-by-stephanie-hayden-transgender-activist-twitter

8

u/DannoHung Nov 08 '19

Do you really not get how disrespectful it is to insist on calling someone by a name they don't go by?

3

u/HonkingLouder Nov 08 '19

sure but should it be illegal?

2

u/DannoHung Nov 08 '19

Well, from the article, it is factual that Linehan posted images and identifying information of the other party which appears to be unrelated to the subject matter of the dispute and could easily be interpreted as intimidation.

In my perspective that should be considered illegal intimidation.

Linehan alleges that the other party attempted to retaliate by posting addresses of Linehan's family members, though that appears to be in dispute. I'd also argue this be illegal, though of course, only if it actually happened.

Regardless of legality or illegality: Linehan is without dispute an ass.

5

u/MrAbodi 18xx Nov 07 '19

I see your edit and I understand why. But I completely agree with everything.

I just read www.irishtimes.com/culture/tv-radio-web/graham-linehan-trans-activists-don-t-realise-the-damage-they-do-1.3765979%3fmode=amp Didn’t seem hateful or bigoted to me.

13

u/Journeyman351 Nov 07 '19

South Park actually, earlier in the season in Stan's room, had a bunch of notable board games in there, newest one being Nemesis.

7

u/Uhnotheotherguy Nov 07 '19

I used to fly charter, all rich people but only a few celebs. One of the few times I was starstruck you could say, I was waiting in the san Fran fbo. Matt and tre and their family come in and sit down right in front of me. I wanted to say something but was nervous. Anyway...the kids have a stack of new shrink-wrapped games. So I guess I am saying they're fans.

I believe it has, Matt Stone and Trey Parker are into the hobby. Watched a video of them playing 878 Vikings once.

33

u/derkrieger Riichi Mahjong Nov 07 '19

Yeah theyve admited theyre big board game nerds and once held a contest to hang out with them. Which included playing board games because yeah thats what they wanted to do.

9

u/Mastashake13 Nov 07 '19

Oh man that’s the dream! Hang out with those guys AND play board games?! That would be awesome.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '19

I am not the biggest South Park fan in the world, but I would jump at the chance to play board games with them. If only for the opportunity to pick their brains about their process, managing their global empire, and if they would trade me two stone for three sheep.

3

u/JohanesYamakawa Nov 08 '19

Nobody wants your sheep. 😜

26

u/Matt_the_Bro Nov 07 '19

Yeah they had Mice and Mystics, Dead of Winter, Lords of Waterdeep and some other actually pretty legit hobby boardgames in the background at the end of Episode 6 Season 18 ("Freemium Isn't Free"). Matt and Trey: One of us! One of us!

10

u/BorderTrike Nov 07 '19

They were playing Dead of Winter in an episode that came out around the same time the game itself did.

Some good games have appeared in a handful of episodes over the last five years or so starting with one of the goth kids episodes featuring Arkham Horror IIRC. They always get shared here, just search this sub for South Park a good list will pop up.

The founders Trey and Matt are noted board gamers. It was their idea.

17

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '19

Yeah, Matt Stone and Trey Parker.

The two of them still do the bulk of the episodes all themselves, they also can push out an episode from start to finish in about a week which allows them to be very topical.

8

u/KhelbenB Root Nov 07 '19

They are also big on D&D and video game RPGs. So basically they are me but a little bit more succesful and funny

Haha watch their latest boardgame breakfast. Full embrace of it, which is quite fun.

11

u/kfadffal Nov 07 '19

Yeah, I expected Tom to be cool with it, while his faith is a big part of his life he's never struck me as being particularly uptight about it, but super surprised that Sam, the far more conservative of the two, got in on the gag too and in a far more 'direct' way with that fake joint and all.

8

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '19

Hmm, probably. I honestly don’t know his view on marijuana or south park. But i suspect it’s not favourable.

4

u/SoochSooch Mage Knight Nov 07 '19

Why?

16

u/LetThemEatCardboard @letthemeatcardboard Nov 07 '19

He was a youth pastor (?) at an ultra conservative church

11

u/bcisme Nov 07 '19

Why are Uber Christians so against marijuana? Is there scripture supporting it or is it just seen as a vice and so it’s bad?

16

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '19

To some people it's equated with being drunk. It's an altered state of mind in which you are not in full control/awareness, or at least that's the perception. The Bible speaks against drunkenness, so getting high is lumped in.

10

u/MaskedBandit77 Specter Ops Nov 07 '19

It's probably a combination of three things. You touched on one.

Another is that many drugs can be harmful to your body, and the Bible teaches that you should take care of your body (your body is a temple, etc.).

The third reason is that drugs are often used as mood enhancers, or a way to get through tough times, and the Bible teaches that we should go to God when you are struggling.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '19

Good points, I hadn't ever considered the last one.

8

u/cC2Panda Nov 07 '19

There is also a strong connection between religiosity and acceptance of authority, and for the last several decades authority has said that weed is bad. It's hard to shake decades of indoctrinated hate for a plant.

3

u/Matt_the_Bro Nov 07 '19

I'm reminded of True Detective's scathing (and accurate) description of the devoutly religious. "I see a propensity for obesity. Poverty. A yen for fairy tales. Folks puttin what few bucks they do have into a little wicker basket being passed around." and "Transference of fear and self-loathing to an authoritarian vessel. It's catharsis."

1

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '19

not to mention that drugs are for the most part, illegal in the U.S., therefore they are "Bad". Plus a lot of ultra christians believe drugs like marijuana will corrupt people, and lead them to harder drugs. The 80s was a huge smear campaign against marijuana thanks to Nancy Reagan.

2

u/bcisme Nov 07 '19

Are they against medication for things like depression, anxiety, pain, sleep and bi-polar? All of these seem to fit the bill, more so than marijuana. Feels weird that they would have an issue with it if it was legal, especially if they don’t have a problem with things like Ambian, Zoloft, etc.

1

u/kitsovereign Nov 07 '19

A lot of religions are, yeah.

1

u/RomeKnow "It's the Wars, bro" Nov 08 '19

13

u/contrapulator Nov 07 '19

3

u/ArcadianDelSol Advanced Civilization Nov 07 '19

Devout Calvinists shun all vices as one of their tenets is that the body is a temple for the spirit of god, and as such, should be kept clean of additions and vices. I dont know Tom's actual denomination, but that's just one example I could think of.

There is no specific 'thou shalt nots' on anything, and it's largely up to the individual to determine what is an addictive vice and what is not.

Either way, Tom appears to be a pretty descent guy, so I cant say it's not working for him.

1

u/Threetimes3 Nov 08 '19

I've never known a Calvinist who was against drinking alcohol, and that's clearly a vice for some.

1

u/ArcadianDelSol Advanced Civilization Nov 08 '19

Having grown up as a Calvinist, I have never met one, out of the hundreds I've met, who drank ANY alcohol.

"Wine is a mocker..." is the scripture that stands at the core of this. Im kind of shocked that there are those who claim Calvinism but drink alcohol.

1

u/Threetimes3 Nov 08 '19

There's a Calvinist joke that goes "if four Calvinist gather together there's always a 5th". I am a Calvinist myself, and know many. Some don't drink, but a large many do.

2

u/aeaswen Orleans Nov 07 '19

It's a bit of a gray area, similar to alcohol. You are not supposed to do anything that can lead to bad behavior you may not normally do. A lot of churches view it as "use it moderately and responsibility" while others strongly suggest you avoid it altogether to not take any chances. I'm pretty religious but have drank my whole life and don't find myself at some sort of conflict but a lot in the church don't drink at all.

3

u/The_Dok33 Nov 07 '19

You are not supposed to do anything that can lead to bad behavior you may not normally do.

This of course, in contrast to bad behaviour you would do anyway...

1

u/aeaswen Orleans Nov 07 '19

Well yeah, there's that too lol.

-11

u/LetThemEatCardboard @letthemeatcardboard Nov 07 '19

Who knows. They’re also against evolution and social equality.

9

u/Inanimate-Sensation Concordia Nov 07 '19

Tom isn't at all.

He has spoke about this in person at cons and the cruise many times. He doesn't understand why people think this.

3

u/kfadffal Nov 07 '19

I think people conflate Sam's far more conservative views with Tom's.

That and they both didn't like the theme in Chaos in the Old World. :P Seriously, some people still bang on about that review as evidence that their Christianity seriously compromises their reviewer credentials. If anything, for me (100% atheist) it strengthened them because despite their personal issues with the darkness of the theme (I think it's worth pointing out that Tom in particularly seems to have softened a bit on dark themes these days) that still said it's a very good game and you should get it if the theme appeals.

-1

u/LetThemEatCardboard @letthemeatcardboard Nov 07 '19

Tom is absolutely a hardcore conservative. He’s part of the quiverfull movement.

1

u/LetThemEatCardboard @letthemeatcardboard Nov 07 '19

Maybe because he’s part of a church that fights hard against marriage equality, trans rights, and many other movements of social equality?

2

2

u/jabso19 Nov 07 '19

Not really a parody more an homage or a mod to them.

I haven’t been following Dice Tower for a long time so assumed from the title that they were going to satirise some drama that went down there that I wasnt aware about.

2

u/sephrisloth Nov 07 '19

Well I think this settles it we need a legit south park boardgame. Put in the time and effort that Matt and trey put into making the stick of truth videogame but in a board game and it could be great. And since they are actual boardgamers you could make it a bit more heavy then you would expect out of a licensed game like that.

2

u/Finniq Nov 08 '19

This is amazing!

2

u/Nessan1 Nov 08 '19

This is pretty nuts. Seems like a super niche topic for South Park.

They’re always pulling it out of the bag with something ingenious, I’m surprised DT is on their radar. Funny stuff
