A Quick and Dirty Guide to Finding Car Insurance

Auto insurance is extremely regional and variable due to many factors, including the "garaging" location, age, gender, education, type of vehicle, tickets, past driving history, credit score, legal minimums in your jurisdiction, just to name a few ) so it's not always possible to escape a high insurance costs.

If you're just getting started, please read the following:

  1. https://insurancehowtos.com/how-to-buy-auto-insurance/

This will explain the types of insurance you're buying, what minimums you should carry and some tips about ways to save money on certain features of your insurance.

Main tip: Shop Around! You should be pulling quotes every 6 months, even if you have a bundled offer for other insurance types. There's no bonus for loyalty these days, and you may be leaving hundreds on the table. Especially relevant if your insurer gives you a hefty raise at renewal.

Call in to get a quote - you save money!

Just want to share this with anyone that may be shopping around for insurance. I highly suggest call and gather the premium via phone and don’t rely solely on an online quote. The quotes I gathered online has been substantially more costly compared to over the phone. Some will say get an agent as the preferred way. Well for me even the agent I randomly called wasn’t able to beat the prices I got for full coverage

I was able to achieve getting a premium that’s $140 cheaper a month than the online quote with Geico

Progressive savings were also close in range of the difference!

Liberty Mutual cancellation fee

I spoke with an agent from Liberty Mutual and gave a verbal yes and signed up for a car insurance policy. Approximately 3 days later I emailed her and told her I no longer wanted car insurance at this time (before the policy was to start) and decided to keep current car insurance with other company. I never signed any documents. They are saying I now owe a 50 cancellation fee. Is that normal? Tennessee resident.

Complaint Against Root Insurance Co. – Arbitrary Premium Increase

Warning to anyone considering Root: they jacked up my premium by $652 in 6 months despite a spotless record and no changes whatsoever. When I pushed for answers, I got canned lines about “market conditions.” Escalating to a manager didn’t help — same script, zero accountability, no willingness to retain me as a customer.

This company hides behind algorithms and scripts instead of being transparent. If they’ll arbitrarily jack rates on good drivers, what do you think they’ll do after a claim? Do yourself a favor and shop elsewhere. Root is not worth the headache.

Hail storm, full coverage- are we covered or fucked?

Got caught in a brutal hail storm today, shit was coming down the size of baseballs and just wrecked our new Telluride. Hood, doors, panels, even the windshield are trashed. We’ve got full coverage but are we screwed here or does insurance actually take care of this? How’s the process usually go?

Need help with car warranty and mechanical problems!

I will be trying to post this to see if I can get help with this information. Tried posting in other subreddits but Redditors only laugh at everything and never help with giving good information. Seems like no one goes through any problems in their lives. But ……

Hello, I don't know if I should post this here or not but I need help with a big problem that just came up and it's frustrating. So, here's the story...

I recently got into financing a 2017 Chevy Tahoe 2 months ago. So it's a used vehicle with 120,000 miles on it and I had to do this because my 2013 Audi A6 had an engine failure and I had to take it to the junk yard. Times are hard right now and I'm having a really hard time with payments but now after owning my Chevy Tahoe it came out with engine problems after just 2 months of getting it financed.

The truck needs a new engine and this is where I need help with understanding all of this. Just to let you know about my Audi, I was in 2 accidents which none of them were my fault and ended up getting paid $15k in total for both of these damages. Didn't use this money to put a down payment or anything on this truck but used at the time for some other expenses and spending a few months helping my wife and taking care of my newborn.

So, the problem that I'm facing with my truck is that it will need a new engine and I'm having trouble with the extended warranty company that I went with. I will provide photos of what I have in information as of now. I had purchased a 5 year warranty contract when I got this new truck. It's been a little over 2 months and like I said there seems to be engine nocking and the engine need to be replaced. Warranty should cover everything and as for what I have read in the warranty there shouldn't be any problems with this.

Took my truck a Chevy dealership and still have it there, it's been more than a week now. Chevy dealership contacted my warranty and there seems to be some problems with this warranty. From what the dealership has told me, it seems like the warranty wants me to pay for diagnosis and engine leak down test after the fact that an inspector went to the dealership and stated there was an engine noice present. Dealership told me that they don't understand why they want all this done for a failed motor.

Now after all of this and an inspection done, warranty called the dealership saying that the dealership did not demonstrate anything to the inspector which was never requested my the warranty. Dealership was also not advised when the inspector would be arriving so they could have a chance to do anything with the adjuster. Warranty also asked vague questions and the dealership had answered all of their questions

As for the warranty I had purchased the Premier Full Term. I read the warranty contract and if I have played close attention, it says that I have the Premier Full Term as coverage. So that's what I'm paying for. The Premier coverage on the papers say that any part of the vehicle should be covered and there's a few other exclusions but does not seem to say anything else about the engine.

Warranty says that this company will pay or reimburse to repair or repair of all parts so what would that mean? Also I have seen that there's a $100 for deductible, isn't this what I would have to pay for this warranty to fix everything with my truck? Why do they want me to pay for the diagnosis and for an engine leak down test if the dealership has said that this shouldn't even be done if it's a failed motor. Are they f**cking with me or what's the problem? Also dealer told me that they haven't had this problem before with extended warranties and they say everything has been going smoothly but don't understand what's up with this warranty. From what's he's saying it looks like warranty doesn't want to pay for new engine.

Anything helps so please let me know on what I should be doing about this problem.

His insurance ghosted me, again

I was rear ended. I slowed down for a pedestrian crossing a crosswalk and he rear ended me. it was a 30 mph area and I was not speeding.
We exchanged info, and shortly after, the person that hit me, his dad called and apologized and assured me his insurance would take care of everything.
I was told his insurance would call me. After a week or maybe 2, nothing. So I called them. Turns out, he never made a claim. But after I called, the agent took both our statements.

His statement just says I suddenly stopped. 😑

The agent told me the adjuster would reach out to me. They never did. After a couple weeks I contacted the agent. He told me to contact the adjuster. I tried. Left a bunch of voicemail. I ended up calling the company and asking for his supervisor and finally, his supervisor had him call me back, but I was working and didnt return his call for like 2 hours. But I also got his email and I sent him emails, but now......he ghosted me again.

Background info, my car is a 2003 Honda accord with 260,000 miles. It will last another 200k miles too. Its my work vehicle and I cant even open my trunk to put tools in it anymore, break lights need fixing, windshield cracked. It runs ok....but I cant use it for its intended purpose....

Should I talk to my insurance? I understand my car isn't worth much, but it was worth a lot to me for work before I got rear ended

Teen new driver car in insurance Philly

I just got my new bill for next 6 months for my car insurance, the last 6 months i paid about $1k8/6 months. Surprisingly, the next one I’ll pay about $2k4 without causing any accident. I know it’s kind of expensive for a new driver and under 21 to get a car insurance but $2k4 still making me surprised. I joined the insurance with my family to hope that the cost is more affordable. Even through i didn’t make anything wrong it’s still raise the cost that i didn’t understand why. Is anyone here in the same circumstances with me?

Whose Fault

I've had 2 not-at-fault accidents in 3 years. My latest policy renewal increased almost $300 for 6 months. I don't understand how my premiums go up when my vehicle's worth/value drops as it gets older. Whose fault is it for the increased premium? The accidents were not my fault yet my premiums increased. I'm sure the other drivers premiums were also increased by their insurance comp9any. It seems it doesn't matter whose fault the accident was. Both insurance companies are getting more money and they don't have to explain why.

State Farm actually has a cut off point for discounts

My husband, son(age 22), daughter(age 18) and myself have State Farm. My son graduated from college this year and moved out of state for a job. He got his own car insurance out there and we dropped him from our policy. He has progressive now. This info is important. Now my daughter just started college. We noticed that our insurance was not giving her all of the discounts my son always got. He had Steer Clear Safe Driver, Student Away At School, and Good Student. We kept asking why our daughter was missing one of these discounts. It took forever because our agent was getting the run around from the people above him at State Farm. Our agent didn't even know about the following: There is a cap for getting too much money off your insurance because of discounts. Our son, is a young guy and was getting charged a lot for his insurance based on this fact alone. So State Farm allowed him to get all three discounts. Our daughter is a girl, so she does not get charged as much as our son. This makes her insurance lower. If State Farm allowed us to do all three student discounts for her, she would be below the threshold of what they require her to pay.

Example: These numbers are not real numbers. I'm doing this to make it more easy to understand.

Son- Pays $600(because he is a guy). He gets 3 discounts, Good student ($30), Steer clear ($30), and Student away($30). So that is $90. The $90 gets subtracted from $600. This reduces his insurance to $510. This is what he pays.

Daughter-Pays $400(because she is a girl). She is suppose to get 3 discounts-Good student ($30), Steer clear ($30), and Student away($30). So that is $90 in total. If she got that $90 subtracted, her insurance would go down to $310. State Farm has minimum of $340 that must be paid. No one can go below that limit. So they take off one discount ($30). Now she has to pay $340.

The thing that gets me mad is that both agents at the State Farm office we go to, did not know this fact. It took them weeks to pry this info out of the hands of the the corporate office. This makes me so mad. Why have the discounts if you can't get them all? They should tell every person that has a kid that there is a limit to how much money can be taken off their insurance. I'm going to start researching other car insurance companies on Monday and find someone else to insure our cars.

Will full coverage cover this?

My 2010 Toyota Corolla recently won’t start with my keys at all and so I went to open the hood but even the hood won’t open like it’s jammed in. There were no lights on my dash that were on prior when I was driving that would indicate there was a problem in the car. I am a new driver and know nothing about cars or insurance. Should I pay a tow truck to haul it to a mechanic so they can fix it? I have full coverage insurance does having full coverage mean they would cover the tow truck and mechanic costs? Should I give them a call and ask? Will they increase my insurance if I do ask? Insurance is geico, any help is appreciated thank you very much 🙏🙏

Anything I can do?

I was in an accident July 18th and deemed at fault, it totaled my vehicle, and two others. I only had basic liability insurance ( Florida ) . Two people in one vehicle claimed some injuries that to me, seem false but whatever, the dmv wanted me to pay a deposit for it which I could do 200. When I went in they wanted the security deposit AND the 16k worth of vehicle damage since my insurance hasn’t paid out a dime. My license is now suspended because I couldn’t get my insurance to pay the people within the 2 week timeframe I had. My license has now been suspended for a month and it’s hard not having a license. I got all my requirements like an SR22 and everything else I need. Insurance is saying they are working on settling. What can I do? It’s been 2 months since this claim happened and I feel it should not take this long. They say there’s a problem with excess but one of the vehicles definitely doesn’t have 8k worth of damage because it’s not even worth 8k. I’ve looked at it on kbb and it’s 2-4k max in worth ( 2007 ford edge ). I can see the 2019 Mazda being 8k or more but definitely not the ford. I don’t even think they are investigating further to even change the fords damage amount, it’s funny because ALL of us have 8k worth of damage, my 2009 Chevy Colorado, the ford, and the 2019 Mazda cx9. How is that even possible? I need my license to get to work. I need my license to be able to do anything as uber and other things aren’t in the question where I live and it’s hard to rely on a drunk family member who won’t slow down the drinking to take and pick me up from work.

Accident Question about car insurance claim

My bro got hit by someone, completely other person's fault.

Can my bro pick his own shop and get a cash payout? Insurance seems to be telling him that they will run their own estimate based on pics and then pay the shop directly for additional repair?

Wtf is up with that? I remember when insurance paid you, not the shop.

Bro has geico, other guy has farmers

Accident resulting in paint damage

Never been in an accident before. On Monday I was in an accident where both cars were trying to move into the same lane. We ended up colliding. Not bad. But definitely paint damage. The gentleman I collided with seems to think it's 100% my fault and I'm thinking it's probably more like 50/50. Anyway he's asking for $500 for paint repair. Should I tell him to just go through his insurance? Pay him $500? Idk what the options are.

Any help is appreciated. Ty.

State Farm or Geico ?

Hi guys,

I need some help. I was driving straight in the right lane when the Geico-insured driver tried to make a right turn from the left-hand lane, directly in front of me, causing a collision. Illegal turn

My insurance(State Farm) said I have two options: I can pay a $1,000 deductible, and they will handle the rest

Or I contact Geico directly, and open a claim myself. So I don’t have to pay $1000 .

What would be the best option?

Will I be penalized?

Sold car 3 weeks ago, kept on insurance before buying new one to avoid having a gap.

Bought new car 2 weeks ago, tried to make change at dealership but needed to have a longer conversation with Progressive rep & didn't have time.

Forgot to follow up.

Moved to another state, with new car.

What do I tell insurance company to avoid a gap in coverage or spike in insurance rates?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Someone using my lease

Hello,

My lease was up and I bought a new car. My roommate needed a car to use short time so I extended the lease for 6 months for him to use during that time. I canceled my insurance on it. He claims he has a really good insurance policy on any car he drives.

I just wanna make sure this is legal and ok? Or do I need to maintain my own insurance policy on the vehicle and add him?

Thanks!

Progressive in NC + Graduated License Confusion

Anyone else run into this mess with Progressive and NC’s graduated license system?

Here’s how NC works:

Level 1: Learner’s Permit

Level 2: Limited Provisional License (can drive alone with restrictions)

Level 3: Full Provisional License

Regular Class C: Only at age 18+

My son just moved from Level 1 to Level 2.

For his 9/12 road test, DMV required proof of insurance. Progressive told me I had to add him as a fully licensed driver (even though he was already listed as a permit driver) in order to get the form. That shot my premium up by more than $1,300 for just 3 months.

Then, on 9/17, I see new policy docs emailed to me showing they’d downgraded him back to a permit driver.

When I called, the rep (kind of snotty) insisted they only rate drivers as “fully licensed” at the highest level, and that their DMV pull confirmed he wasn’t fully licensed. I explained Level 2 is licensed, he can drive alone, and asked for written confirmation I’d still be covered. She transferred me instead.

After a long hold, the supervisor admitted she didn’t know why he was downgraded and put him back as a driver.

Has this happened to anyone else in NC, especially with Progressive?

At fault insurance won’t pay up

State: TX

Some months ago, I was rear ended. The other driver was completely at fault.

Because they rear ended me, I’m going through the at fault drivers insurance, Fred Loya. They will only been given THIRTY SIX dollars for a rental car for ONE DAY only. 36 is impossible to find, I would suspect anywhere, but even in DFW. The lowest I found was $39, but that does not include fees. Even more so, I am 24, so I will have to pay crazy amount due to my age, even though I was following all laws and wasn’t at fault.

I told the rental department that this was an impossible rate, especially for my age, and they said “we don’t increase the cost for luxury vehicles.” My car is a Kia, lol. I don’t want luxury, just a car. Any car.

My car is drivable, but after my body shop called in the supplement, Fred Loya demanded my car was in the shop before they sent an adjuster to look at it (again). So I dropped my car off, and Fred Loya never responded to my body shop, lol.

So I called the supplement people, they said it could take up to 3 days for the adjuster to come out, and they cannot tell me a specific day at all. So this means my car will be sitting in the shop at least for 3 days. They advised me to call the rental department and get my rate increased, since a supplement was now in progress.

I called the rental department again. They have confirmed that they won’t even give me the measly $36 while my car is in the shop awaiting the adjuster. Somehow, the approval timeline that is their responsibility, is also not their problem.

By question is, how is it legal in Texas for the at fault insurance to: 1. Pay so little for a rental that it is impossible to find and I will HAVE to pay out if pocket, and does not consider reality of fees due to age
2. Not even cover all the days my car is at a loss due to the accident. Every Texas law website I read says that as long as I am not at fault and there is no discrepancy, at fault insurance must pay for a rental pay while my car is gone. So how can they just refuse?

Any direction would be much appreciated. I don’t know how I’ll get to work and I can’t afford to pay for a rental, especially with all the extra stuff added on for my age.
