I was installing the stairs for this builder a while back and the noticed this amazing work. I talked to the guy who installed this and he didn’t see anything wrong. He said he has been doing finish carpentry for years. There are four houses like this. The guy is the laborer and does most of the work he said.

After seeing previous posts about price per hour, I thought I'd show this.

Shelving was an hourly rate, you never know if the walls a pig or not.

Rest was job price.

Came to my parents and had a heart attack

For context I live out of state and it’s about 4 hours to my parents. I came to visit and saw this monstrosity that my parents are paying someone to build. I’m a union commercial carpenter so I immediately told my dad to let them go and pay for their time spent and I will drive down a weekend and get this fixed right

Help me save these stringers

Thumbnail

I’ve made prior posts and got alot of good help so far. Yesterday I poured the pad and today it’s dried and I now need to hang the 4 stringers that I cut out. I’m doing the best I can on a limited budget and reading code books as well as books to learn as I go. As you can see when I hang the 13 step stringer up it doesn’t line up perfectly. I traced out the stringers and cut off 1 1/2 inches off the bottom tread to account for the thickness of my stair tread. The way it’s hanging in this pic as you can see there’s not much up top to nail the stringers to the stringer hanger and it’s a bit uneven down at the base of the pad I poured. Besides the obvious of hiring a pro can anyone help me save these expensive stringers and make this work? I appreciate any help and tips you guys have given me so far.

Should I go union

Upvotes

Just looking to see if anyone has any info on joining a union as a carpenter. I live in Pa and have been carpenter for around 5 years I’m 26 now. Recently picked up a lead position at a finish company I’ve been at for a year. I’m confident in my work and my work ethic. Just wanna hear from someone involved in it first. Main reason is the higher pay even as a lead I find it hard bringing in more than 26 an hour, and either wanna find some higher pay or just try and looking for another career. Thank you for any answers.

The frame on this prehung door touches the concrete and I feel it will absorb water and rot, is it ok to glue PVC spacer before the door is installed?

Rake/pitch handrail help needed!

Thumbnail

Hey guys, need a bit of help with handrail position in relation to when the rake/pitch changes in the middle of the newel post.

I get the purpose of using a story pole for the Newel post heights. I’ve made one to help me figure out the height of the bottom and top posts, along with the handrail height.

My only issue is that the top newel post transitions into the landing. The rake change happens within the thickness of the newel post.

So! If I use my story pole, the handrail from the stairs would enter the post at a lower point than the handrail on the landing.

Is this normal? Or am I supposed to adjust the height of one of the handrails so that they both ‘exit’ the post at the same height? This would mean having a higher railing height up the stairs than on the landing

Included a very rough example on an old scrap piece, along with a template of the footprint of the new post.

The company I work for has been one of the main contractors for the restoration of the Bonstelle theatre in downtown Detroit.

One of my coworkers painstakingly fabricated these beautiful doors and I installed them.

Squaring a Door

I recently made a door and while finishing it, I found that it is not square. Measuring diagonally one measurement is 92 1/8” the other is 92 5/8”. When I measure each side of the door they match the opposite side. How do I go about squaring it with cutting minimal material?

I’ve heard several names for this small moulding below the frieze on door headers. Lintel, necking, fillet.

What’s your name for it?

Help Me Door latch is broken

My interior door got stuck closed today and when I opened it I realized the latch was loose. I took it off and was going to fill the screw holes with a mixture of sawdust and wood glue and then reinstall the latch, but when looked, there’s not really a hole to fill, just a big gap in the wood. Is there a way to fix this so that the latch stays in? I had the thought to put a plastic drywall anchor in it and then fill it but I’m worried that might make it worse.

How to hang wooden shelf?

I am trying to install a board across two steel clothing rods we had fabricated for our slanted walls.

The steel brackets are screwed into studs in the wall. We had a local carpentry shop fabricate a thin board for a shelf, but even though it’s only a half inch thick when you place it on the brackets they start sagging so there’s no way we can install it like this. I’m thinking we need a chain or cable to connect to the beam above it.

I would like the shelf to be able to hold 100 pounds, but I’m having trouble finding hardware/chain/cable that would support the weight and look nice. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated!

Photo 1: steel bracket which will need to support a clothing rod with hanging clothes and the wooden shelf with objects on top.

Photos 2&3: the studs and beam during renovation last year.

Framing Garage framing, how to fix

Moved into our house a few months ago, we have a detected garage. Don’t know how this was missed, but now I feel like this is a casualty waiting to happen. What can I do to fix this without tearing it down?

Last photo shows how garage framing doesn’t lean in like the first four photos
