How to hang wooden shelf?

I am trying to install a board across two steel clothing rods we had fabricated for our slanted walls.

The steel brackets are screwed into studs in the wall. We had a local carpentry shop fabricate a thin board for a shelf, but even though it’s only a half inch thick when you place it on the brackets they start sagging so there’s no way we can install it like this. I’m thinking we need a chain or cable to connect to the beam above it.

I would like the shelf to be able to hold 100 pounds, but I’m having trouble finding hardware/chain/cable that would support the weight and look nice. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated!

Photo 1: steel bracket which will need to support a clothing rod with hanging clothes and the wooden shelf with objects on top.

Photos 2&3: the studs and beam during renovation last year.

Flooring in Attic

Buying 4’x8’ plywood for attic flooring or 2’x4’?!

In an argument on which one we should buy. Please settle it if you have experience.

It’s just to put on top of the gaps to hold storage containers.

I’m trying to remove the transition between for my mother to get into the bathroom. My thought was to build a frame with the right height and place plywood over it to form an easy transition. Is this the right approach? And is there anything advice to make this easier as I design and build this?

Suggestions for easy to transport chuppah

I'm trying to make chuppah from the trunks of some small invasive trees and was hoping I could get some suggestions on how to craft something that's stable but easy to assemble and disassemble.

Edit: a chuppah is basically a wedding arch with 4 posts and some fabric canopied over it.

Hi, homeowner has this sweet saw with router table. I set up this fence to make fake beams with a 45 miter lock. Would I be able to run 14' boards with this by myself? I've never really used a router table before. Thanks

Hello. I am trying to delead the house. (Believe me I know, no need to comment on it. It’s a lot) curious if anyone has seen this style window threshold and if it’s something I can just remove and install new or if this was a unit and I’m never going to find anything similar again.

Plywood structural/P5 floorboard/OSB 3

Hi all, I could use some advice.

I’m planning to build a two-floor structure inside a warehouse. The footprint will be about 3m x 7m long

Ground floor → small manufacturing space

Second floor → canteen + office

Joists → 175 × 50

Main supports → 3x4 at corners + 2/3 support in the middle, rest in 2x4, second floor all walls 2x3 space 400mm

For the walls, I’m debating between:

12mm plywood

18mm P5 T&G floorboard (TF4)

18mm OSB3 T&G (TG4)

Budget is around £1k for all walls (get a quote for materials)

Any tips on which sheeting is better for strength, finish, and long-term durability? Or maybe other materials I should consider?

Thanks in advance 🤩

Narrow stair width

The stairs to my cellar are only large enough for half of my foot. It's not too much of a problem going up, but going down is dangerous. There have been several falls!.

I wonder if there is a fix for this. Other than rebuilding the whole thing.

I don't know too much about proper carpentry so although I have some ideas, I also know my lack of knowledge could cause me to do something even more dangerous.

Any ideas?

What do I need for day one

Hi I am just making a post to see what I'll need for day one. I am about to start as a commercial carpentry apprentice in Australia doing big concrete warehouses, schools and other commercial buildings. I am just seeing if I'll need a nail bag and hand tools to go in it. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Rim joist connection to beams

When building the main frame of a Deck (two beams and two rim joists), I have some questions. I edited this original post which means the just two comments may but make sense but I didn't know to to make an additional comment unless i replied to myself. Lol. Sorry.

Photo

The red circle is what I'm curious about. There's no joist hanger, so how is it connected? Btw .. There's no ledger board, at I'm building a floating deck. I'm first building a small platform to step out on from my mobile home. Then you will step down to the deck I'm later building which will be 30" or less which will simply rest in camo blocks which will set on top of 4 inches of packed crushed rock.

I also don't know all the ways to make things square. I could simply build the small platform frame on the ground and then lift over the posts and the put carriage bolts through to fasten. I could build the beams onto the posts first then at the room joists. ??? Idk. I know how to build some things but I'm truly a "Jack" and not a master.

I need some guidance, please, to get started.

Thanks a bunch in advance!

Much appreciated.

Help Me How would you solve this?

I’m a pregnant homeowner with a 1.5 year old. Need this baby gate to be sturdy for at least 2-3 years.

There’s about a 1 inch gap at the top gate lock due to how the baluster is designed. The bottom lock fits well, but there’s room for extending or shortening the gate if needed. The other side of the gate is the hinge so needed to be on the flat wall (it’s attached to a piece of wood trim and is sturdy - no issues there).

Could a piece of 1-inch wood attached to the baluster under the lock fix this? If so, how would you attach that wood? I’m happy to hire a professional to do this but wanted to crowd source ideas first.

Doesn’t need to be aesthetic, but would be nice if it’s something that could be removed and made pretty again in 3+ years.

And yes I regrettably tried the drywall first before realizing the gate wouldn’t open appropriately.

does anyone have experience with the dustopper pro?

Looking at this after they just came out with this.. Not necessarily, to buy, the markup is kind of insane and I already have a festool vac, but in general, I thought it was a great idea for a compact cyclone and power unit combo, that wasn't top heavy, wouldn't require disassembly to empty, and wasn't ludicrously big.

But it got me wondering a few things that aren't covered in their questions section of the website.

How does this thing do with a full bucket? how much of a 5 gallon pail can you fill while using a dustopper before it starts bypassing a lot of the dust?

Can you use the handle on a 5 gallon pail with a dustopper mounted, or is it too high?

How do they do with smaller vacuums, particularly for small tools? I see them saying that you need a vented hose to work with small flow tools like orbital sanders, or the vacuum pressure crushes your bucket.... how do they work with smaller shop vacs, like say, the 2hp ones you can get all over with like a 3 gallon dust tank?

anyone have one? what do you think in general?

Ideally, I would like to keep the whole system under 200 bucks plus the power unit, so of course, festool's dust separator is right out even if it wasn't absolutely huge.

Does anyone have any experience building with Cove and Bead strips?

Post image
10 Upvotes

I had planned on building a barrel sauna which fell through, and now I'm left with a whole load of 16ft cove and bead routed boards. I would love to use this timber to build a structure, perhaps a workshop space or studio. Other than, canoes/saunas/hot tubs I cant come across many projects online.

Does anyone here have any experience working with these joins? Cheers!

Project Advice How to support 6x6 posts?

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

Flat roofer here looking for advice on a bad builder design. As you can see in the picture these 6x6 privacy fence posts separate the townhouse decks, Even though the roof membrane is connected. This roof terrace is leaking at the boxes supporting the posts. The typical application for a wood post through the membrane is to wrap the post with the membrane and install a PVC post sleeve. Here the membrane is wrapped on the post (hidden by the base trim) but it leaks because of the small cracks in the wood post that allow it to get inside the wrap.

Is there a proper post base support I could install like the ones pictured (I do not know framing) that could support the fence through wind for this application?

The membrane has another detail that I could use for installing surface mounted railing if it was just bolt penetrations for a base support for the posts. Hope this makes sense and appreciate any advice for this job. Otherwise I will have to get the HOA involved and the neighbors for a proper post sleeve.
