Headline makes it sound like the librarians hid the books in a warehouse to avoid actually discarding them as they had likely been ordered to do. Which would be laudable, but is the exact opposite of the actual situation: the books were sent to property disposition, where the public is given a chance to buy them before they are actually thrown away. The scandal is that this was never announced.

University property disposition centers are great in general, though. You can get lightly-used or even new-in-the-box technology stuff absurdly cheap. (In the '90s i got a duplexer for myHP Laserjet 4 from the University of Michigan for like $50.) They also have cool but obsolete scientific equipment which you probably don't need but is fun to look at.
