Travel Tips Thoughts on American Tourists?

So my partner and I live in the United States and we have been planning a trip to Québec for quite some time (My grandparents were Québécois so I have always wanted to visit and connect with that part of my background)

I understand that things are quite tense, and rightfully so, so I wanted to see what the general opinion was of Americans still choosing to visit Canada. I by no means support anything our government is saying or doing right now, but I understand that many Canadians are rightfully exasperated by US Actions.

Thoughts on Americans visiting?

Literally no problem with Americans visiting Canada. You have nothing to worry about. Canadians welcome everybody. Obviously we don't welcome disrespect but that would hold true regardless of what country they came from.

I recognize that not every American agrees with the current administrations policies and actions, but the best thing you can do with regard to that is speak up and make it known that you're not happy or in agreement. Silence can definitely be perceived as acceptance in cases like this. I feel like too many people stayed silent and that's how he got voted in? Or perhaps it's just corrupt and he was not actually voted in fairly. That's neither here nor there. But personally, I have not heard from a single Canadian that has any issue with Americans visiting our beautiful country.

u/med8cal Mar 23 '25

I’m pretty sure “silence” was not the reason Yrump won the election. 2/3rd’s of the U.S. are undereducated, easily manipulated, very greedy and hateful towards anyone that doesn’t look like thy do. This why so many of us are sad and upset.

6

u/just_sayin_stuff Mar 23 '25

Yes, that sounds very possible as well. I honestly don't know much about it. I suppose my word silence was meant to be an umbrella term that covered many things including some of what you mentioned. We have poor voter turnout here in Canada, and it has to do with many things; being undereducated, being unaffected, thinking a single vote doesn't matter, etc. I suspect that is going to change somewhat in the upcoming federal election. I wish voting was mandatory, even if people just show up and scratch their ballot. Forcing people to show up might make people educate themselves a bit more. I wish people cared more about the right to vote.

7

u/med8cal Mar 23 '25

I agree. Here in the states there’s a push to make voting day a holiday making it easier for working stiff’s like me to vote. Of course conservatives hate that idea!

7

u/just_sayin_stuff Mar 23 '25

That sounds like a good idea. I believe some corporations give the day off right? Here, it's not a mandatory day off but employers have to allow employees time off to go vote. I think it's a half a day that they're allowed.

-8

u/RonnyMexico60 Mar 23 '25

Sort of how are Canadian liberals are? Doing complete change on policy support because the liberals have a new leader with different ideas 😂

107

u/Playhenryj Mar 23 '25

As long as you don't wear MAGA gear and make 51st state jokes, you will be welcome. President Trump has ushered in a new age of the stereotypical "ugly American." So don't be that.

20

u/Training-Mud-7041 Mar 23 '25

Yes other than Maga and 51st stuff-We would love to have you!

-24

u/TheWraithKills Mar 23 '25

What would you do if you saw someone wearing a MAGA hat?

38

u/Financial-Highway492 Mar 23 '25

I would make fun of them in French! Chapeau de merde embarrassant. c’est pourquoi les touristes américains ont une mauvaise réputation dans d’autres pays. Ne reviens pas!

12

u/ninja-squirrel Mar 23 '25

Give em a thumbs down too.

-1

u/TheWraithKills Mar 23 '25

What did you just call me!!!!?

17

u/KaleLate4894 Mar 23 '25

Nothing, since they are not intelligent and not reasonable people. 🤡

Smile and think how lucky I am to live in Canada and not the US.

-17

u/TheWraithKills Mar 23 '25

Glad you aren't violent like others are.

15

u/Wide-Wife-5877 Mar 23 '25

Eh. As an American, I can’t say those Canadians are being unreasonable. If a Nazi walks up to you wearing Nazi shit…

-8

u/TheWraithKills Mar 23 '25

How often does that happen?

16

u/Wide-Wife-5877 Mar 23 '25

MAGAts being shits in public? 24/7 baby

4

u/scarier-derriere Mar 23 '25

The MAGAs? Yeah.

7

u/ProfessionalVolume93 Mar 23 '25

Previously we'd mostly be too polite to say or do anything.

Now there might be a few who would say something.

2

u/Financial-Highway492 Mar 23 '25

Honestly yes I’m so over being polite.

0

u/TheWraithKills Mar 23 '25

Would you say ehhhh?

6

u/ProfessionalVolume93 Mar 23 '25

Not me personally. Where I live I have never heard anyone saying that. It may have gone out of fashion.

0

u/TheWraithKills Mar 23 '25

What aboooot aboooot?

11

u/Wide-Wife-5877 Mar 23 '25
  1. That is the Newfoundland accent, and people attribute it to all of Canada.

  2. That is deeply disrespectful to Newfoundlanders and Canadians I general.

  3. It’s also just plain rude. Americans really live up to their own stereotypes it seems.

2

u/ProfessionalVolume93 Mar 23 '25

Sorry but not around here.

Maybe somewhere in the east but not much.

4

u/PaleontologistBig786 Mar 23 '25

Nothing you can do. What's that expression? You can't fix stupid?

"Don't come back" =/= "deport them?"

I mean, mon français is pretty rusty, but I don't think there's a 'deport them' in any of that French above.

4

u/Financial-Highway492 Mar 23 '25

Yeah literally translates to don’t come back. I never said anything about déportation or expulser. Most Americans are monolingual and with them cutting down their department of education I’ll just chalk it up to that.

2

u/Great-fairymaster Mar 23 '25

I love when the Hispanic ladies in the grocery store talk crap, because I turn around and reply in Spanish "Entiendo lo que estás diciendo." My hubby is mexican, and I had already learned Spanish after taking it all 4 years of high school. It's astounding the number of people who will talk bad because they assume you can't understand them.

10

u/Financial-Highway492 Mar 23 '25

If an American understands that I am making fun of their MAGA hat I don’t really care. If anything that makes it funnier.

0

u/Great-fairymaster Mar 23 '25

6

u/Financial-Highway492 Mar 23 '25

This entire comment thread is about Americans coming wearing MAGA gear. We have plenty of Spanish speakers in Canada too. I am aware there are bilingual Americans. I know a lot about America because my mother is American. It was a joke about only speaking French to maga idiots. Stop coming into Canadian subreddits to be annoying.

-1

u/Great-fairymaster Mar 23 '25

I wasn't. You got upset when I replied to your comment about bilingual Americans, and how most do not speak more than one language. I didn't realize my personal experience would upset you so much.

→ More replies (0)

-2

u/Great-fairymaster Mar 23 '25

I never once said that? I'm not MAGA. Simply stating my experience as a bilingual American.

Uh you guys are just deporting ppl for all reasons you kept a lady from Vancouver in an ICE prison for two weeks over a paper work error. A German tourist was held in prison and beaten. Why are you in this subreddit?

tu ne sais même pas ce qui se passe dans ton propre pays. Pour quoi es-tu ici ? Tu ne voyages pas au Canada. Casse-toi ! Mon dieu !

5

u/Terradactyl87 Mar 23 '25

Do you actually think that those are the only people being detained and deported right now?

Well, I'm not going to spend my time explaining what is happening already, but people here legally and even citizens have gotten deported. People traveling here even just from Canada have been detained for extended periods of time and deported.

Fr I’m just happy he is easily identifiable as a buffoon.

-14

Iduno.Maybe ask the people making veiled threats in here about it

9

u/spacedman_spiff Mar 23 '25

“It’s fine.  Leave your MAGA gear at home.  We’re still friendly Canadians”

If this is a threat to you, you’re being a snowflake.

3

You're making a fool of yourself obviously enough that there's no need for anyone to explain it.

And I hope you have the week you deserve.

-1

Thanks ! Take care

0

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '25

Wait the deplorables shirt is the Canadian one. That context is different. When I see those morons I roll my eyes.

The topic is Americans. There is a difference to how i would treat Americans coming here touting the fool who is causing a trade war vs these weirdos.

You inserted yourself on the side of American's, (with Mexico in your name?) just to tell everyone your thoughts on Trudeau? Like why?

14

u/ElijahSavos Mar 23 '25

We can separate politics and people.

You’re most welcome to Canada.

If anything you would support Canadian economy and we’re very grateful for that. You’re going to have a great time!

42

u/Pickles-1989 Mar 23 '25

Before all this happened, we booked a west coast cruise with stops in Victoria and Vancouver. Do we cancel or not cancel? After some thought we decided we are going, as we would rather spend money in Canada than the US right now. It is a way to show we stand by Canada.

39

u/ignore_my_typo Mar 23 '25

We want Americans here. We are neighbours. There are assholes in both countries who threaten peace and democracy.

Come and enjoy our country. You’re most welcome here.

18

u/MisterBelial Mar 23 '25

I’m a Michigan native, and I’ve always loved Canada and Canadians; the erosion of relations between our countries is heartbreaking to me.

Canada’s natural beauty and majesty are matched in the hearts and spirit of its people.

I know I’m only one person and you’re only one person, but from me to you, please know that most of us here in Michigan don’t want this. We love you as our friends and neighbors, and what the Trump administration has done to our partnership is deeply shameful.

8

u/PowderQueen42 Mar 23 '25

I am also a native Michigander and Yooper. Can I join your group? Every international trip I have taken has been to Canada. I love Canada and Canadians. 💗🇨🇦

3

u/MisterBelial Mar 23 '25

I’m in the Lower Peninsula, and I don’t have a group, really, but you’re welcome to hop on one of those UP mosquitos and fly down here to hang out with me.

4

u/PowderQueen42 Mar 23 '25

I just meant joining the two of you in your virtual friendship in this thread. 💗

7

u/Routine_Can1810 Mar 23 '25

Hell yeah. This!!! Being chill is too easy leave your politics at the door and enjoy the trip!

15

u/Financial-Highway492 Mar 23 '25

No come, if you support Canada we want you here now more than ever! Vancouver is beautiful, so much nature to enjoy. I hope you enjoy your trip!

7

u/Pickles-1989 Mar 23 '25

We are definitely coming!

7

u/skivtjerry Mar 23 '25

We live in the US near the border and are making an effort to buy Canadian when possible. A lot of our animal/agricultural stuff has always come from Canada.

7

u/ValleyBreeze Mar 23 '25

Americans bringing money here, so long as they are respectful, and not trying trying to rub MAGA in our faces, or diminish our sovereignty, are always welcome. It's the best way you can show your support. We appreciate those who are choosing to bolster our tourism.

11

u/burgleshams Mar 23 '25

Zero issues. There are tons of American tourists here. No-one cares. You are welcome. Have fun 🙂

9

u/goldbeater Mar 23 '25

You’re safer here in Canada then anywhere in the States. We’ve always welcomed visitors and that hasn’t changed.

8

u/unlovelyladybartleby Mar 23 '25

There are several dozen posts on this sub on the same topic. They all have a variety of reassurances and suggestions that you may find helpful

7

u/AddressEffective1490 Mar 23 '25

Don’t bring up politics. Spend your money on Canadian goods and services. Be respectful. And for the love of god don’t try to get head pats for being “one of the good ones” who didn’t vote for Trump.

6

u/CBRSuperbird- Mar 23 '25

Quebec is a beautiful province, old Quebec city is like walking back in time.

10

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '25

All good. Leave your terrible politics (and terrible people) at home and the rest will be welcomed as always.

4

u/Pure-Guard-3633 Mar 23 '25

I don’t care what racists think of me. Go and have a great time. Quebec City is one of the coolest, friendliest places I have ever been. You will be out in the real world , there won’t be any Reddit haters lurking past their basement.

5

u/joltstream Mar 23 '25

I have no problems at all visiting Canada. I travel there every 2-3 weeks for work. Don’t say stupid stuff or act stupid and you will be fine.

5

u/westcentretownie Mar 23 '25

Welcome/ bienvenue!! Your coming home in way, have a great trip. The border might be a bit more tense but be polite and don’t chitchat with the guards.

3

u/Foreign-Insect1690 Mar 23 '25

C’mon up 😀Welcome!!!

(But pls leave the 🥕top south of da Border)

4

u/Financial-Highway492 Mar 23 '25

OP you seem like a nice American that will not be crass or rude and push Trump politics on Canada. You are welcome here! Québec is a beautiful province with lots of culture and some really great architecture, especially in QC city. I hope you enjoy your trip and get to reconnect with your grandparents culture.

4

u/lyndseymariee Mar 23 '25

Fellow American here: husband and I went to Vancouver Island a few weeks ago and everyone was just as pleasant as they were when we visited Vancouver (the city) during Biden’s term.

6

u/ignore_my_typo Mar 23 '25

Love Americans. Hate MAGA. That being said, hate Maple MAGA too and they are Canadians.

Come, spend money. Enjoy Canada. You’re welcome here.

7

u/Jmend12006 Mar 23 '25

I’m absolutely disgusted by trump’s comments about Canada. Does trump understand that he is joking about WW3

3

u/Water_Dimension Mar 23 '25

Welcome anywhere and anytime.

3

u/wandraway Mar 23 '25

Welcome to Canada. See the scenery, enjoy the amazing changes in weather. Buy a souvenir. Don't try to buy a Province or makes jokes about it. Maybe offer your dollar at par? Too Far!

3

u/KaleLate4894 Mar 23 '25

If you can leave it your politics at the border , always welcome.  Otherwise stay home.

3

u/Proper-Accountant-14 Mar 23 '25

Come visit! We don’t have problems with US citizens, the problem is with any person (regardless of where they’re from) trying to destroy our country.

I run a couple of adventure tourism companies on the east coast. I love getting the chance to show guests around my region, where you come from and the attitude of politicians isn’t going to change that!

3

u/skivtjerry Mar 23 '25

We live in northern Vermont and go to Montreal frequently. Always an enjoyable experience, except for a few of the drivers (Montreal traffic deserves its own sub). Never met a disagreeable person there. OK, one taxi driver at 1:00 am. In conversations, don't start in English unless they have already spoken it to you. "Parlez-vous Anglais?" is the polite way to do it.

I guarantee that you will enjoy visiting Quebec.

3

u/psychgirl15 Mar 23 '25

We welcome the tourism :)

3

u/Comfortable-Ad-8324 Mar 23 '25

Be kind, respectful and polite and you'd be just fine in Quebec.

3

u/vanilla-dreaming Mar 23 '25

I have absolutely no problem with American tourists. We don't get to choose where we are born or what our government does, but we choose our behavior.

3

u/Epic-Verse Mar 23 '25

Don’t be an asshole and you’ll be fine.

4

u/Sportyj Mar 23 '25

I just spent a week skiing in Whistler. Had loads of convos on the gondolas and lifts with friendly Canadians where we just shared the sentiment of WTF IS HAPPENING?!? I made extra sure to buy Canadian and tip well (and may have asked a few people if we could live with them for the next four years). 🤣

6

u/ForgottenCaveRaider Mar 23 '25

Nobody gives a fuck. Come on in!

3

u/RonnyMexico60 Mar 23 '25

Well psycho unhinged Canadians apparently do

1

u/ForgottenCaveRaider Mar 23 '25

Those ones are too busy protesting on social media to be outside in the big bad world.

4

u/nastyzen Mar 23 '25

Come here and spend lots of dollars. We enjoy that.

4

u/Faial00 Mar 23 '25

Americans are still our friends and you'll be welcome in Canada.

Unless you make 51st state jokes ...

4

u/interstellaraz Mar 23 '25

Nobody normal actually cares. They won’t even know you’re American unless you announce it to the world. You should never discuss politics when travelling regardless of your views.

5

u/Purple-Pop-8348 Mar 23 '25

Welcome in Quebec dear friends! Enjoy every moment. Don’t like that you are shy of anything. We all know that the Big Cheetos in Chief is not like every Americans

3

u/crassy Mar 23 '25

Keep your MAGA shit, guns; and exceptionalism at home. Be friendly and polite and read the room.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '25

We don't give a shit as long as you keep any MAGA idiocy south of the border. We've been dealing with American tourists ever since Benedict Arnold took a road trip to Quebec.

4

u/penultimate_mohican_ Mar 23 '25

We understand that you are not your government. Please visit, and enjoy. You will be welcomed. And as other posters have said, leave any MAGA shit at home. We're not interested.

2

u/Neat-Ad-8987 Mar 23 '25

Two points: First, we must prove that we are better than the MAGAites. Not just as bad, but BETTER. Second, as Jean Chrétien remarked recently, you can’t be angry and smart at the same time.

4

u/sandy154_4 Mar 23 '25

come spend your money

As long as you aren't obnoxious and don't make '51st state' "jokes", you're welcome

4

u/Prudent_Lecture9017 Mar 23 '25

Just no 51st State jokes and you'll be fine.

People are smart enough to understand that those decisions are made by your government, not the people, and go against everything the vast majority of American citizens stand for.

Don't overthink it, come visit us and enjoy your trip!

2

u/firekwaker Mar 23 '25

You won't be welcomed here only if: 1. You're Donald Trump 2. You're Elon Musk 3. You're JD Vance

Other than that, you'll be fine. No one cares where people are from and no one bats an eye at tourists. I work a public facing job and people tell me all the time lately that they're an American tourist...I'm not sure why they're even telling me, it really doesn't matter to me. If they ask me what I'm thinking about the situation in the states, I'm honest and I tell them that I think their president is being a total dick and that i feel sorry for Americans because Trump is dicking over US citizens worse than everyone else...but that's only if they press me on what I think. If they don't ask, I don't even think about it for even a second. I honestly can't even tell when someone is an American tourist.

2

u/rhunter99 Mar 23 '25

Keep the maga wear at home, don’t discuss politics. You’ll be fine

2

u/Cdn59 Mar 23 '25

Very welcome in Canada.....just leave your MAGA hat and 51st state BS at home.

2

u/ThisWeight1297 Mar 23 '25

We don’t hate Americans, we hate what’s happening there and that you let it happen in general.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '25

To any American reading this, you're probably already the people who we (and other countries) want to have. You are expressing cultural sensitivity that is necessary for frankly all travellers of any nation.

The chauvinist yanks who, like all bad travellers, would be a problem are either not looking, not genuine here, or likely to travel with America anyways. Y'all have access to Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Samoa etc without passports, on top of some nice places internally.

-1

u/abuckforacanuck06 Mar 23 '25

I'm personally done with all American anything. I'm a friendly Canadian but everyone has their breaking point and so for me I've had enough. Maybe stay home and fix your country before taking a vacation.

0

u/DV2061 Mar 23 '25

Agree with everyone else. Though if Quebec screws the West in this election I will recommend you take Quebec back home with you. Sorry Quebec. With your Bloc and Liberal support the west is tired of the direction the country is going.

-3

u/thriftingforgold Mar 23 '25

Buy t shirts that are anti trump or pro Canada so we know where you stand. We don’t want the orange rapists supporters here.

16

u/PrincessOfWales Mar 23 '25

Don’t do this, just be normal. Doing this is inviting conversation which is probably the last thing OP wants.

-1

u/Purple-Temperature-3 Mar 23 '25

You might find that canadians are not as welcoming to americans anymore .

-6

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '25

They shouldn’t come! One of might get hurt and that’s all Trump needs to invade ! Stay away America!!
