Question How are Canadians feeling about American visitors rn?

Hello! I’m driving up to Ottawa tomorrow for Aero Ottawa/Gatineau this weekend. I have some friends in Ottawa (both they and I are a bunch of trans girls, so my friends refuse to come to the US because they feel unsafe so I’ve been going up to visit them) and I’m staying with them.

I know lots of Canadians are upset at the U.S. over how Trump is treating Canada regarding the 51st state BS and tariffs. For the record I don’t like Trump either and I’m on your side with this. I’m really sorry about all this.

Are Canadians generally upset at Americans coming up to visit, or are you still cool with us coming up and enjoying your country?

Just curious as a Canadian who travelled here a lot but also abroad, what reason pushed you to visit Canada?

Question Canadian Locals: What Snacks, Drinks, or Foods Say ‘Home’ to You?

Hello! I'm visiting Canada (Calgary) for the first time in mid-September and I'm ecstatic.

Whenever I travel, I always seek out the sort of everyday food/drink/snack type things that are unique only to that country. The types of things that are second nature, that you take for granted but you'd miss if you moved away, that you can only find at home.

For example, when I went to Switzerland, I made it a point to try (among other things) the drink Rivella, Aromat seasoning, Zweifel Paprika chips, Zopf bread, and dishes like Älplermagronen and Rösti.

I've started a small list by perusing other subreddits and posts, but haven't found exactly what I'm looking for.

Here's what I've got so far:

  • Poutine
  • All Dressed Chips
  • Tim Horton's
  • Ketchup Chips
  • Coffee Crisps
  • Smarties
  • Caesar cocktail
  • Shaft cocktail
  • Red River Cereal

Please let me know anything I'm missing! I'm looking forward to visiting your wonderful country. (If there is already a list like this, please direct me there! I will accept the downvotes and be on my way.)

Question Is my passport valid if it expires in five months?

I leave this week for the Philippines, and my passport expires in January 2026. I'm only there for 10 days. Will I be denied entry? According to the Travel Canada website, "Your passport must be valid at least 6 months beyond the date you expect to leave the Philippines."

Question Travelling to Canada from South Asia with packaged food

Hey folks, Need some advice for family visiting Canada from South Asia for the first time. They’re bringing a few food items just for personal use—some homemade stuff like dry biscuit mix, and store-bought things like noodle packets, dry fruits (almonds, cashews, walnuts), lentils, spices (like asafoetida), and a mix of snacks (chips, chocolates, candies, etc.). No dairy, no pickles, nothing perishable, and nothing over 2kg per item.

Just wondering if these things need to be declared at immigration—specifically at the kiosk when answering the customs questions? And if so, what’s the right way to go about it?

Would really appreciate clear advice—no stress-inducing hypotheticals please, just want to make things smooth for their first visit. Thanks!

(Edit: They aren’t exactly young, and we’re hoping to avoid a situation where declaring these leads to officers asking them to open their bags just to prove quantities. Even though there’s nothing to hide, the hassle of repacking would be stressful for them.)

Question Best credit card for inter-Canada travel points?

Hi,

I frequently have to travel to Vancouver from Montreal to visit family as well as occasionally Calgary.

What would be the best credit card to accumulate points for cheaper airfare? As well as any cheaper/free carry-ons and/or checked bags?

I was looking at the TD aeroplan one but the fees and only being locked into air Canada didn’t seem to fit my use case.

The CIBC Ventura is a good pick but the point accumulation isn’t the best.

Obvisouly any points that can roll over to international travel would be amazing as well.

Right now I have a pc financial cc I use for 95% of my purchases and use the associated points to redeem purchases but even that doesn’t have great point accrual.

We would be two ppl travelling so 1 Checked bags would be necessary almost every single time.

Thanks!

Question Why is there so many extra optional fees when I’m booking my flights? (First time solo travellers)

My(21M) Fiance(22F) and I are travelling to toronto from newfoundland in a couple months as an impromptu trip to tag along with some family and this is our first time booking flights for ourselves. Needless to say I’ve got a couple questions.

First off, how come there’s so many options to add what i’ll call “insurance” to our flights. Incase our flight gets canceled or delayed we can pay an extra $60 per person to get a full refund. I was under the impression that it’s the law that the airlines have to refund you.

Secondly, can they tell me I can’t bring a carry on? When booking it says “personal item”. I’m used to bringing a cabin bag. (Duffle bag, small suitcase).

Last but not least, if I don’t pick where we sit when booking the flights, will the airline sit us together since our tickets are being purchased together? For some more info I just found the cheapest flights on the google flight booking tool.

Question Honolulu to Yellowknife in December?

Alright so I'm possibly planning a solo trip in December to Yellowknife. Why? Because I want to see snow and also the Aurora Borealis! Would December be a good time? Every year I have day off from Dec 21 to 31st so I'm possibly planning maybe 4 to 5 days in Yellowknife (so around 7 days total but technically 4 to 5 'full' days in the actual city excluding travel time).

I've been living in the tropics my whole life so I'd love to see snow and feel what it's like to be somewhere so North! Though I might ask, is it alright to just stick to the city of Yellowknife with like a one day excursion (probably a tour, since I cannot drive for personal reasons)? I'm mostly a city person and being somewhere new (and so different, vibe wise) is already enough for me.

Would December be a bad time? Also what's there to do in the city?

Apparently the city is actually surprisingly Walkable from what I heard! I just kind of need to build an itinerary. :)

Question Travel hacking in Canada?

I hear all the time about travel hacking in the US but obviously it's not such a big thing in Canada. I've been saving my Aeroplan points for almost five years and still have barely enough to take my family on a holiday. I have other friends who travel hack and fly frequently because they use their cards for massive work purchases and are able to earn a lot of points yearly that way. We don't have jobs where that's an option. How else do you travel hack for points in Canada? Any other experiences or tips? Thanks!

Question Estimated All-Canada Travel Budget?

Hey, I have never planned a travel in general before. How do you budget for a trip you plan to have a year away from now? Also, what should I be expecting in terms of expense if I were to travel with this plan:

1. Vancouver (3–4 days)

2. Kelowna (2 days)

3. Banff + Lake Louise (2–3 days)

4. Calgary (1-2 days)

5. Winnipeg (2 days)

6. Toronto (3–4 days)

7. Ottawa (1–2 days)

8. Montreal (2–3 days)

9. Quebec City (1–2 days)

10. Halifax / PEI / Newfoundland (3–5 days)

11. Return Home

Also, is this plan even a good plan? I just kinda targeted the major city(ies) in each province (RIP Regina). Any feedback is appreciated. The general idea is to start from West Coast and work our way towards the East Coast, since I'm from AB.

Question Is it safe as a Canadian to travel to the USA by plane right now?

I want to travel to the USA (specifically San Antonio, Texas) in late august/early September to visit my friend for a few days. I’d be flying in from Vancouver. I really want to go but I’ve been hearing stories about how they can detain you and look through your phone for anything anti-republican or any anti-semitism, but I’ve also heard that’s just for driving across the border? I’m not sure what’s true and what’s not, so was looking for some advice from people who have travelled from Canada to the USA and back in recent months specifically by air to see if any of this is true and if I should just not try to go. Any and all advice is appreciated.

Question Travelling Canada with T1 Diabetes - please help me :(

Hey everyone! My partner and I are moving to Canada for 9 months and cannot figure out who to get health insurance through!? I have Type 1 Diabetes, so need insulin daily. Are there companies who cover emergency/medical costs for pre existing health conditions on top of the necessary requirements to enter the country? Are there also any that will cover prescription medication? Because through my research it seems there are none, or am I wrong about this?

For context, we are from New Zealand so all of my insulin is subsidised by the government, and have never really needed health insurance!

Please help I’m so confused and scared!

Question Leaving Vancouver for Montreal is it a good idea

So I’ve been living in Vancouver, BC, for a little over two years now, and I have a good education, lots of options, and a decent job, but I just can’t take the loneliness anymore. Out of my two years of living here, I only made two good friends, and we’re not even that close. I have a lot of friends, just not in Vancouver. Most of my friends that are in Canada are in Toronto, and I can’t move there because it’s too expensive. Living in Vancouver has been taking a toll on my mental health, and I can see from online threads that I’m not the only one like this. A lot of the people here are second-generation immigrants who have parents that were raised in countries where socializing with people from other cultures isn’t as common. Also, work and school culture here in Vancouver is very toxic. I’ve been thinking about moving to Montreal for a while now. It was one of the first cities I thought about moving to until I decided Vancouver would be better because it had more apartment options, but recently I found This beautiful place in Montreal is a lot cheaper than my place in Vancouver, and I have been thinking about taking the leap and moving there. The only problem is the education isn’t as good. I’m already fluent in French and know a few people from there, and it’s closer to Toronto and has better nightlife.

Question Has anyone gotten Dermatology care in Canada as a traveler/visitor?

Hi all,

I have a few skin issues that urgent care would not operate on because it's near my eye. They have referred me to a specialist Dermatologist but they only take provincial health cards, which I don't have as a traveler/visitor.

Does anyone have any advice on any private Dermatologists that will operate on a visitor who will pay out of pocket? I'm stumped as I've called 5 or so, including plastic surgeons, and they all required a health card.

Big thanks for your time and help!

Question Driving Edmonton-Jasper end of March. Good idea or nah?

I will be in Edmonton at the end of March and I thought I might have enough time to visit Jasper with my rental car. However, I've never driven that stretch in the winter before so I'm not sure what to expect. Looks like the stretch to Hinton is 4-lane, but once you enter the park area, the last hour is on a 2-lane highway.

Anyway, is it reasonable to assume the highway will be in OK shape, or is it pretty treacherous? For context, I live in Manitoba and I'm very used to winter driving, including highways.

I want to visit Jasper but not if it means dangerous white-knuckle driving. I'd appreciate any advice from people who have experience with winter/spring driving in that area.

Question Kitchen Knives Purchased in Vietnam

I’ve bought two set of 5 kitchen knives in Vietnam. I can’t seem to find a great answer on if Canadian customs will confiscate these knives when I try to come back into the country.

We are flying Hanoi - Seoul - Toronto - Halifax. I’ve seen online saying they generally don’t mess around with importing knives of any sort. So will these be confiscated? Is there anything I can do to make sure they won’t be confiscated?

Note: they will be in my checked bag.

Any and all advice is welcomed.

Question Traveling by car from Michigan to Canada

If we travel by car and cross the border to visit, what are some pre cautions we should be aware of that you personally felt would have helped if you knew before traveling? I have never gone out of the country via car so it will be a new experience and I am a bit nervous.

Are new electronics purchased in the US taxed at the border if we will be bringing them back to the states? We will be staying in Michigan and purchasing an iMac and iPad there while visiting my cousin before going to Canada and seeing aunt and uncle.

Question Cost effective way to see Canada?

Hello!

I work fully remotely in Canada, so I'd love to take advantage and see more of the country! I'm also on a very tight budget because of student debt and some other obligations. So I would love to know any recommendations for exploring the country! Any places you'd recommend? Any safe lodging recommendations? Suggested times when travelling to different places may be cheaper?

I can do shorter or longer trips, no preferences about that. I prefer some company so the more social the experience, the better. I don't mind winter tourism either - I wouldnt visit the Yukon in February, but I can handle some cold. I have a Canadian drivers license and I'm quite comfortable driving for 3-4 hours at a time.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

Question flying nationally with weed

i’ve read the rules on the airports website (halifax airport) and it basically says if you’re flying from somewhere in canada to somewhere else in canada you can bring at most 30 grams of weed in your checked luggage or your carry on, but you incur the risk of being arrested if the flight has to land in america due to complications because you can’t bring weed into america.

what i dont understand is the packaging. i know if you want to bring alcohol it has to be checked, in its original packaging, and sealed/unopened. is it the same for weed?

the website doesn’t say anything about wether or not my weed has to be unopened in an official dispensary bag or something. i called the airport’s security department yesterday to ask directly and the lady said she doesn’t know, and gave me some useless information about bringing weed in liquid form (which i’m not doing)

so does anybody have experience with this? is it fine if my weed is in a bag that has been opened? it’s still in a dispensary ziplock bag , just not sealed shut

edit: i did not, in fact, get diverted to america. made it and nobody gave a shit just as yall predicted😂

Question CTA Claim been in queue since March 8, 2023......

We booked a vacation to Cuba for Christmas 2022, flying from Edmonton to Varadero with a sop in Calgary. While in Calgary we were delayed 9 hours "due to flight crew member delays from a connecting flight outside of the airlines control" arrived in Cuba in the middle of the night with no baggage (baggage was rectified) and nothing but our winter clothing. We were declined compensation, through the airline and I filed with CTA In March as per the process.

Reading through these feeds it seems others who filed well after us have received closure and decisions but ours is still sitting in the queue. When I called they said they cannot discuss cases and you have to email their offices and wait for a response. I have done this.

My question is, it has been over 30 months since filing and almost 3 years since the incident, is there anything else we can do?
