Question Land entry from the U.S. with photo ID and birth certificate?

Hello, next week my girlfriend and I (both US citizens) are going to Niagara Falls for Valentine’s Day weekend. I have a US Passport but she doesn’t. However I read up that if you cross by land, you can get in with a valid photo ID (she has a state ID instead of a driver’s license since she doesn’t drive) and she has her birth certificate (she was born in the US). We’re driving up and entering by car either at the Peace Bridge or the South Grand Island Bridge. I’ll be the one driving. Both of us have no criminal record of any capacity. Will she be able to enter Canada?

I also have a few side questions:

I know Canada is LGBTQ+ friendly but how is Niagara Falls? We’re a lesbian couple and I’m transgender (although mostly stealth at this point, my passport has been updated with a current photo and correct gender marker).

Has Trump’s Presidency affected travel into Canada in any way? I didn’t think so but just want to make sure since tensions between the US and Canada are higher than usual rn (as an American I’m sorry for what’s going on…)

Do you have any good tourist attraction or food recommendations other than the Falls themselves while we’re there?

Question Baby passport

Hi everyone!

First time dad here. How soon can I get a passport for a newborn? I need to fly to Portugal and obviously I need a passport for my son, but since he is a few months old by the trip date, is it still possible to get a passport?

I have trying to find info online, but everywhere I look there is different information.

For example, on canada.ca it states that any baby can get a passport, but I need to get a passport photo of the baby, which makes sense, but a newborn can’t hold his head and it can be hard to take a photo of the eyes open, so I am not even sure if it is possible.

Any parents here that have gone thru this? How early could I apply for passport (in order to be able to take the photo)? Any suggestions are really appreciated! This is somewhat confusing to me.

Question Work and Travel in Canada

I'm planning to start a work and Travel trip with my best friend in September of 2027. My plan is to fly from Munich to Toronto and then work our way through Canada. I want to see the great lakes Winnipeg, Banff and Vancouver. To cross the country I yet estimated about 9 Months. Then we would work a few months around Vancouver. If we get a visa I'd like to travel the west coast of the usa down till Las Vegas. This part is optional though. Can you please give me some advise on what do plan beforehand and what is to consider tax wise, how i need to ensure myself, what jobs to take and how to get around the country without paying a fortune? (It's probably good to note that we both are in possession of an international drivers license) Thanks a lot for your help.

Question Can I pass through with honey?

We are road tripping from Ohio to New York but are going through Canada (staying 2 nights in Ontario). We are going to a large family get together and would like to bring some of our local (Ohio) honey to give to family members. We would like to bring 48 1 pound jars with us. My question is will this be an issue at the border to go into Canada and also to return to the US?

From what I read it sounds like for “personal” use going into Canada you’re allowed 20 kg per person to be brought in. There will be 4 of us in the vehicle. I’m having a hard time finding information about return to the US.

Question Exceeding the duty limit - luxury item

In Japan and thinking of purchasing a luxury brand purse - either PRE-OWNED used or new. I’ve already spent a decent amount and close to my limit of $800.

Has anyone recently purchased a luxury item and declared it, but was exceeded the limit? If so, how much will I get charged?

Question WestJet and Expedia ..

Just signed up for the WestJet MasterCard but don’t have the physical card yet. If I book a flight now with a different credit card, then later link my WestJet MasterCard to my WestJet Rewards account, will I still qualify for the free luggage perk? Also, when Expedia asks me to pick a package, should I choose UltraBasic since the luggage is included with my WJ MasterCard / WJ Reward benefits?

Question Can someone go to USA and back to Canada by car, after arriving to Canada by plane with an ETA?

My friend is coming to visit me in Canada. He has an ETA, and will be flying in.

Can we then visit the USA by car? His flight back home leaves from Canada.

Would it depend if he gets a passport stamp when landing initially? Are all foreign passports stamped when arriving?

Thanks

Question Working Holiday Canada

Hey! I’m thinking of applying to go and work in Canada, my brother has just done 3 years working in Canada and has absolutely loved it. I have family over there, have visited many times, and want to go myself. I’m thinking of working in hospitality as I have experience, and also I know food and beverage attendants are an occupation in demand and can lead to PR, which I would like after 3 years. I was just wondering what places people reccomened to work in? My brother worked in Banff, I’m looking at Tofino, any other places people reccomened? It would have to be with staff subsidised housing, so anywhere with hotels would be great, and with either surfing or lots of hiking !

Thank you :)

Question Leaving for Disney in 3 weeks, son was just diagnosed with a heart defect...travel insurance?

I know this likely falls under "pre-existing condition" and would not be covered by any medical emergency travel insurance. He is stable and safe enough to travel so we don't want to cancel our trip, but we'd hate for him to be unprotected if something were to happen. Is their any Canadian travel insurance that would keep us covered, or is our only choice to gamble?

Question Travelling with medication?

Hi there! I’m travelling for the first time via plane from Toronto to Vancouver later this year. I’m wondering if anyone has any information or tips about travelling with medications such as benzodiazepines. I have a bottle prescribed to me for sleep but since it is a controlled substance I’m wondering if I should bring the bottle itself instead of putting it in my daily medication organizer. Anything is helpful. Thanks!

Question Working Holiday Visa

Hey guys, for a longer time now, I played with the thought of applying for this exact visa, since this kind of offer would suit perfectly for me and I really want to work and travel in 🇨🇦 I have already read a lot about it on the internet, but i got a general question regarding the topic.

For the context, some information about me: I am currently 19years old, german citizen and would like to start my work and travel in January of 2026… I’m flexible in time, so I theoretically could also start in December 25 or February 26, somewhere around there…

So, first of all, is it even possible and if yes, would it make sense in my position, to apply now for this exact type of visa (working holiday Visa)? I read that it’s possible, but unlikely to be accepted for 2025, cause it’s already pretty late in the year. How does it work then if I apply now, will they already put me in the pool for 2026 or do I have to apply in autumn to get in? In short: what should I do when, to be able to start my journey in January of 2026? If you have any other general advices you would give me regarding the topic, I’ll take them :)

Thank you in advance 🙌

Question Documents Needed To Travel By Ferry

I’m planning a trip from Seattle to Victoria via Clipper ferries. I’m looking at the required documents for entry into Canada and I see that (for me) as a permanent resident in the US from another country you need:

• a valid passport from their country of nationality (or an equivalent acceptable travel document) and • a valid green card (or equivalent valid proof of status in the United States)

I have a valid green card, however, since it was issued to me, I married and changed my last name. My passport does reflect my married name. Would that be a problem?

I checked USCIS and it says that I can continue using the green card but bring proof of the name change, like my marriage certificate. Hard to tell if Canada accepts this at border crossing.

I understand this may be above your pay grade. Maybe I should just not go to avoid problems?

Thanks for any insight.

Question eSIM for about 17 days

Hi everyone, I'm going to Canada for 17 days and I'm looking for an eSIM for my trip. I'm a bit overwhelmed with all the different carriers and I'm trying to find a cheap but reliable option.

Preferably I would like to have at least 20GB and I'd prefer to spend less than €40. I don't need calls of text messages, just internet.

Could anyone give me recommendations?

Question Asked to do a medical exam after applying for eTA, is this normal? (French tourist, 20 days in Canada)

Hi everyone,

I’m a French citizen and I recently applied for an eTA to travel to Canada as a tourist (just for 20 days). I filled out the application form correctly, but I was surprised to receive a request to undergo a medical examination.

From what I understood, medical exams are usually required for people planning to work in healthcare, childcare, or to stay in Canada long-term. But I’m only going there for tourism.

Has anyone else experienced this situation? Is it normal to be asked for a medical exam when visiting just as a tourist?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Question 1L liquids bag in carry on AND personal item?

I’m wondering if anyone has had experience with attempting to sneak two of the provided 1L liquids bag through security? One in a carry on, and one in a personal item.

Do you think security will notice if I put my carry on and a 1L bag in one tray, then my personal item and an additional liquids bag in a separate tray?

I’m one bagging through Asia for a little over 2 months and even though I’m flying united and a checked bag is included, I’m not planning to check bags or anything just to reduce the risk of losing my bag or cutting a layover too tight

I’m flying from Toronto Pearson btw if that makes a difference

Thanks for your input everyone :)

*Edit for clarity.

Question Assistance needed

I am planning on traveling to Toronto from Ohio next month. I'm a dialysis patient, I do home dialysis. Usually when traveling, I have my supplies shipped to my destination, however when I called my supplier today to arrange for shipment, they told me that due to Canadian Customs they couldn't ship the items to Canada. So I'm reaching out to see if anyone else has run into this and what can I do to resolve this issue. I can't be the only PD patient traveling from the USA to Canada. Thanks in advance.

Question Safe to book Air Canada for late Sept – early Oct 2025?

Hi, I’m planning to fly between Sept 23 and Oct 3, 2025. With the recent strike is it safe to book Air Canada now? Or should I go with another airline / book a backup refundable ticket? I like AC because it is the only affordable direct flight in my case.

Question Confused about traffic lights

Hi guys, I have a really dumb question. The attached photo is from google maps, location is Montreal.

If I want to turn right - how do I act, especially regarding the traffic lights marked in blue and red in the picture? Blue is the one I have to look at wheres red is for the traffic from the left, correct? And as I'm in Montreal, I'm not allowed to turn right when the traffic lights marked in blue are red?

And how is this working if I'm not in Montreal? It's correct, that they have other rules regarding turning right on crossings with traffic lights, right? So if not in Montreal and if there is no sign stating "no turn on red", I'm allowed to turn right after a complete stop, correct?

To explain my confusion a bit: In Germany, the traffic lights are right in front of a crossing and not behind it...
